AS MANY as 1,500 people are coming to work in Britain every day - but 1,000, half of them British citizens, leave the country, official figures have shown.
The British population rose by 500 people a day in 2005 as the number of immigrants outnumbered the total leaving.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the net migration total for last year was 185,000, down from 223,000 in 2004
.

Just 91,000 Britons chose to come home, while top destinations for those leaving were Australia, Spain and France.

However, the composition of the working-age population in Scotland is anything but exotic.

Just 5 per cent of Scotland's 16-64-year-olds were born abroad, compared with 35 per cent in London, according to separate figures released yesterday by the national statistician.

While ministers have been keen to impose limits on new EU entrants Bulgaria and Romania, the ONS figures showed the biggest number of immigrants came from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, a net gain of 97,000 in 2005.

Poland contributed the most emigrants to the UK, with India a close second.

Six out of ten migrants from the new EU countries come with a definite job, or for business, compared with just 25 per cent for all other migrants.

The figures also showed the lowest number of asylum seekers coming to the UK since 1991, down to 11,000 from 80,000 five years previously.

Liam Byrne, the immigration minister at Westminster, said workers from the new accession states gave the British economy a £4 billion boost. "Many of these migrants come to take posts in important industries benefiting the UK," he said.

More than 23,000 work permit applications were granted for people in health and medical services.

Ministers and economists agree that the boost in migrant numbers has helped to keep inflation down, while 80,000 jobs remain unfilled.

Danny Sriskandarajah, the director of the Institute for Public Policy Research think-tank, said the migration gain was neither surprising nor worrying.

"We have a healthy economy that attracts workers from all over the world, a world-class education system that attracts international students, and the UK has been welcoming hard-working young eastern Europeans," he said.

"The challenge for policy-makers will be to make the most of increased mobility, not pander to reactionary opinion by trying to curb flows."

But thepressure group Migrationwatch UK said the statistics were "dubious", and contrasted them with earlier Home Office data, which showed 205,000 new EU members registered to work in Britain last year.

THE FACTS ON IMMIGRATION

FACT: Britain has a net migration gain of 500 a day: 1,500 foreigners arrive to work for at least a year, while 1,000 people leave daily. The net immigration total was 185,000 in 2005.

FACT: Poland contributed the single biggest number of immigrants last year. About 12 per cent, or 49,000, came to the UK, three times more than in 2004. India was second, with 11 per cent.

FACT: "New Commonwealth" nationals - those from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh - accounted for two-thirds of net immigration. Last year, there was a net gain of 97,000 from those countries.

FACT: Previous Home Office data said 205,000 came here to work in 2005 from the eight east European states that joined the EU in 2004. ONS figures claim a net gain of 64,000 east Europeans.

FACT: Half the 380,000 people who left the UK last year were British citizens. The countries they chose to go to in order of popularity were Australia (a fifth went there), Spain and France.

FACT: Only 5 per cent of Scotland's working-age population was born abroad, compared with 35 per cent in London. In 1999, the figures were 3.6 per cent in Scotland and 25.8 per cent in London.

I wonder -does the British Immigration service/ruling use the sysyem commoon in New Zealand ,Canada and Austrailia , in where each individual coming should fill in forms and score a certain number of points to be evaluated as to there worth to the country they wish to enter .Or in U.K.is it a matter of-we are desperate and in a bad way .We need bodies to fill up the spaces that are being created by an exodus of [basicaly white christians ]leaving for greener pastures .Should we not then ,if this is the case, take only from the melting pot what we want and keep out the rest .

Thier must be somthing very attractive to the 97000 folk from India and Pakistan ,but somthing equally unattractive to 380,000 whities to leave this fiar isle .

I would think that the British Immigration ruling does not, and it serves you right. Apart from that, when you get independence how are you going to cope with five million displaced Scotspersons who want to come home. Well those guys who do not fit in will have to move south of the border. Those guys who feel that it is not a bad place without those other guys can move in again. Did you ever notice that life can get hell of a complicated.

Peter...The 5 million displaced scots will be more than welcome..there is enough room..
I would also remind all Scots..we are working with an immigration policy styled for the south of England..not for Scotland - until we have independence we will not be able to invite the displaced scots back..

Bupf...you obviously havent a clue of what is happening with Scotlands economy...
And you may also find...that our economy was screwed by the union...

certainly puts the haremscarem anti migrant bigots to bed. We need more migrants in Scotland, not less.

bupf...I have been an expat myself for the last 20 years..back now though....Scotland needs its people back to help the economy grow even further..
Scotland's economy grew at an annual rate of 1.8 per cent in 2005, in line with its long-term trend rate and equal to growth in the UK economy as a whole (see Chart 1.1). Growth in the final quarter of the year was robust at 0.6 per cent and this bodes well for 2006.

Just google Scotland economy and you'll get a better idea..

Is that because you want to make Scotland into a sewer like London? Why don't you just move to Birmingham if you want a multi-culti paradise?

