QUOTING both Robert Burns and Gordon Brown, the SNP's newest MP, John Mason, made his maiden speech in the Commons on Monday evening. But in a sign of what may lie ahead, the by-election victor from Glasgow East injected an edge to proceedings by stretching the parliamentary convention that MPs' first speeches steer clear of overtly partisan comment.

Mr Lydall is dead right of course the UK parliament does have very little interest in Scotland which is exactly why Mr Mason is in a party which is dedicated to leaving it! As long as we are outvoted 11-1 the 'union' is not equal and John Mason has played a significant part in bringing it to an end with his party's stunning victory in Glasgow East.

He was a superb candidate and I'm sure he will be an exceptional MP for his constituents.

Mr Mason will have the assistance of his parliamentary colleagues in helping him settle in and he will hopefully have more help very shortly in the shape of another ex-Council Leader from Glenrothes.

Given the activities that most Lib Dem MPs seem to engage in, I think he should recommend them to wash more than their hands....
