Published Date: 13 June 2008
SIR Sean Connery will be returning to Edinburgh to unveil his long-awaited autobiography on his 78th birthday at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, it was announced yesterday.
Launching the festival programme, the director, Catherine Lockerbie, said with a record 800 authors participating, the world’s biggest book festival was also the most international. Authors from 45 countries are taking part, 200 of them Scots.

Among those she singled out are Salman Rushdie, John Prescott, Kate Adie and Jonathan Dimbleby, but the programme has a width that encompasses writers as diverse as Margaret Atwood and Francis Firebrace, an aboriginal elder from Australia’s Yorta Yorta tribe.

Although some of the bigger literary names are absent this year – Doris Lessing will again be missed – that extra width makes up for it. This is, after all, a festival at which you can find Tony Benn and the Duchess of Devonshire, Richard Dawkins and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Esther Rantzen and Tariq Ali, Gen Sir Mike Jackson and Irvine Welsh. You’ll find Rose Tremain, who last week won the Orange Prize – but also Chuck Palahniuk, whose novel about a porn marathon is guaranteed to shock.

Among those writers trailing freshly-written memoirs is a similarly diverse group. From Halima Bashir, a young doctor in Darfur who experienced appalling horrors before she escaped, to Rick Wakeman, ex-prog rock star and now Grumpy Old Man, almost all human life is here. Somewhere between those extremes are Carol Thatcher, Katherine Whitehorn, Bill Paterson, Blur’s ex-bassist Alex James, Libby Purves and veteran editor Diana Athill.

The festival opens on 9 August with a promised “surprise” guest, hinted to be “a major public figure”. All we can safely say is that it isn’t Alex Salmond (piquantly giving the Donald Dewar Memorial Lecture), Tony Blair’s former chief of staff Jonathan Powell, Senator John McCain’s foreign policy adviser Robert Kagan, David Owen, or Menzies Campbell – because they’re already on the programme.

Sean Connery’s long-awaited Being A Scot – co-written with his film-maker friend Murray Grigor – is far from the only new title being launched at this year’s festival. Janice Galloway’s childhood memoir This Is Not About Me is eagerly awaited, but so too is the latest by Richard Holloway, who will be chairing her event, and talking about Between the Monster and the Saint, a philosophical reflection on morality on an endangered earth, later on.

Although the festival is full of familiar literary names – last year’s Man Booker winner Anne Enright, Hanif Kureishi, Terry Pratchett, Tony Parsons and George Steiner among them – it is also full of ones which, though unfamiliar to Britons, are fêted abroad including the brilliant Chinese short story writer Yiyun Li, who is making her first visit to the festival.

Ms Lockerbie said: I am overjoyed that so many authors have accepted our invitation.”

If the best Bond of all is the star of the adult programme, Charlie Higson’s Young Bond is one of the highlights of the children’s event.

This year it is 25 years since the book festival began. On the evidence of the 2008 programme, it’s an anniversary it’s going to celebrate in style.

Love, death, history - and even some ‘slam poetry’

IT IS a quarter of a century since the book festival tents were erected for the first time.

As the trees in Charlotte Square Gardens have grown, so has the scale of this event, which has become an international draw for some of the world’s greatest and best-known artists.

Writers from more than 40 countries as well as nearly 200 from Scotland are expected.

Here David Robinson presents his personal selection of the ten best book festival events this year.

• Sean Connery, 25 August. Shay no more ... but will you get a ticket?

• Yiyun Li, 11 August. This superlative Chinese short-story writer is making her first visit to the festival.

• Julian Barnes, 10 August. A depressive subject – the fear of death – scintillatingly analysed.

• Janice Galloway, 23 August. Launching her childhood memoir.

• Jonathan Fenby, John Keay & John Man, 12 August. This year’s Reith lecturer leading a panel on Chinese history.

• Simon Sebag Montefiore, 13 August. Brilliant last year talking about Stalin, now back with his first novel.

• Margaret Atwood, 23 August. Canada’s greatest writer – and driest wit.

• Shane Koyczan, 22 August. Tried slam poetry yet? Start off with the world’s best.

• Jonathan Dimbleby, 13 August. Russia through the eyes of an effortless communicator.

• Tony Benn, below, 14 August. Whatever your politics, the man’s a national treasure.

Typical Scottish negativity in this forum. Here we have our only Scots Hollywood legend and because his politics is different the vultures are hovering.

Comments above sadly show how small minded so many Scots are - one genuine superstar and all they can do is carp & whinge about him. Maggie Thatcher was right about the whinging Scots. A bunch of sour-pussed wimps crying about a man who's given much much more to his country than anybody on this thread, both in terms of money and publicity. And as for the comment about what the Chinese supposedly think about Scots living in a time-warp, that's simply laughable when you consider the Chinese majority still live as peasants, ride rickshaws or their cycling equivalent, believe in a fat-bellied Buddha and eat with sticks and hands! And as for the public spitting??..modern & enlightened,,not!!!

