All eyes on George Burley as SFA decides

IN THE heads of the four-man interview panel at least, the identity of the next Scotland manager is definitely known, with George Burley emerging as the man the Scottish Football Association wants to succeed Alex McLeish.
The decision needs to be ratified by the ten-man SFA board, but this is regarded as simply a matter of course. Southampton, the club where Burley has managed for just over two years, will then be contacted to discuss the matter of compensation.

Burley would, of course, have to accept the post himself, although he spoke last week of what an "honour" it would be to manage the national team.

The four-man interview panel confirmed yesterday that they had reached a "unanimous decision", with Burley thought to have impressed them most during the interview procedure. The group, made up by chief executive Gordon Smith, president George Peat and vice-presidents Campbell Ogilvie and Alan McCrae, are understood to be keen to hand Burley the chance to lead Scotland to the World Cup finals in South Africa in 2010. The new manager's first match in charge will be a friendly against Croatia at Hampden Park in March and he is expected to be unveiled before the week is out.

If Burley gets the nod, it will leave Graeme Souness, Tommy Burns and Mark McGhee as unsuccessful candidates, although the last named will perhaps be relieved to be able to get on with managing Motherwell after a traumatic past month. Souness and Burns have both been heavily touted in recent days but Burley is reported to have edged ahead at precisely the right time.

"All I can say is congratulations to George," said a magnanimous McGhee, talking before his side's Scottish Cup replay with Hearts last night. "I think he will be a terrific Scottish manager and I will do all I can to help him."

McGhee added: "(I would be] disappointed, yes, absolutely disappointed, but I was flattered to be one of the candidates who was even considered for the job. That was a huge thing for me. I'm terribly proud of being Scottish, having played for my country, and I would have been proud to be manager.

"But life goes on. I think whoever the manager is going to be, if it is George or whoever, I'll be right behind them."

Meanwhile, Peat explained: "I am going in (to Hampden] tomorrow with the hope we might get something tied down either tomorrow or Thursday. We are targeting the end of the week, and all going well it will be resolved in the next two days. It's dragged on a bit to be honest, but with the situation at Motherwell we thought we would let things lie for a while."

Motherwell only played their first game at home since skipper Phil O'Donnell's death last night, and the tragic incident meant that McGhee had other tasks to fulfil before clearing his head prior to the interview process.

Burley was interviewed for the post on Monday, after his side's weekend draw with Plymouth. This match could well mark the end of Burley's tenure at Southampton, with the side currently 13th in the Championship. The club have an FA Cup fourth-round tie against Bury this weekend.

It could also bring to an end a club management career which began when he was appointed player-coach at Ayr United in 1991. Burley, who played 11 times for Scotland between 1979 and 1982, has since built a reputation as a popular and astute manager at Colchester United, Ipswich Town and Derby County. He is best known in Scotland for his short but spectacular spell in charge of Hearts. When he left after a fall-out with owner Vladimir Romanov, Hearts were sitting top of the Premier League, having amassed nine wins and two draws in 11 matches.

He returned to England with his reputation further enhanced although he has found it tougher with Southampton, where he was appointed manager in December 2005. He worked originally with former England rugby union coach Sir Clive Woodward, controversially appointed director of football. Woodward left within nine months. Although Burley led the team to a play-off place last season, his old club Derby extinguished the Premiership dream. This season has seen Southampton lodged in mid-table.

Interestingly, one of Burley's current coaching assistants at Southampton is John Gorman who, despite being a Scot, once assisted Glenn Hoddle during his period as England manager. Malcolm Webster is Burley's regular right-hand man, and is presently at Southampton. Simon Hunt, like Webster a member of Burley's backroom team at Tynecastle, was named technical director at Tony Mowbray's West Bromwich Albion in the summer but left the post last month.

Sound judgement by the SFA. Burley's a class act and easily the best man available.