IanW,

Bill #9 - I am currently working abroad (last 17 years). I earn more than 5 times what I could command back in Scotland.

Please tell me what incentive I would have to come back? The heavy industry in Sotland is all but gone. Too many jobs are in the support service area which are paid at the lower end of earnings. More and more of these jobs are being shipped to countries like India and China because they pay less.

Scotland is slowly but surely becoming a wasteland. It may take another 20 years or so but that is the future.

Once again I ask tell me what incentive I would have to come back?

Where exactly are all these migrants supposed to live?

Hello?

There's a HUGE housing shortage in many areas already.

Um, there is an article at the bottom of the UK page explaining that immigration levels are falling and emmigration levels are increasing. Don't know where it puts this article other than out there with finding alien life on Mars etc.

12

bill-alba,

fife.. 03/11/2006 10:55:31

If you are earning 5 times more that you could in scotland then you probably won't be back...The heavy industry all gone..is probably due to the "Union" and if independent..our parliament can decide what industry to back or not..so its all up to us...But remember most people leaving Scotland do so for financial gain (myself included) and the reason we have to move is because we don't have a choice..that still doesnt mean that expats shouldnt be welcomed back..

More for IAN...With devolution the Scots parliament has for the first time in 300 years been able to do something about industry...so I think you'll find that there is an improvement and with independence the next 20 years will be positive..not a wasteland...try looking at positive things and then you may change your mind and come back to spend your well earned cash.

Another day, another scare story about immigration, another government cock up on the subjest and theway they have handled it.

On the one hand we are getting all the s@@t from the London Central Government about too much immigration etc etc and they put caps on the workers rights of the new accession States in 2007. To back this up they leak a confidential cabinet memo to the Sun saying that thousands of prostiutes, gangsters, thieves, gypsies and shoplifters willl descend on the Uk in January 2007.

Put the barriers up - absolute c@@p !!

What they have done is opened the door legally to allow any of these potential criminals to come leaglly and do their worst but the have put the rrestrictions on those who do actuallywant to come here and work. Where is the joined up writing in this.

Whilst there are the front page scare stories about mass immigration to the uk at rate of 1500 per day, our own would be Prime Minister , Jack, is gald ragging it all over the USA begging peole to come, live and work in Scotland as we have a declining population.

My view is not that of the government or the populist press, let them come from Eastern Europe , government statistics are flawed anyway so why believe anything that they say r publish in thse figures, it is only to hide their own ineptitude with the first wave two years ago that they are trying now to get a handle on what is liabe to happen, they massage the figures up, leak this to the tabloids, get the publicity and scare stories they want and the " Little Englander " mentality kicks in and all of a sudden there is a crisis. C@@P !!

We are part of Europe, accept this, accept freedom of movement of labour, accept that people will come, contribute to our economy and society. Let us not look in from the outer fringes of Europe, we are part of it.

Nice story Gerri

Housing crisis ?

We have brought over almost 3000 Eastern europeans to work i te Uk and have a huge list of vacant properties notified to me by landlords desparate to get good tenants who pay the rent on tme and keep the house in decent order.

We always find initaial accommodation for them and knowing the Eastrn European it is not long before they have sourced their own local affordable accommodation.

I placed some internet adverts for some jobs in edinburgh yesterday afternoon and by now, 11.37 Uk time i have had 43 replies to them, all of them resident in edinburgh and 99% are Eastern european.

Bill #14 & #15 - You are probably right. I doubt if I will come back in the current climate. My wife and children are still currently in the UK, the 2 older having just left University and the third due to start hopefully in 2008.

None of the want to live in Scotland as they see no prospects. Each of them are looking for better paid work and opportunities abroad. The youngest intends to complete University and then move abroad immediately. My wife will move to join me as soon as the youngest goes off to University.

I may be misinformed about the state of the Scottish economy as I am abroad most of the time. However my family live there and do not want to stay.

Exodus of basically white christians, why is that then?

19

IanW,

Doreen #20 - In my case it is purely financial, i.e. to provide a better way of life for my family. Religion played absolutely no part in my decision making process.

I wonder why you would bring it in to the discussion as no mention of it was made in the report. Nor for that matter was skin colour mentioned.

Without doubt tens of thousands of British professional people ie doctors.nurses etc. etc are leaving the country. and are been replaced by semi-skilled who are now working in the NHS.EDUCATION ETC it's no wonder the country is in a sad mess. thanks to Blair and his Labour government.

23

Betsy,

03/11/2006 19:17:25

Just an observation which is not politically correct. Maybe there are so many people leaving 'because' of all those coming in whose culture does not meld with Britain's. In fact, Britain's culture is on its way out also.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't potential immigrants to the UK offered a chunk of money to set up in Scotland? I'm sure I read that somewhere. Hardly think that shows a lack of encouragement. I suspect Scotland has the same problem we have here in Finland, that a small country will have trouble attracting skilled immigrants when they could choose a neighbouring country with more job opportunities and a larger in-built ethnic community.
