THIS was not the send-off from Tynecastle that Hearts wanted, but it was perhaps appropriate. And it is equally fitting that all that remains of this season for them now is an away fixture against Gretna. It promises to be a suitably low-key and sombre occasion.
It could also be Gretna's last game – but how much more certain is Hearts' future? "Now we wait for the Gretna game, which we'll be going out to win," said Stevie Frail as he reflected on this 2-0 home defeat to Kilmarnock. But he struggled to muste
r enthusiasm, noting the "apathy" that afflicted his players during their final home game of an uninspired season.

For Kilmarnock, who have also endured a difficult season, the victory offered "a wee lift", as Jim Jefferies put it. "We didn't cause them any problems at all in the first half," noted Jefferies, "but in the second half we played really well. We started to pass it better and we were the better team all round."

One of Jefferies' best players was Paul Dalglish, whose cross set up the 82nd-minute second goal for Paul Di Giacomo, who'd come on as a substitute 12 minutes earlier. Dalglish was a danger on the right wing all afternoon, a powerful runner who supplied consistently threatening crosses, and Jefferies now has to decide whether to extend his stay at Rugby Park into next season. "I'll not be deciding anything until the last game," said Jefferies. "But we definitely need some fresh blood in."

Di Giacomo's goal finished the game, coming after Grant Murray's header, on 74 minutes, stunned the home supporters.

Hearts had chances in the first half but Frail was honest enough in his assessment not to blame the defeat on bad luck. "We had possession, but without hurting them," said the Hearts coach. "We had half chances. But we didn't do enough when we had the ball to really hurt them.

"When the first goal goes in you know it's going to be a long haul," he continued. "Then they get the second one, and that sums up the whole season. There has been a lot more fight in the squad, but we seem to have lost it. I'm not going to openly criticise the players because there has been a vast improvement since January. But it's disappointing the way the season is petering out."

As for the future, with Hearts still rumoured to be looking for an experienced manager to take over, Frail is unsure what the club's owner, Vladimir Romanov, is planning. "I've never sought assurances from Mr Romanov," said Frail. "I've just tried to do my best. I treat every game like my last, just as I did as a player. You've got to do that."

Such an approach means that Frail hasn't thought too much about what changes need to be made to Hearts' playing staff. "A lot of players are on long contracts," he noted.

"But we need an overhaul of the whole squad. That might not mean bringing in bundles of players, because we've gone down that road before, but bringing in good players to help the kids. Guys like (Jason] Thomson and (Gary] Glen – we need experienced players who can come in and help these guys develop."

For Hearts the pain continues, but Jefferies, whose Kilmarnock team could still finish third-bottom, rather than second-bottom in the SPL, is praying it might be over. "I'm hoping the pain of this season might be a driving force next season," said Jefferies. "We don't want to go through that again."

A big game versus Gretnas to decide bottom six championship.

But when will Hearts have medallion presentation? I think Vladimir will arrive to present medallion. It will be great honour for player to meet great Russian business man.

As far as the Gretna game is concerned...who cares.
Our focus now is who is our NEW repeat New manager going to be, and WHEN is he coming.
When Shaggy was given temporary charge, the thinking amongst the guys beside me in the Wheatfield, was ..this won't work! My mates felt it was a smokescreen, and Frail was just the puppet Vlad was looking for.
It didn't work, but sadly the strings were still being pulled.
I await an official announcement from, either, our director of football, or majority shareholder.
Once upon a time I'd be excited about such an appointment, now, I'm crapping myself.

The weekend past sums up a pretty disastours season for both Edinburgh clubs.

Hearts fail to beat Kilmarnock and finish bottom six & Hibs finally give up the ghost on catching Motherwell for third after losing to Celtic.

Poor season all round, some of my fellow Hibby's will claim that at least we finished better than Hearts but to me that is not good enough. Hibs & Hearts should be finishing ahead of the likes of Motherwell (who to be fair have had a very good season I must add), if unable to challenge the OF at the very least the two Edinburgh clubs should be fighting out for 3rd between themselves but its been poor all round I'm afraid.

Hopefully a better season awaits in 08/09. The only crumb of comfort for us is that we may sneak into the UEFA cup through the intertattie but going on past performances in that I wont be holding my breath.

By the way, any Hearts fan coming on here and slagging Frail can GTF as far as I am concerned.

HE is not the problem. HE has not put us in this position.

After the game, thousands of 'loyal' Hearts fans went TO THE PUB and left a handful of supporters to wait for the players at the Main Entrance to make their feelings known.

But hey, if an over-priced lager in the Ardmillan is worth more than fighting for the club then fair enough.

We had our chance to make a point, the media would have lapped it up and shown it nationwide but no, all you could see was an apathetic support slithering off into the distance to shout lidly in pubs about how much they love the club and how much they want to sort it.

You had your chance.

