JACK McConnell, the former first minister, has called for MSPs to be given a free vote on whether or not to bar Wendy Alexander from Holyrood.
Members of the Scottish Parliament will vote tomorrow on whether to ban her from Holyrood for one day for failing to promptly declare donations to her Labour leadership campaign.
Mr McConnell, whom Ms Alexander succeeded as Scottish Labour leader last year, said MSPs should be given a free vote. "There's a lot of talk about parties voting en bloc for or against the standards committee report, but I believe very strongly that every individual member should make up their own mind on issues like this," he said.
"It's very, very important that the standards committee and the standards system in the parliament remain free from party politics."
In June, the standards committee ruled Ms Alexander had broken the rules by failing to register donations to her campaign within the required 30 days. The ban was agreed by one vote: the SNP and Lib Dems voted in favour, while Labour and the Tories abstained.
Two days later, Ms Alexander resigned as Labour's leader at Holyrood.
