HIBERNIAN defender Darren McCormack has apologised to Heart of Midlothian striker Calum Elliot after being fined £1,000 and convicted for assault at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.
McCormack, 20, who punched Elliot, 21, in the face outside an Edinburgh club last month, also made it clear he regretted letting his own club down in what was an act of unacceptable behaviour.

"I want to publicly apologise to Calum Elliot for wh
at happened," he said. "I would also like to say sorry to the supporters and everyone connected with Hibernian. The whole episode was completely unacceptable in terms of the standards expected by the club, and I deeply regret my behaviour."

McCormack has also been disciplined by Hibs, though the club preferred to keep their own action confidential. Hibs chief Executive Scott Lindsay explained : "Darren's actions on the night in question were completely unacceptable under any circumstances. Hibernian will not tolerate behaviour of this type and Darren realises that he needs to set an example given his privileged position as a professional footballer.

"The matter has now been properly settled by the courts, and Darren has already been dealt with through the club's own disciplinary procedure, the outcome of which will remain private between the club and player." The incident took place in Edinburgh's George Street in the early hours of 22 March.

The court heard how there had been an argument before McCormack confronted Elliot and punched him on the right side of the face.

Elliot was taken to hospital where he was X-rayed for a suspected broken cheekbone but escaped serious injury.

The Hearts striker was recently named the SPL's Young Player of the Month for April.

Pretty normal behaviour by that bunch of skanks.
Elliot tell the hobo where to stick his apology.

Well said. Shame the braindead #2 forgot to read it.

Sadly another example of a young professesional footballer not knowing how to conduct themself, something which is apparently prevalent nowadays. I'd suggest that rather than fining him, the court may have been better served giving him Community Service in a form which may actually make him think about his actions.

#2 whilst not defending McCormack in any way you should remember that Elliot was not entirely inactive in the incident and indeed was himself the major reason he got a punch in the jaw.

Elliot should learn to keep his mouth shut, he is lucky not to have caused a mass brawl involving police, players and mates in the City Centre. It seems to be a typical case of Elliot starting something he could not finish.

#5 - and of course the poor wee angelic, completely-above-reproach Hibs player had nothing to do with it and was only acting in self-defence......

A decent, honourable man would have walked away, everybody knows Elliot is still a bit of a silly wee laddie.

The facts are that Elliot and McCormack already had a history of bad blood after playing against each other in youth teams. Elliot had made similar comments to McCormack in the past and Elliot made a deliberately antagonising remark to McCormack with a view to winding him up. McCormack has a drink in him and with his mates and you expect him to walk away, not in the real world Rosco, Elliot got what he deserved.

In the world of the wee ned, maybe he did get what he deserved.

I'm not saying Elliot was blameless, just that if you're dumb enough to go around hitting people in the street, even if you were wound up, you can't say you had nothing to do with it. I can virtually guarantee McCormack didn't come back with a Wildean riposte anyway. No, he decided to think with his fists instead. Classy stuff from both sides, both boys need a kick up the backside.

Thank you for the chat, we'll just have to agree to disagree. As you say yourself both boys need a kick up the backside but unfortunately only McCormack is getting it.