11, & 12, So true, it's sad.

I always thought it was a pity about Sean that he was born Scottish, I mean if he was English and supported the Tories he wouldn’t get so much sh!t. How many people with British passports or “Brits” live aboard to escape tax, but still support the politically party of their choice?
How dare someone from Scotland, who does not live there, but wants the best for their country, have the gall to support the party that they feel is the best for their homeland??!!

Then again I have heard that Mr Connery DOES pay tax in the UK, AND he gives MILLIONS to charities in Scotland. But that’s in Scotland so I guess in your view, (you sad tw ats) that doesn’t count!

16

Mikko,

Drumnadrochit 13/06/2008 09:57:13
Oh yes, here he is again: The Self Proclaimed King Of Scotland living in tax exile. What a waste of oxygen he is. I predict sales of his book to be less than 2000.

Go away vain man. You do nothing for Scotland - not even pay taxes - we should turn our backs on you.

The negativity on here is so bad it's beginning to reek of bitter jealousy. If I had the money that Sir Sean had, damn right I would live abroad also. When you moan that he is evading tax then is he not evading the tax which will no doubt benefit England more than Scotland, Wales or N Ireland?

Good on you Sean, I hope that your book is a great success and I look forward to reading it myself.

The amount of charity he has contributed to Scotland is massive, the stick he is getting on here is rediculous in my opinion.
22

Mikko,

Drumnadrochit 13/06/2008 11:14:13
#21 Charity sharity. The Self Proclaimed King of Scotland is a joke. If he is serious about Scotland then he can come and live here and pay some taxes. But he couldn't care less for Scotland; he likes his warm weather, fast cars and easy living. He doesn't love Scotland enough to live here; he can go to hell.

TimW1234,

The usual suspects, the usual "Sir Sean bashing".

Some posters never develop beyond their bloody-minded prejudices and misconceptions. Get a life you people, get out more, and maybe you will be more accepting of the accomplishments of others. Jealousy and envy are not admirable traits.

As for the contention that Margaret Atwood is Canada's "greatest writer" that is a matter of great discussion and furious debate here.

She HAS been around a VERY long time, has entered the pantheon of the great and revered and aged, and I suppose we in Canada take her for granted but her wit is sometimes tortuous and her books a slog to tredge through.

But then that is our natural character - we are so self-deprecating and self-critical that we would complain, if given a bar of gold, that it was too heavy and "Thank you very much but no thanks".

Weird, aye?
24

john z,

I just cannot understand all these nasty, bitter small minded comments about Sean Connery. The man is a living legend, and has a great deal more credit to his life than the wasters posting such small minded garbage here.

Some people in Scotland don't need the English to put them down, they can do it all by themselves with great ease.

So far as I'm concerned, he has worked damm hard all his life, and is quite entitled to spend his later years in the sun - why not, what is so bad about that, you sad pathetic ignorant people.
25

Mikko,

Drumnadrochit 13/06/2008 11:32:30
#23 I have no worries or jealousy about the Self Proclaimed King of Scotland's wealth and success. If a throaty lisp and second rate acting can take you so far then good luck to you I say. Hoorah.

But, and there has to be a but: don't lecture to those of us that really live and work in Scotland everyday and try to make it a pleasant lovely place for ourselves to live and others to come and visit. And particulary, Mr Self Proclaimed King, Sir Sean, don't come and think you will be welcome when all you are is a PR seeking tax exile who loves to rub your chin on tartan and be seen as the "great Scot". You are great nothingness.
26

Alan Reid,

NZ 13/06/2008 11:38:20
John Z, very true.

Mikko, truly you are a small minded twa t!
27

Mikko,

Drumnadrochit 13/06/2008 11:44:07
#24 Oh tax exile: the sheer pain of it and the hurt. Sir Sean of the Round Table presumably thinks "I love Scotland so much that I just can't bear to face its climate or its taxes."

My soul weeps for the poor wee man; the Self Proclaimed King of Scotland. He must have sleepless nights about his love for our great country and how he just can't express it because the Inland Revenue might ask a few questions and take a bit of his cash.

My God, Rob Roy and Bonny Prince Charlie never faced such horrendous oppression did they? Good on King Sean Connery for standing up for Scotland by deliberately living abroad and avoiding paying his taxes; a hero for Scotland indeed.
28

TimW1234,

Your comments and rudeness just reinforce the perception of Scots as small-minded, argumentative, and insulting. Thank God the majority Scots are not like you and don't have your negativity and twa tness, you superfluous numptie.

Your prejudices and rudeness cannot be the normal thing in Scotland. My experiences with Scots are entirely different from yours and one hope that your pitiful stance is a minority one.

You bring discredit on Scotland and just make a fool of yourself by this intemperate attitude, you sorry, sorry fool.

