NEWLY-elected Labour leader Iain Gray today handed key shadow cabinet roles to his two defeated leadership rivals.
Cathy Jamieson was named as health spokeswoman which will see her shadow Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Meanwhile Andy Kerr takes over Mr Gray's former role as the party's finance spokesman.

Richard Baker, who ran Mr Gray's leadership campaign, becomes the party's justice spokesman, while another supporter, John Park, has been handed the economy and skills brief in the new front-bench team.

"I am delighted with the team I have put together and that they have all accepted the challenge," Mr Gray said.

"We will continue to hold the SNP administration to account for its failing in serving the Scottish people.

"Apart from their ill-thought out and widely criticised flagship policies on local income tax and a Scottish Futures Trust, which will have serious consequences for hard working Scottish families, they are a government that is failing the poorest and most vulnerable with cuts in local services across Scotland."

Johann Lamont, who was elected party deputy leader on Saturday, replaces Jackie Baillie as chief of staff.

Rhona Brankin and Sarah Boyack stay at education and environment respectively, while Pauline McNeill moves from the justice brief to Europe, external affairs and culture.

"I am especially pleased that Cathy Jamieson and Andy Kerr have chosen to serve in the shadow cabinet after the contribution they made to the leadership election campaign that helped Labour get back in touch with our party roots," Mr Gray added.

"As well as experience we welcome new faces that have distinguished themselves already in the Parliament such as John Park.

"John's profile in the skills and economy field shows Labour is putting the skills and regeneration of the Scottish workforce at the heart of our programme."

Mr Gray will chair his first shadow cabinet meeting at Holyrood later this afternoon.

Highlands and Islands MSP David Stewart becomes the party's chief whip, replacing Mr Baker, while Michael McMahon stays on as parliamentary business manager.

Margaret Curran, Labour's defeated candidate in the Glasgow East by-election, had already been appointed to start developing policy for the 2011 election.

Mr Gray was elected leader on Saturday after Wendy Alexander resigned in June after a row over donations to her own, unopposed, campaign for the top job a year ago.

The new Labour front-bench team came under fire from SNP chief whip Brian Adam.

"This is a Gray team not an A team for Labour," he said.

"While Iain Gray shuffles the deckchairs in Scotland the new Labour ship is sinking.

"With Andy Kerr, Cathy Jamieson, Margaret Curran, Rhona Brankin and Sarah Boyack still in Labour's team there is little sign of new blood, new policy or new ideas in the Labour Party.

"Iain Gray may claim to have ripped up Labour's manifesto but by keeping the remnants of Jack McConnell's administration with Kerr, Curran and Jamieson he has failed to move forward from Labour's poor performances of recent years."

This from the party that voted against cutting prescription charges, abolishing bridge tolls, cutting student endowments!!

Clowns every last one of them

There is a long way to go before the Labour Party restore credibility in Scotland enough to challenge the SNP. Labours cause will be made better of course because the SNP are as hopeless as the Labour Party and many voters who were prepared to give the NATS a try are wondering what the heck they have done. However the above moves are a wee step in the right ( or should it be left) direction. Come away the reds!.

As if by magic life started yesterday and the previous 8 years of Labour mis-management of the entire economy does not exist.

Aye right!

Nothing like blind dogma to lead you astray.
In case you hadn't noticed, which in your myopic condition is highly unlikely, the SNP are very popular, and have a great deal of support across Scotland.
Alex Salmond is a well respected politician on both sides of the border.
Independence, and a truly Scottish Labour Party will arrive before the SNP are ever challenged by anything on offer elsewhere.
Salmond for all his faults is the man, and Scotland is fortunate to have him.
No other Party has anything that comes close.
You are 'left' in the wilderness !.

#5 Unlike you, I see the whole of the moon although I agree with you on the poverty. If I am an enemy of the people its because I am a communist who reads and understands the lessons of history - which is guide to us that the Labour Party as in the past will recover and come back that is the only logical conclusion that any intelligent person can make. Any lack of understanding of this perspective is both wishful thinking and niave which makes you more dangerous than any enemy of the people.

Gray could appoint Ghandi, JF Kennedy, Mandela, Hawkins, Branson, Sugar, etc to his cabinet, who in Scotland really cares? Oh i forgot, people who are not educated enough to know when The Daily Record, Sun, Scotsman, etc are New Labour Press Officers?

No place for Wendy? Shady Minister for Vulnerable Two Year Olds perhaps?

"while Pauline McNeill moves from the justice brief to Europe, external affairs and culture."
Europe and external affairs? Seismic Shift envy?

They are seriously off their heads!

As you rightly point out they (Labour) cannot even hold power at Westminster with a Tory agenda! What possible chance have they got with their so called left wing agenda when they could not even take control of their own party.

International socialism has a pre requisite. You need to have the possibility of winning control. They cannot even win a coconut!

Sedov is his own worst enemy!
For Marxist read Groucho!
He lives in Labour Lala Land where the sun shines( bright red even at night),it never rains and there is total equality.ie everybody is starving!
The lessons of history! DONT MAKE ME LAUGH!
That lot have not learned to open their eyes yet!

The photo says it all relly. Press release?

Then you have Hamish waxing (not so) lyrically on (yet) another thread about how Gray's ultimate aim is to defeat Salmond.

What a wonderful paper -eh, no?

I would have thought that the raison d'etre of a new party leader was to organise the party into a credible force able to take over the government of Scotland for the good and benefit of Scotland.

The same old dreary faces. If you have a basket of bad eggs and and mix them about a bit, you still have a basket of bad eggs. Cathy Jamieson and Andy Kerr. What a joke.

#7 .Sedov, you and the rest of Liebour's supporters need to drag yourself into the 21st century. There is NO appetite for a "Peasants party" in Scotland. Invertred snobbery is no longer seen as something to be proud of.

That was Liebour's most damaging legacy and modern day Scots won't stand for it. The Labour Party you
envisage does not exist. The party is jammed packed full of talentless oppertunists and I see no way of ridding Liebour of them. They are there as there is no room for them in the tory party. Once the tories take control in Englandshire and Wales, there will be mass defections from Liebour to the conservatives, much to the disgust of what's left of Liebour's support.

The final nail in their coffin for decades to come.
Using history as proof Liebour will return to power in Scotland, is the last act of a desperate man .

Inspirational stuff.
Sarah Boyack has made such a splash so far, it's wonderful that she's been retained. The way she blends annonymity and the ability to induce sleep at 60 paces is a heady combination.
