ONE of Scotland's largest public-sector unions has launched a pre-emptive attack on SNP plans to finance major building programmes.
Ahead of giving evidence today to Holyrood's finance committee, Unison has described Scottish Government proposals to create a Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) as "an expensive quango employing staff on six-figure salaries". The attack is based on the Scottish Government's own business plan which allocates £1 million for six or seven SFT staff.

But defending the SFT plan, a Scottish Government spokesman said: "It means we will get more for our money."

John Swinney, the finance secretary, will announce details tomorrow.

Let's face it Unison is just a branch of the Labour Party.

I have just checked the Certification Office for Trade Unions website to discover that the General Secretary of Unison received £ 137756 in salary and benefits last year. Is THAT not a six-figure salary?

Hypocrisy!

The man who represents the interests of some of the nation's highest-paid footballers has become the first trade unionist to break the £1m-a-year salary barrier.
Gordon Taylor, the chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association, saw his salary jump from £611,000 to £1.15m in one year
Peter Carter, the general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, who was recorded as receiving £123,588 for less than a full year.
Mick Brookes, the general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, who earns £118,000 a year, up from £106,000 the previous year;
Michael Leahy, the general secretary of Community, which represents steelworkers, knitwear workers and cobblers, who earns £113,000 a year;
Ian Partridge, the general secretary of the Lloyds TSB Group Union, who earns £108,000 a year, up from £85,524 the previous year.
According to the returns there have been big increases for other union leaders, but this was immediately refuted by the organisations, who claimed the returns to the Certification Office were wrong.

Good letter in to-days paper

Trade unions are going on strike for an additional 2.5 per cent wage increase, over the current Cosla offer, which, for a lower paid worker on £300 a week, will bring in an extra £7.50 a week.

Under the Scottish Government's LIT proposals, the same worker living in a band C house in Edinburgh would save £14.67 a week (a working couple bringing in £600 a week would save £8.60).

If Unison is really concerned about the lower paid, it would support the LIT as this would represent an annual above-inflation increase for the vast majority of its members without them losing pay through strike action.

How rich from a bunch of hypocrites!
Why didnt Unison speak out when the PFI/PPP contracts were being handed out by the prevois Labour/Libdem administration?
Could it be that Unison and Labour are in others back pockets?
After all Unison sponsor many Labour MP's, MSP and Councillors and have influence over Labour. The same goes the other way, when Labour want to make a point or create mischeif, they get Unison to do the dirty.
The above article is an example. When Labour were breifing this paper, they got the Scotsman to write 25 reasons against LIT. Unsurprisingly the 'Union' quoted was - Unison! Now we have another Labour breifing with a 'Union' attacking six figure salaries and that union is - yes its Unison again
If I were a Unison member I would start to question why Unison are quoted all the time in favour of Labour breifings. Unison represent many in the public sector, ironically Labour actually havent done anything for the public sector workers

By the way Dave Prentis, General Secretary of UNISON, does alright, he earned during period 2007/2008 was £ £89,502 plus £34,993 in benefits. I make that a total of £ 124,495.00, which is also a six figure salary

#10 Edward. Not sure where you got your figures but the Form AR21 (which trades union are required to submit annually) lodged with the Certification Officer on 5 June 2008 shows that Prentis received salary of £ 92187, and benefits of £10320 (NI), £23603 (Pension) and £ 11646 (Expenses & car) making the total of
£ 137756 which I quoted at #5.
However I TOTALLY agree with your view on the utter HYPOCRISY of these union leaders which is, of course, part and parcel of the modern Liebour Party. Just when will the MEMBERS ever see through it?

Lets not forget the £15 pounds and odd pence each month from every member, told that bunch of wasters that I would never join their bunch of pathetic pro unionist Labourite union. All we were doing was supporting staff on inflated salaries and their offices in London, Im afraid not chuck, direct link to the Nufatcat liebore party, sorry I dont want to be associated with tories in drag.

The real Labour party died when Blair took up the reigns and its gone way way down to the bottom of the barrel since then, I would vote for independence and getting shot of the whole of the English Westmonster noose around the neck of every Scot. If Westmonster moan so much that we Scots drain so much of their resources, why the h*ll wont they let this country be free, I will tell you why, its because it would expose the years of lying and cheeting and stealing and Unison have been there all along as the tool to keep the sheep in line, based on their members faith in the system, a system that stopped working right around 1980 odd when Thatcher destroyed them.

Champagne revolutionaries all. Like their political counterparts. My immediate thought on seeing the headline was union bosses have the same level of income. I suppose with salaries like that they need to stir things up now and again just to prove they're worth it. But not too much, because they don't want to upset El Gordo too much. In any event they continue, heads in sand to pay for the Labour Party who they allege are maintaining low levels of pay increase (2.2%). Is it just me or whit?

LEAL,

Unison is the Labour party and vice-versa.Both are anti-Scottish.If either had the interests of Scottish workers at heart,they would support independence,like an ever increasing number of their members.
14

Jwil,

Are Unison really representing the views of their members, or just those of the Labour party?
Unison members rise up against your leaders.

Jwil,

Alex Salmond and John Swinney have demonstrated that they will not be swayed in their determination to introduce the LIT and I am sure they will also take the views of Unison with a pinch of salt. Its great to have a strong government in Holyrood.
