A WOMAN who defrauded almost £70,000 in benefits by claiming she had 14 children was jailed yesterday.
Catherine Semple, 36, of Lennoxtown, East Dunbartonshire, created make- believe children and lied to officials that her sister had died and she was looking after her nieces and nephews.

She also made up false disabilities for some of the childre
n to get even more money from HM Revenue and Customs over a 3½-year period. Semple was caught after officials grew suspicious about the number of children she was claiming to be caring for.

Sentencing her at Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday, Sheriff Joseph Platt said: "This was a fraud on public funds on a very large scale.

"Matters like this come before the courts regularly, but I can't recall one as devious or cynical as this.

"This was a systematic fraud and one which was carried out over 3½ years, and as such I see no alternative to a custodial sentence."

At an earlier hearing, Semple admitted defrauding £69,150 from HM Revenue and Customs between October 2002 and April 2006.

Semple, who has two children, claimed for four extra children of her own, five foster children and five of her sister's children, none of whom existed.

Sheriff Platt jailed her for 18 months.

"£70,000" for a 18month stint in Prison, sounds good economics to me!

Customs people "only became suspicious....." after 3.5 YEARS?
I'd say someone in HM customs was getting a back-hander!

Typical civil servant efficiency.

That's about the same sentence you'd get nowadays for almost kicking someone to death. Then again, money is more important than people, going by the way the law is implemented.

Incidentally, how many civil servants have been given the boot for incompetence?

6# I agree with your sentiments Number 6, Unfortunatly the blame is with Brown. He introduced this nightmare system of tax credits. The family credit system before it wasn't perfect and needed altering but not like what he did. If somebody is on a low income and is entitled to tax credits then do this through the PAYE system. That way it reduces the risk of fraud and makes the workshy claim by a different means. i.e Social security. But no Brown just had to trap everybody into the nanny state knows best system and this is the outcome.

This and the woman who bit another woman's finger off in another story today.

We have such classy women in our society.

Why did not Social Services take the time to check this woman's story out while the 3.5 years were going by?? This comes to mind. Having 14 children would be enough to raise some red flags somewhere it would seem to me. Not enough jail time, also, for such a flagrant waste of government money.
