IN TODAY'S celebrity-obsessed culture, pop stars and models publish tell-all life stories when they're barely out of their teens. At 77, Sir Sean Connery has chosen to take his time.
More than five years after he floated the idea of an autobiography, the James Bond star's book, Being a Scot, is complete, The Scotsman has learned. It is due to be published in the autumn.

The book mixes a frank account of Connery's life with an esoteric take on Scotland's history and culture. Over 300 pages long, it draws on 400 photographs from his collection.

According to a publishing brief seen by The Scotsman, it ranges from his childhood in a gaslit Fountainbridge tenement to learning golf from Gert Frobe, his Goldfinger co-star, and weekending with Billy Connolly, "the funniest man alive".

The book's story is a saga in itself. In 2003, Sir Sean pulled out of an agreement with Meg Henderson, a Scottish writer, to pen his memoirs. Later, he cancelled a deal with Beatles biographer Hunter Davies and publisher HarperCollins.

Being a Scot, co-written by his old friend, the film-maker Murray Grigor, was due to be released by Scottish publisher Canongate. After months of working on early chapters, however, Connery and Grigor are said to have clashed with the publisher, Jamie Byng. The book is now to be published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson. "I'm very excited about this book," said publisher Alan Samson. "There's a book called England Made Me. This is really how Scotland made me.

"We can't pretend it's something it isn't. It is not a book of titillating revelations about the women in his life, nor will it be sold that way."

Mr Grigor said: "The book really reflects the life and film achievements of this extraordinary man. It reflects topics of Scottish culture, high and low."

Sir Sean recalls Fountainbridge as a grim industrial no-man's land with the "porridge-like and pungent" smell of Auld Reekie's "huddled chimneys". The family lived at the top of a tenement, opposite McCowan's toffee factory, with the communal toilet four floors down.

The book tells how he became an actor "by accident". Despite what many accounts say, he never won a bodybuilding prize. Instead, Connery was spotted in a contest and was told a show of South Pacific was casting for a chorus line. He was hired, got £14 a week – more than ever before – and "got a taste for it".

He also tells how he was taught golf for the scenes in Goldfinger. "I began to take lessons on a course near Pinewood and was hooked," he writes. "Soon it would take over my life. I began to see golf as a metaphor for living."

IN SEARCH OF SCOTLAND

SIR SEAN Connery and Murray Grigor look in the book for the roots of Scots' "psychotic humour", the "Gothic tendency in Scots writing" and the "Scottish cringe".

Sir Sean sings the praises of Scottish architecture and film, and the country's penchant for inventing great games. But he laments the fact that while Vienna's historic 19th-century ferris wheel was built entirely with parts from Glasgow's steel mills, the London Eye was built by European firms.

"What became of Scottish innovation?" he asks.

Bond's favourite shoe shop gains a toehold in Scotland

IT MAY soon be easier to follow in James Bond's footsteps, as the suave spy's shoemaker of choice opens its first branch in Scotland.

Church & Co, which was formed in 1873 and whose clients have included Winston Churchill, will be the latest big-name arrival on Edinburgh's George Street.

Church has stores across London and abroad: in Paris, Milan and New York.

Ian Fleming's famous superspy wore their Presley-style shoes in a number of novels, and the footwear has featured in a several Bond films.

The George Street store is set to open in time for this year's Edinburgh International Festival in August.

Stephen Etheridge, group chief executive, said: "Edinburgh is one of the UK's top retail locations. We are very excited about opening up there."

Leading Edinburgh retail expert Niall Macdonald, director of agents Jones Lang LaSalle, said: "Church's decision to come to George St would not have been hard. It's the ideal location for a retailer of their quality."

In another boost for George Street, The Scotsman has learned that the fashion chain Jack Wills has clinched a deal to move into the former Bonhams auction rooms on the thoroughfare.

Isn't Connery half-Irish?

That makes him 50% plastic paddy.

I think both of Billy Connellys parents were Irish catholic.

Many contributors to these boards have suggested that the Scotsman should not be writing drivel ( I refer to other articals). Here in this one we have #1 AM2 and #2 GC talking like they have verbal and body diarrhoea which is totally irrelevant to the topic in hand. They should have their registration to the Scotsman cancelled
Sean has my vote as does any Scot who is successful.

Boy Wonder,

You're so wrong Chuckles! Connery used his fee from Diamonds Are Forever (1971) to establish a charity to support deprived children in Edinburgh as well as Scottish film production.

Connolly also has charities he funds ... but like many celebs, doesn't publicise it!

Connery certainly doesn't deserve half the sh*t that gets thrown at him. If people stopped to listen to what he says ... they'll find a very warm and good-hearted man. Yes, he made errors in the past ... but as the song says ... "in the past they must remain"!

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!