29

Mikko,

Drumnadrochit 13/06/2008 11:56:13
#28 Personal insults again against the poster of an alternative view. Always the last vestige of the person like you who knows they have lost the argument.

So, to redeem your sad views, why not simply explain why the Self Proclaimed King of Scotland can't just give up his tax exile and come and live in the country he professes to love so much?
30

TimW1234,

Ottawa, Canada 13/06/2008 12:15:11
Mikko

I have no conception of what "argument" is fomenting in your fevered brain and your views are VERY "alternative".

The "sad views" may be yours as they emanate from a "Self Proclaimed" denigrator of any Scotman or Scotswomen who has accomplished fame and money outside of Scotland.
31

Mikko,

Drumnadrochit 13/06/2008 12:23:30
#30 Are you asking me to respect somebody who earns a few quid and then leaves his "beloved Scotland" just to avoid paying taxes?

Connery was my favourite Bond, so I'll probably buy his book. It is ironic he should be a SNP supporter, however, when the making of his own fortune was more than a little down to Connery being Brtiish - But he is entitled to his beliefs of course.

Interestingly, ex-Bond and fellow pensioner, Roger Moore, has his autobiography is coming out this summer as well. Some good reading for me, I think...

Billy Connolly has done more for Scotland than Sean Connery ever will.

Despite having the right to live in the States, he spends most of his time in Scotland. He also brings over his rich American pals to play golf in the home of golf.

Billy also does a lot for Scottish Charities that dosen't get publicised.

If Sir Sean is so supportive of Scotland and the SNP, why doesn't he live here?

There are plenty of Scots with his kind of money who choose to live here and support the SNP.

Cheers
Les

Oh, God help us!

The thread has now irrevocably descended into dangerous territory.

If I understand it correctly, under the terms of The Gospel According to Mikko, anybody who is poised and pointed in their comments and who DARES to contradict him has lost the argument.

Unless we adhere to his views and subscribe to his "gospel", we are lost souls and forever consigned to the flames of ignorance and stupidity.

I wish I were as self-confident and seemingly as infallible as Mikko.

Does this mean that this discussion is over because Mikko is in a snit, has taken his marbles home, and doesn't want to play with us any more?

Being Scottish is not about location. Sean IS Scottish!

The man is a LEGEND. We are not exactly thick on the ground with Legends at the moment. The man is globally known and mega successfull again we are not very thick on the ground with global success.

Totally out of order and pathetic complaints from people who know better.

He has never turned his back on his country nor pretended to not be Scottish like some living at number 10. NO!! He is Scottish and a Legend and Proud.

All those who are hating on Sir Sean. Who would not have wanted to be James Bond, getting pussie galore and money galore while living in total luxury.

What you would rather be living in Drum? Mikko? come on really?

I for one wish for independence so Scot's can improve their place in the world, go places, experience things and enhance our country and culture. I certainly would not be living here paying all my money in Tax to the London Treasury for them to waste if I had any choice. All those with good financial advice when they can afford to get out of UK due to Tax and Waste.

#3 Richard1 - I think you will find Scotland makes up about 8.5% of UK population and about 50% of SAS population. Who better to play a scots hero.

There are millions of Scots living all over the world. They are there for a myriad of reasons; financial, tax, the weather, climate, warmth, places where girls wear bikinis most of the year. Need I go on. Sir Sean got his knighthood from the Queen of Scotland who is decended from James VI, James VII. Remember most of Scotland did not want James VIII, hence the current line. She is also Queen of other Commonwealth countries settled by Scots. She spends far more time in Scotland than these other countries. We would enjoy seeing Sir Sean out here. Time for whingers to stop navel gazing and get a life.

From his web site, read and cry Mikko, you small minded fool.

Why don't read all his web site?

http://www.seanconnery.com/patronage/index.cfm

Sean Connery believes in helping others.
He has donated to and supported literally hundreds of charities. One little known fact about Sir Sean's philanthropy is that he donated his entire salary (well over $1 million) from his Bond film Diamonds Are Forever to the Scottish International Educational Trust which he co-founded. This generous grant — like his many other gifts — has benefited the lives of thousand of ordinary Scots. While not all of the many worthy charities he supports are mentioned on this site, Sir Sean would like you to consider helping others as he has.

"I hope you are enjoying my website. While you are here, I would ask that you take a few moments to consider helping someone else. I will continue to develop this non-commercial website and provide to you electronic greeting cards, wallpapers, and insider information about my career. But I would like you to do something for me in return — I would request that you help me to help others. The charities listed below encompass three areas that are very important to me: education, culture, and Scotland."

Please take a few moments of your time and support these wonderful organizations:

UK Tax exempt No: SC009207

The Scottish International Educational Trust (SIET) has funded millions of dollars for scholarships to young Scots and Scottish institutions.