Johnny Jambo,

#9 Indie, With the utmost respect mate, a few fans shouting the odds after another meaningless match is never going to change things at ynecastle, it needs a more organised approach with many fans involved even if the mad one would listen which I doubt. Thosewho went for that pint were probably as p????d off as you who were at the demo but had just had enough so don't kick them they are not to blame for the fiasco that is HMFC.
11

Indie Rep Kid,

12/05/2008 09:20:50
#10 That's my point. A few fans shouting the odds makes no difference, although it makes them sleep better.

But it's better than sitting in the pub moaning about it - I don't blame them but it's a time for action, not apathy because, if we carry on like this, it will be too late.
12

Denis Law,

Kaunas 12/05/2008 09:29:50

Talk is easy, action define great man. But you are still boy I think.

GrahamL,

#10 You've got to start somewhere though. Maybe a handful protesting one week will be followed by many more the next. Obviously, on this occassion, far too late. "next week" is in fact many months away. I'd support anyone trying to make the point to the powers that be that the fans aren't happy. And it'll be interesting to see if there's more support if we're still in the same mess come August...
Ultimately though, I'd agree with you that in order to make the point properly there needs to be proper organisation. But it's not clear to me who's going to do that, maybe one of the guys making his point on Saturday will be able to build on it?

It would have been better if great HoM supporters played golf on Saturday than endure that drivel that's being classed as football.

There's also less divots on a golf course.

#8 Spot On!

IRK - Lets not go down the I care more about Hearts than you route, it's tiresome and not very productive. FWIW I stayed behind in the ground for a good while after the game, mainly reflecting on what an abysmal season this has been and how that game typified it, I did then continue this torture over a few jars in the pub. Shouting at the players wouldn't make a difference, none of them care. If you do want to make a difference or have a proper protest, I would suggest organising something, if enough people feel the way you do then that shouldn't be a problem.

As for Frail, I accept he hasn't put us in this postition, however, I don't think I have ever agreed with his selection or his tactics, you could argue that it has not been his selection or tactics, in which case I would accept that IF you could see that he was motivating the players, anyone think he has done that? Frail is not the cause of all of our problems, but he is also not the solution so must go.

Another great 0-2 result this weekend. Not for HoM, but our beloved FBK Kauno.

0-2 away to Zalgiris with Grigalevicius once again scoring.

He may play HoM in 2008/09 season to showcase talent for UBIG

ah well, at least the hobos failed to get into europe. even after their best season for decades.

our season was over a long time ago, our worst season for decades.

Indie Rep Kid,

#16 I never meant it like that as I am in no way a better fan than anyone but it's frustrating to see people walk away.

I don't blame them. I don't blame anyone for renewing and I don't blame anyone for NOT renewing. I don't blame those who support the team and applaud them off no matter the result and I don't blame those who leave with 20 minutes to go.

I only blame one or two people for this and it's about time they were confronted.

But hey ho, it's the summer and i'm looking forward to digging out my flip flops for a summer of lazing in the garden (a bit like Larry has done for a month).

I'll be back in August for more of the same. Why? Because it's what football fans do.
20

Who?,

12/05/2008 10:01:28
To be honest the result never mattered. I and many other season ticket holders haven't been to a game since the 0-0 vs falkirk. Most hearts fans i've spoken to couldn't stomach another dire waste of time. Its rather sad as we've paid for the tickets and that money's gone to waste, however for many it will be the last season ticket they will buy while vlad is still in charge.

While frail isn't the problem he is neither the solution. His blindness towards elliot is evidence towards that.

YES a NEW manager is a must, however if one is appointed i get a feeling that many may not like who we get!

Another totally unconstructive post with the sole purpose of attempting to wind Hibs fans up.

I think my original post summed up most football fans in Edinburgh's feelings of the last season pretty well for both sides of the divide.

However you arent really a football fan at all are you? Just an idiot with nothing else to do with his time? Why not try looking at your own clubs woes like IRK and others rather than your perpetual infatuation with one upmanship against us.

As for Europe, well at least we were still in with a shout until yesterday & we will enter the intertattie in another attempt to qualify. How will your team attempt to qualify.... Ohhh thats right tou wont.
22

B4 Part B,

12/05/2008 10:08:35
IRK - Fair enuff, I know what u mean regarding leaving but even when we have been doing well or its a big game and its really close there are still people that leave with 5-10 mins to go, I don't get it but thats just the way some folk are.

Its weird but I will miss it during the summer, no matter how terrible we have been I just can't stay away! So will definately be back next season! Is it a wonder I drink so much?
23

Glorious Hearts,

12/05/2008 10:09:39
Frail isn't the problem or the solution. He also isn't to blame, he's to be thanked for trying his best in my opinion.
What we had here was a group of players playing with no motivation or belief and things need to get better for the new season.
Only time will tell who the new manager will be and what the new season will bring but I'm glad this one's nearly over
24