#8&9 Charles Linskaill Why do you think it strange that Billy Connolly and Sean Connery choose to live elsewhere most of the time if the alternative is to live amongst a bunch of negative thinking, jealous, whining losers like you?

As #17 BW said, both of these guys contribute to their country and a lot more than I bet you do!!

007 ..Sean has never foul mouthed his country and people. Only the quislings. Rightly so.

Connelly could have and maybe is the original 2 Heided man that Matt McGinn waxed lyrical about ....
Matt would have been so dissapointed as Hamish Imlach who proved to be more Scot than British man Connelly

As Matt said to Connelly when advised to go down to London to make big money by the "the big yin."

A prefer ma ain folk..

Aye and Hamish was born in India..

Sean Connery has been a great ambassador for Scotland..

Certainly no one could call him a quisling.

I wonder if he'll mention his time spent as a builder after his milkman days. Remember the gold suit he had made for the premier of Goldfinger? I wonder if he'll remember the time Neil, his brother wore that gold suit to the buiding site? His friends back then called him Tam not Sean. He was just like any other Scot in his early days, working hard for his keep.

Good morning, madam.

I don't know why some Scots are so envious and bitter about the success of Sir Sean. He is admired around the world except for certain disgruntled Scots who truly demonstrate the "psychotic humour" mentioned in this newsitem.

Have we all gotten over yesterdays kerfuffle over Canadian bearskins? In light of the abuse I received I have adopted a new motto, courtesy of a Canadian friend:

I have never understood the popularity of Shir Shean. He is a passable actor of average talent but, I grant you, he has a fascinating vocal delivery.

However, the one thing about him that really irks me is the appalling dress sense he demonstrates when wearing the kilt, particularly when attending formal functions. I shall never forgive him those misdemeanours!

Delrazz,

Firstly, I think some of the comments on this article serve no relevance to it whatsoever, I mean the fact that S.C. has beaten up his first wife Dianna, ok he has made mistakes, haven't we all sometime in our lives made mistakes?? how do people who read the comments know that you who have written them have not done the same! I think S.C. has done alot for his country Scotland, what have you done to make a difference, I think is more to the question to comment or criticize, is pretty comical, Sir Sean Connery fought tooth and nail for Scotland's independence, yes of course he is a credit to the nation, like myself born and bread in Edinburgh and proud of it.

Secondly, the fact that B.C. is half Irish again is laughable, I take it the people commenting are BIGGOTS!!! so what if B.C. is half Irish, the fact that he is Half Scots as you put it has done things for his country that maybe you haven't, does that not make him, more creditable?? does it matter where someone is born or living, they have a belief and stand up and fight for that belief, we do have a strong passion for our country, but then again so many people are immgrating due to the running of the country, as it's not ours anymore, everyone is let through the floodgates, who no longer have a say, there's too many complaints about the stae of this country however too quick to help others, along with the biggotry, again is damaging for a nation trying to stay on its feet.

So personally, I think people should take a moment and think before coming out with non-relevant comments and slating people, that deserve nothing but a laugh at or drawing attention to themselves, cheap publicity!

Its true there is a lot of rubbish written about Connery, and most of it from jealous small minded Scots.
But read again - he fell out with Meg Henderson, then he fell out with Hunter Davis and Harper Collins. Then he fell out with Jamie Byng and Canongate. Is there a pattern there?
Is it Connery who is the narrow-minded argumentative chip-on-the-shoulder Scot?

I just can't believe what I am reading!
What a bunch of jealous, small minded, provincial prigs some of you
Scots are. Why do you always seek the dirt in everyone and ignore the big picture?
This book will be a best seller, but most of you won't even deign to read it, preferring to offer your personal opinions with nothing to back them up.
The Scots have so much to offer and Sean Connery has done more for Scotland than you have in your dreams.

Whilst I have never been a fan of Connery's personal and political views I still have the utmost respect for him. He has always supported his homeland, either in terms of promotion or charity and has always highlighted his pride in his country. Scotland actually matters very strongly to him. So like many Scots who have moved abroad I'm very proud of his achievements as a Scot. It has been said that Scotland's greatest asset was it's exports (we built the British Empire afterall!) and Sean Connery epitomises that. Those that moan, complain and accuse can't see the wood for the trees

British Americans, residents of the United States who trace their ancestry to Britain. Britain, also known as the United Kingdom, is composed of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. According to the 2000 U.S. census, as many as 41 million people in the United States are of British descent. The 28.3 million people who claim English ancestry constitute the largest subgroup of British Americans. Scots-Irish Americans, descendants of Protestants from what is now Northern Ireland, number 5.2 million. Approximately 5.4 million Americans claim Scottish ancestry, and 1.9 million report Welsh ancestry. About 12.4 million people, primarily in the Southeast, claimed American ancestry in the census. Experts believe that most people in this category are of British descent.
