Preferred site for new £100m Scottish prison revealed

THE site of a notorious prison for sex offenders was yesterday named as the preferred location for a new jail.
The Scottish Prison Service announced Peterhead as its chosen site for the new HM Prison Grampian.
It is expected to take at least four years to build at an estimated cost of £100 million.
The "community-facing" prison will be the first of its kind in Scotland, aimed at holding offenders from the local region while being part of a national network for young offenders, women, mainstream inmates and sex offenders. The SPS will now seek planning consent.
The jail's capacity will be around 500, combining the number of inmates at Aberdeen's Craiginches and Peterhead, which is currently used to house sex offenders.
Since it was earmarked for closure in 2000, an opposition campaign has been run by the partners of Peterhead prison officers, who were not allowed to speak out.
One, Lyn Shannon, said: "This is what we wanted, and although it's been frustrating it's been worth the wait."
