DWAIN Chambers fully expects to come away from the EnBW Weltklasse Biberach international meeting tonight with the Olympic 100 metres 'A' qualifying standard.

Chambers ranks that as his top priority before his solicitors take legal action to try to overturn a British Olympic Association (BOA) lifetime ban preventing former drug cheats from competing not only in Beijing but at future Games.

The 30-year-old Londoner would almost certainly have achieved the required time of 10.21 seconds a fortnight ago but a strong headwind spoilt his attempt at Crystal Palace.

"I'm very confident about what shape I'm in and it's just a matter of putting the right race together in the right place at the right time," he said after his last outing.

Chambers has, for the present, distanced himself from the legal proceedings his lawyers are preparing in his bid to have the BOA bylaw rescinded.

"That's not my field," said Chambers. "I'm confident what I can do on the track and they're confident they can do what is necessary off it."

BADMINTON
SOUTH Korea's hopes of badminton gold at the Beijing Olympics suffered a blow on yesterday when the head coach of the national badminton team was suspended amid a police investigation into allegations of embezzlement.

The Korean Badminton Association said it had suspended head coach Kim Jung-soo, who is being investigated on allegations of misappropriation of public funds at a regional badminton organisation where he is an executive.

BOXING
ROY Jones Jr expects to fight two-weight world champion Joe Calzaghe in September in the Welshman's farewell fight. Unbeaten Calzaghe and Jones, legendary American, have reached an initial agreement to stage their showdown later this year – probably in Cardiff – when they intend to split the promotional duties between themselves.

Calzaghe, 36, who will relinquish his WBC super-middleweight title to fight Jones rather than defend against mandatory challenger Carl Froch, will retire after the lucrative clash with the four-weight world champion. While the fight is expected to be rubber-stamped within the next two weeks, Jones has indicated he expects the contest to be staged on September 20. He told www.boxingtalk.com: "Calzaghe and I are going to be fighting this fall. They are holding September 20 or November 15 for us, but right now it's looking like September 20."

WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev has suffered a complete tear of the Achilles tendon in his left ankle and has been forced to withdraw from his 5 July mandatory defence against former title-holder Nikolai Valuev.

MANNY Pacquiao is expecting the fight of his life as he attempts to complete his "drive for five" tonight when he faces WBC lightweight champion David Diaz at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

A legend in his native Philippines and one of the sport's most popular fighters thanks to his exciting style, Pacquiao enters his battle against Diaz trying to complete a quest to capture five world titles in as many weight classes.

Pacquiao's WBC super featherweight belt is not on the line. Already a title winner at flyweight, super-bantamweight, featherweight and super-featherweight, Pacquiao enters the bout against Diaz having won his last seven fights since losing to Erik Morales in March 2005.

Included in that winning streak is a pair knockout wins over Morales.

Despite his recent success, the 29-year-old Pacquiao (46-3-2, 35KOs) is preparing for a war against Diaz, a fellow southpaw. "This will be my hardest-fought battle," said Pacquiao, who won a split decision over Juan Manuel Marquez in March to capture the super-featherweight crown.

"It has been over three years since I have changed weight divisions and I will be doing it against the lightweight division's world champion. But this is my drive for five world titles in five different weight classes and I will not be denied. I am fighting for history, for destiny and for the people of the Philippines."

CYCLING
FLOYD Landis will discover the outcome of his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Monday. Landis is appealing against his disqualification from the 2006 Tour de France and subsequent two-year ban.

He was stripped of his title and banned for two years after he was found guilty of doping during the 2006 Tour. The 32-year-old then appealed to CAS in October for an annulment of the decision.

AUSTRALIA's best mountain biker Chris Jongewaard has been overlooked for the team for the Beijing Olympics because he is facing criminal charges.

Jongewaard is Australia's highest-ranked rider but was not considered for the 28-member cycling squad named yesterday.

Jongewaard faces charges over a hit-and-run driving incident last year in which fellow cyclist and training partner Matthew Rex sustained head injuries.

"The committee believes it cannot in good faith nominate Chris Jongewaard," Cycling Australia said in a statement, adding that the rider had until Tuesday to decide whether to appeal.

OLYMPICS
Bulgaria withdrew its national weightlifting team from the Beijing Olympics yesterday after 11 members of the team failed dope tests, the national weightlifting federation said.

The weightlifters were tested during a training camp in the Balkan country over 8-9 June while preparing for August's Olympics, the federation said in a statement. The 11 weightlifters tested positive for the banned anabolic substance methandienon.

SWIMMING
CHINA's top backstroke swimmer Ouyang Kunpeng has been banned for life for a doping offence just 42 days before the start of the Beijing Olympics.

he Chinese Swimming Association (CSA) confirmed yesterday that Ouyang had tested positive for an illegal substance, thought to be anabolic steroids, dealing the Olympic host nation an embarrassing blow.

The 25-year-old Ouyang won three individual silver medals at the 2006 Asian Games and three golds at the 2003 world university games.

He tested positive in an out-of-competition test on 1 May.

His coach Feng Shangbao has also been banned for life.

Ouyang is the biggest-name Chinese swimmer to fail a dope test for several years following the country's sudden rise to swimming superpower status – one that was clouded by suspicions of systematic doping.
