YESTERDAY, I set out the second legislative programme of this government at Holyrood. It is a programme that sets out a clear, consistent and confident direction for Scotland. It is, of course, the programme of a minority government, so we remain dependent on the support of other parties across this chamber to secure progress.
This government has a single, overarching purpose: to increase sustainable growth. That purpose is supported by our strategic objectives: building a Scotland that is safer and stronger; greener; healthier; smarter; wealthier and fairer.

Thank you for printing the whole statement by the First Minister. The Herald is fulfilling its responsibility as a journal of record. It benefits voters and contributes to reasoned debate.

#1 I think you have the wrong paper! Or are you being ironic?

"There is no dispute that climate change is the one of the most serious threats we face."

This statement alone proves the man's a complete idiot who is prepared to undo the whole economy based on a myth. A reduction of CO2 emissions of 60-80% will negate any economic growth plans. A contraction of air and road travel and serious disruption to reliable delivery of energy. The country will be a basket case, the new Albania of Europe. We sorely need politicians who are educated to govern rather than egomaniacs who write promise cheques that the real economy can never deliver. ikf it wasn't for the fact that the bammy English seem determined to do the same, there would be a mass migration to get out at the english border.

#3 I was just about to say exactly the same, It really makes you wonder what planet wee Eck is on. He does not seem to realise that people are not particularly pro SNP, they have simply had enough of labour and he is there by default.

The SNP Scottish government ably led by Alex Salmond is a refreshing change and full of good ideas when compared to the dead hand of 50 years rule of Scotland by the Labour Party.

" . . building a Scotland that is safer and stronger; greener; healthier; smarter; wealthier and fairer."

I doubt anyone would not support these objectives.

Being in a minority government should mean there are no major blunders while the SNP demonstrate their competence and gain experience.

"A key tenet of driving Scotland's economy forward lies in harnessing our stock of natural capital. There is no dispute that climate change is the one of the most serious threats we face. Urgent action is needed to cut emissions which cause climate change. The Scottish Climate Change Bill will introduce a target to reduce emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 – and a statutory framework to support its delivery."

How does this square with an economy which will be based on selling oil?

"Alex Salmond: My plans for a safer, stronger, greener, wealthier Scotland"

Obviously something HM Opposition must oppose.

#3 Unimpressed one 'based on a myth.'

Human induced climate change is not a myth. There has been a well funded campaign of disinformation from vested interests in the USA in particular the Exxon Mobile Corporation who funded a range of bogus 'scientific institutes' which they manned with ex tobacco lobbyists to spread this disinformation. Genuine climate scientists such as Prof. Peter T. Doran were deliberately misrepresented in terrifyingly poor senate reports. To claim the word of ex-tobacco lobbyists such as Fred Singer who refuse to have their 'work' peer reviewed is ridiculous. The entire scientific community now accepts the case based on the work of many thousands of scientists across the globe.
Ite issue is whether to combat climate change or accept as I do that it is now inevitable and deal with the impending consequences. Pretending it is not happening would be highly irresponsible.

Here is a sample of the scientific bodies that support human induced climate change.

Academia Brasiliera de Ciências (Bazil)
Royal Society of Canada
Chinese Academy of Sciences
Academié des Sciences (France)
Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina (Germany)

#9, I could give you a list of well respected scientific institutions and individuals that 'just knew' Einstein was wrong when he proposed his work. Scientific consensus is not science.

Einstein presented his work to be revived by his peers. A debate then ensued and because of the robustness of his theories data, and proofs, they ultimately became to be accepted.

If you think the climate deniers are to be compared to Einstein or any other genuine scientist, please reference the body of peer reviewed work that backs their case.