Prof,

12/05/2008 10:26:22
#8 Very fair and good post. Hibs, with less resources, have done better than Hearts this season. Its happened before and will happen again.
Hearts problems are very simple - with a few exceptions, a squad of lazy overpaid mercenaries, masquerading as players. Frail did ok, but he has no real authority. What are guys like Nade, Chesney, Miko, Tall, Goncalves, Kingston, Pinilla, Beslija, Krapidis, Scrapsis doing at Tynecastle. Absolute bunch of useless jokers.
On a different subject - strange to hear that windbag Traynor whingeing about bias refs at Ibrox on Saturday. Didn't he and his fellow BBC pundits call Vlad mad when he made the same accusation?
25

scorchio,

West of the Pecos 12/05/2008 10:34:00
"Indie Rep Kid"...You need to chill out. Hearts fans who "sleek out" or "go for a pint" are not the problem, and frankly should be applauded for paying over the top, to follow thhis crap.
I left when Shaggy made yet another laughable substitution.
Under Frail some of the performances have been as bad as anything under Korobotchup. Sure he's not the only person who is culpable for our demise, but he is part of a collective, and all of them deserve to be lambasted for utter failure on every count.
If you are angry at folk who pay to follow the team, I think it'ss difficult for me to understand how you can defend someone who is paid to "manage" the team so poorly.
26

Jacobite,

12/05/2008 10:37:06

Frail cannot get the respect of the players to motivate them, and there is also deadwood that needs to be removed before the team can flourish, and I'm afraid Shaggy heads the list

Hearts need a new manager, someone who can kick ass and is not afraid of mad Vlad but whether that day comes is another story.

Its another saga of will Vlad put his money where his mouth is.

27

Johnny Jambo,

12/05/2008 10:46:40
IRK - I would be very interested in any actions being taken although I think we need to do more than just demonstrate outside the ground, as that would just be another pimple on vlads bum and nothing more and he would not listen. Something more official and organised, I think, is needed.

Best Season in decades? Dear o dear Vic, sometimes you come across like a right bitter old 'yam'.

I would argue that the seasons where we finished 3rd or won a cup may be considered better.

Indie Rep Kid,

Scorchio - you'll need to forgive me today cos i'm in a very bad mood about this club (and the weather!) so everyone is in the firing line.

Being hassled by some stupid cop (Officer 3577) for 90 minutes on Saturday did not help either. The sort of Fascist scumbag who gives decent cops a bad name.

I did say in a later post that I don;t blame the fans but am frustrated by our apathy.

It's also frustrating that we canot direct our anger anywhere because the sole focus for it is never there.

Apologies to anyone I may have offended (except the cop)as I know we are all Jambos who care equally.

33

JamboThrough&Through,

12/05/2008 11:07:53
IRK I agree with some of the things you say smetimes but on this occasion I have to say i totally disagree. Frail is a problem and a problem that should have walked a long time ago if he had any self respect. I liked Frail as a man but i can say that as each week goes by any respect i had for him dwindles, and im at the point where im angry with him, Iam not the only fan that feels this way. We know the problems are not all Frails fault but on the field his tactical inexperience and know-how let us down as does the fact the players obviosly have no respect for their manager.

As for this protest. Where were you lot some 5 months ago when i was on here calling for protests? I said at the time people would wait till the end of the season when its too late to make any real difference. I was calling for protests 5 months ago outside ricarton and UKIO interests, and involving the media and well known people. I was laughed at and told dont be stupid, or told give Vlad a chance to see if he comes through on his word.

34

Indie Rep Kid,

12/05/2008 11:08:17
#27 No way to demonstrate now the season is over so all we can do is cross our fingers and hope Vlad wakes up.

Somehow I doubt it.
35

Indie Rep Kid,

12/05/2008 11:11:29
#33 I know Frail is a problem but he is not THE problem. He was thrown in at the deep end and has bee nfound wanting (although I would like to see ANY club try to compete when they sell their top scorer after the transfer window has closed).

If it's not Frail, it's some other poor stooge who will have his own favourites and his own fax machine so it may as well be Frail for now.

And I was well up for protesting 5 months ago, outside Riccarton and UKIO Bankas etc. If we were Italians, the players would need a police escort to go to training these days. These folk who keep saying "give it time" or "wait to see what the summer brings" are mad. Mad, I tell ya!!
36

huggs,

Frail is not the cause of this but he is a massive part of it

Its understandable, you Jambos appear rather hurt just now. Its probably worse too, seeing as you are the self appointed Big Team. I would say the mighty have fallen, but then Hearts have never really been mighty have they. ; )

~IRK: as one of the 'wait & see what the summer brings' brigade i would justify my sanity as follows;
- every one INCLUDING VR recognises that the problem relates to the mismanagement of overpaid/underperforming players.Made worse by his constant interference.
- he has publicly stated his intention to appoint a new more appropriate manager/afford him attonomy/rid us of underperforming stars/replace them with more appropriate players with suitable incentives to perform.
- There will be tangible evidence one way or the other over the next few weeks.

I remain optimistic that he will deliver. (NB optimistic not convinced)

If that makes me 'mad' then so be it.

I certanly wouldn't rule it out. After all the Bulls**t about an experienced manager with british football experience, this will not happen I am sure.

What I do know is th Stevie Frail must step down, I know he has some good qualities but as the main man, no chance, and he has lost the respect of the players I think.
