A VISIT to Scotland by the man in charge of one of America's most notorious prisons has been cancelled after police were called in by organisers over "threats" from protesters.
Burl Cain, who runs Louisiana State Penitentiary, had been invited to speak to members of the Winning Entrepreneurs business network in Edinburgh today. But organisers cancelled the dinner at Prestonfield House Hotel after a flood of protests from c
ampaigners.

On Friday, a series of penal reform campaigners, including Paddy Hill, one of the Birmingham Six, wrote to Belinda Roberts, managing director of the business network, to complain about the visit from the head of the jail that has been dubbed "Angola".

The trip was arranged after Edinburgh dentist Biju Krishnan visited the jail in April as part of a charity project.

The prison is renowned in the US for inmate violence and gang problems, but Mr Cain's leadership has seen a fall in violence.

Dr Krishnan had said it was "easy to see why people consider him as such an inspiration", adding that Mr Cain's achievements at the jail were "little short of miraculous".

But in a letter to Ms Roberts, Mr Hill and other campaigners – including John McManus, coordinator of Miscarriages of Justice Organisation Scotland, and John Watson, from Amnesty International – highlighted "cruel, inhuman and degrading" treatment at the prison.

"While Angola prison may now be less notorious, the prison can still be singled out for its cruelty and injustice, despite what your members may have witnessed during their limited recent visit," they said.

Ms Roberts yesterday told The Scotsman that it was two "threatening" calls made to her staff on Friday afternoon that led her to cancel today's dinner.

"There were two phone calls that came in which were basically threats. The message was, 'You had better look out'."

Ms Roberts said it was after speaking to a freelance journalist, who had also signed the letter, that she decided to cancel the dinner.

"She said she had put the word out at grassroots level. I was worried protesters were going to turn up at the dinner."

The prison has been notorious in recent years for its treatment of three black prisoners – Known as the Angola 3 – who endured more than three decades in solitary confinement.

Following widespread concern over their plight, one was freed and a second transferred to another jail. A third man, Albert Woodfox, a former Black Panther activist, remains locked up alone for 23 hours every day in a 6ft by 9ft cell, despite his conviction having been overturned last year by a federal court.

Ms Roberts said the main purpose of Mr Cain's visit to Scotland was for his wife to have dental work carried out at Dr Krishnan's upmarket private clinic in Leith. Mr Cain decided to cancel his trip to Scotland after Dr Krishnan told him the business network had cancelled the dinner.

Ms Roberts admitted she had "never heard of the Angola 3", adding that there were "two sides to every story". She said: "As far as I was concerned, he would have been a great person to speak – someone from outwith the corporate world."

It's a pity that a bunch of hobbledehoys should be able to get away with making threats like this. The police should investigate and bring charges. There's too much of this going on.

The same thing happened with the Edinburgh Interntional Film Festival when threats from extremists involved with the Palestine issue were able to stop the organisers from working with Israeli filmmakers - even though the extremists were out on bail awaiting trial.

It seems to be all too easy for a couple of extremists to deny the rest of us the right to hear people speak. The authorities ought to do something about it.

It's not dubbed "Angola", that's the official name of the prison.Gil Scott-Heron wrote a song called Angola,Lousiana in 1978.Aptly enough, it's built on a former slave plantation.

Criminals must be made to fear going to jail. Jails today have too many comforts, and for many criminals a stretch in jail is like a walk in the park. Put criminals behind bars and give them plenty of hard graft.

"Criminals must be made to fear going to jail."

Unfortunately the scientific evidence suggests that criminals are deterred by the likelihood of getting caught, not by how draconian the punishment is.

What most fail to realize that advocate tougher prisons is that tougher prisons create tougher inmates who will eventually be released on the the streets.

Most of the so called "soft touches" in the Prison System are actually there at the behest of Prison Officers, who unlike the arm chair critics actually have to work there.

If you goal is to lower the rates of recidivism then the so called "Soft Touch" Jails work better.

The Statistics for first time offenders ending up in prison within the first five years of their release are:

US 60%
UK 50%
Finland 35%

Studies have also found that the level of overcrowding also increases recidivism with the overcrowded California penal system having 70% of offenders back in Jail within the first 3 years.

Who was the "freelance journalist?" What did she say? What does she think about being held responsible for the threats to workers? Who are all the people who signed the letter?

Was the reporter not missing out on doing his job in not finding this out and reporting it? I occasionally have dealings with freelance journalists and I certainly want to know which ones I should be worried about.

8:- Spot on .... The PC brigade won't even let him speak and give his side of the story. They don't need silly things like the facts to come to a conclusion !!!

Scotland is fast developing as the militant arm of Britain's special brand of PC fascism and it is time the silent majority dealt with these noisy pip squeaks and release the country from their idiocy.

It's all becoming clearer. This was no "freelance journalist" but just some wee toerag connected to Indymedia, a joke website for middle class malcontent students not talking to their mammy and playing at being at anarchists. They all become management consultants in the end.

Meantime read about it here - http://www.indymediascotland.org/node/15810

Notice how the deluded "freelance journalist" doesn't mention threats but rather is under the impression that he or she convinced Ms Roberts of the rightness of his or her view.

I suspect that Ms Roberts is a pure wimp who got scared sh1tless at the prospect of her nice dinner being spoiled by two anarchists plus a dog on a string holding up tatty placards made out of cardboard.

Quite pathetic.

This is not true . This is just there PR speaking. There were no threats. A few calls made to express our anger at this man coming to speak. Louisianna State Prison is a former slave plantation. Angola Farm, named after where the best slaves came from. Still run like one. Aveage sentence is 88 years. 80% black inmates. For every one person who goes in , only one come out alive and they work up to 14 hours a day picking and sowing the land. They have had the Angola 3 and Kenny Zulu Whitmore held in solitary confinement for over 30 years on trumped up charges. Check out there cases before you jump to conclusions and never ever believe what you read in the press.

In August 2008 I spent two and a half days as a guest of Warden Cain on the campus of Angola Prison. The purpose for my visit was to see first hand the transformation that had taken place at what used to be regarded as the worst prison in America. I and my colleagues were allowed to mingle directly with the prisoners, attend a church service organized and led by prisoners, and even visit Death Row and visit with one of the prisoners there. I will admit to being a little nervous about stepping into a room filled with convicted murderers & rapists, and I can assure you that security is tight at Angola (it is a maximum security prison afterall). But the inmates generally hold the Warden and his policies in very high regard becuase he treats them like human beings provided they act like "good citizens" and not a "predators", who prey upon their fellow inmates and reject all authority in their lives. Yes, there are those in Angola who have decided to remain as predators. The predators are isolated and treated accordingly, but the choice was theirs. The transformation of Angola Prison is nothing short of a miracle. This is a case where the results speak for themselves...I have seen this first hand and am not simply jumping to conclusions based on PR or press reports. I challenge those detractors (like "pigtits") to do the same.
