IT WAS a hazardous position 007 would surely never have allowed himself to get into.
But a jovial Sir Sean Connery was clearly immune to the dangers posed by a humble window frame as he tried to accommodate the demands of a pack of photographers yesterday.

The 78-year-old, who shot to fame in the first Bond film Dr No in 1962, became "Dr Sean" when he collected an honorary degree from Edinburgh Napier University.

The veteran Edinburgh-born actor had earlier survived a scare when the window frame slipped as he was posing for pictures at Napier's New Craig building at the Craighouse campus.

He laughed it off by comparing himself to the firebrand preacher John Knox.

Sir Sean's head was almost trapped by the window frame just seconds after joking to the watching press pack to "get off my land". Dressed in red, white and blue robes, a white bow tie and tartan trews, he said: "I must look like John Knox up here."

Sir Sean later chuckled as scenes from some of his best-known movies, including Dr No, Goldfinger, The Untouchables, The Name of the Rose and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade were shown at his graduation ceremony.

An audience of invited guests was given a potted history of the star's life, including his early prospects as a footballer, his stalled career in the navy, forays into modelling and how his first acting job was in a touring production of South Pacific.

Sir Sean, who is in the city to help promote the Edinburgh International Film Festival, was honoured by the university in recognition of his long acting career. He was also recognised for his patronage of Screen Academy Scotland, which was jointly set up by Napier and Edinburgh College of Art to nurture new film-making talent.

Sir Sean spoke of the "long and winding road" he had been on since growing up in Fountainbridge and leaving school at 13.

He added: "I know I could not be standing here accepting this splendid honour if I had not learned to read and write at the age of five. What is most interesting in all of this is that I never realised (its importance] until I was in my seventies. Being able to read and write has been key to everything I've done in my life."

Professor Dame Joan Stringer, the university's principal, said: "Sir Sean remains for many the only candidate worthy of the title 'greatest living Scot'."

She added: "He is an inspiration to so many people, but particularly to our students studying with the Screen Academy Scotland who would hope one day to work with such great actors as Sir Sean."

I don't care where Sean connery lives, he used to insist on filming in the uk, increasing the tax coffers for the british treasury although the kak handed media loved to have a go at him for not living in Scotland.

The real reason of course is because he supports Independence and the SNP, an unforgiveable crime eh? lol

Sean Connery is the coolest Scot, clever and erudite and hence this honour is given to him, far better than the likes of Billy Connoly, the fawning cap doffing little brit.

If Scotland ever becomes a Republic, with a President as head of state we could do a lot worse than elect Sean Connery as our First President.

His support of Scotland over the years has been unflagging and having someone as well known and respected as him would no doubt be very favourable for the newly Independent country.

Good actor.

I mean he pretends to be a socialist, and supports the high income tax associated with this ideology, while living in a tax haven.

Its worth an Oscar in itself.

BTW
Sean's keeping hold of his British passport while living in the Bahamas, in a gated community, with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.

Many mega-rich English Tory types live in the Bahamas to escape the left wing high income tax regime of the UK.

Our Sean feels at home there.

I cannot believe the crud which the anti- Scottish pro-union posters come out with about Sean Connery.

Good grief, he hasn't done anything to harm anybody, and all he ever does is promote Scotland. I just cannot believe the sniping against him, by sad little self loathing Scots. For heavens sake, take some pride in your country, and stop knocking a man who is a true living legend.

As for the dimwit whinging above about his career being 'washed up', for heavens sake, he's an old man now - what will you achieve in your sad little pathetic life????.

I just cannot believe the way the pro-union, Scotland hating, self-loathing Scots will jump at the chance to knock anything good about Scotland. It is truly cringeworthy.

As for him not living in Scotland - jeez how many of you would jump at the chance to live in Spain or the Bahamas if you had his money.

Un f***in beleivable.

It took to john z in Edinburgh to get any common sense.
I am not happy with the use of the word Legend but he certainly is a fine example of what any man can achieve with hard work and determination. I played a round of golf with him in 1960 he was just an ordinary man who swore when he duffed the ball like the rest of us.

There's no reason to be unpeleasant about Sir Sean.

He has had an impressive career as an actor and has done much good work for charity. In 1953, he entered the Mr. Universe contest, finishing third in the tall man's division.

He certainly deserves criticism for saying it was OK to hit a woman if they deserved it or needed it to keep them in line, and his pretensions to pronounce on the constitution of his former country while maintaining his home in far-off Bermuda are grating.

But this was his special day and he deserves our best wishes on his success.

Congratulations, Sir Sean.

It's called the "Ah kent his faither" syndrome.

Or more universally, "No-one is a prophet in his own land".

SC is a citizen of the world, internationally recognised as one of the greats of cinema, who has never ceased to sing the glories of his country of origin.

He is only belittled by those touched by the Scottish cringe.

Then there are those rather pathetic Little Britishers who subscribe to the philosophy that "any stick is good if it can be used to strike the SNP".

Sean Connery is the only Scot around today of whom Scotland can be proud - he is intelligent, worldly and has done so much for Scotland. He came from humble beginnings and should be given credit for what he has achieved. His good looks started him off on the course his life has taken but he was capable and talented enough to progress from there. He should be an inspiration to everyone to make something of their lives. I am immensely proud of him and wish him well.

I dont know why Sean Connery is described as a great actor? James Bond was not exactly stretching anyones acting talent.

Sean Connery took on the role of James Bond for Diamonds are Forever in '71 and contributed his earnings to start of a Scottish Youth charity.

The daily record, and no doubt many Scottish newspapers, would love Sean Connery if he was someone who backed the union and supported labour, well, he has certainly been proven correct in supporting neither. ;-)

Joe Plaice,

the Nutmeg of Consolation 20/06/2009 16:07:37
He is a great actor because he starred in a wide variety of films, not just James Bond, and put his personal stamp on every one of them. He may be said to have played himself in every role, but who says that is easy? If you mention his name to a movie buff, chances are that they will be able to rattle off the names of almost every film in which he appeared, such is his screen presence. When he was in his late fifties/early sixties, he was still being voted one of the worlds sexiest men. He lives in a tax haven and yet still pays tax in Britain. He is so tight fisted that he has started charities and contributed thousands of pounds to Scottish causes. Aye, he's no really what you would call up to snuff....if you're a wee whinging runt yersel that is.

I could not write at five, in fact, I had just started school at that age and I only remember receiving writing lessons in our second year. Clearly he was much smarter than he really is!!