Not a good appointment as far as I am concerned. Being a national manager you do not get time to work with players, so all you really need is motivational skills and tactical skills. Burley may be OK tactically, but he is not a motivator. Same goes for Burns. Both McGhee and Souness have both in my opinion. Souness seemingly wants to do other things closer to his Chester base, so it would leave McGhee as the man.

best choice out of the four i'd say. First time for years that we've actually got some players for a decent manager to work with so lack of motivational prowess (if any?) is not as important. Heres to a long overdue qualification section victory

As a known 'Rangers man' Burley will be given latitude by the media and fans alike. I'm delighted it's not Tommy Burns as he would be getting savaged this very minute.

If Burley is a success the laptop loyal will soon tout him to replace 'Walter' when he leaves.

Well done you ar*e. You have single handedly brought this story down to the sewer with your allegation that Burley is a Rangers man with the implications that you propose.

I have never seen or heard of any link between Rangers and Burley, have you or is it a figment of your twisted imagination?

It's Scotland. I can only assume #18 has never been to a Scotland game because my experience is that your own team doesn't come in to it.

As 22 said, well done.

#18 Let's keep sectarian nonsense out of this... everyone else is bored of you people.

George Burley is the right appointment... only McGhee was as good a candidate, but rightly he is staying with Motherwell. Tommy Burns has no track record as a No.1 (well, not one you'd want, anyhow) and Souness is a divisive radge with an overfed ego.

Great timing as well as the "home nation" tournament will give the new man a chance to settle into the role.

Regardless of whether Burley is the man for the job, this is yet another absolutely shameful act by the SFA. Not one candidate has been notified officially yet they all hear it through the BCC last night. Nobody from the SFA thought fit to telephone the unsuccessful candidates. Yet another example of the yob culture that permeates the SFA and the West Coast in particular.

Congrats to Mr Burley. lets hope he stays in the job and won't do a Walter S. or McCleish if the EPL or one of the OF come a knocking.

Still have to say it's a shame the SFA didn't look further afield for a more experienced internationalist for the job. They burnt their fingers with Berti and of course will never admit that they did.
What a pity none of them have a little bit of vision to have found us a Guus Hiddink type

Alan B,

Thought Burley or McGee were good choices. So if it Burley that is good news.

Cannot understand why Burns was even considered. Do not think this process was a particularly good one. International managers should be employed for a qualification campaign and if we are looking again in 2 yrs we would want the others available. Being publicly rejected does not necessarily enhance that prospect.

For those critising the list you have to admit, it is far better than previous choice like Roxburgh and Brown, neither having any sort of pedigree. Why in these times Mclean or Graham were never selected.

28

Steve_HMFC,

23/01/2008 10:24:25
Burley was definitely the best choice out of the four. Souness would fall out with everyone, Burns is a no.2 not a gaffer and Mcghee was only considered cos m'well have had a good season of which is only half way over..

One thing about GB is he has left a couple of clubs under controversy(even if you dont include JT's)

Shame we have to go through this 'B Team' to find a manager and that the 'A Team' of Fergie, Moyes and Strachan wouldnt even be slightly tempted.. and that our last two managers have left for mediocre jobs
29

Prof,

#30 Where did I say all west coasters are yobs. I said yob culture permeates the SFA and the west coast. Theres a massive difference.
#26 Also wrong- I said the BBC told the candidates last night on Sportsound. Which they did, after being breifed by the SFA.

The Federalist (the poster formerly know as NAUON),

Was never particularly inspired by the shortlist of 4 but he was for me the only candidate we could appoint. Burns should never have been near the list - it's like he did not ever have any responsibility for the Vogts debacle. Souness would have been far too divisive and in any case is a manager who needs a bulging wallet to succeed. McGhee was only prepared to go at the end of the season - too late in my opinion to build up for the World Cup qualifiers.

Burley showed in his brief spell at Hearts and with previous clubs that he is tactically aware and does get the best out of limited resources - I wish him well in the post.

Alternative headline: Scots fans favour GB - Shocker!

:-)

I really think Burley is the man and as for the comment that these are "the best of the bunch" what about the fact that the En**ish couldn't find one serious candidate and had to look for a continental manager. Burley could be an inspiring manager; he certainly digs performances out of players. Not sure how he handles the press but provided he gets the results he can be as inarticulate as he wants and I won't mind.

Croatia at Hampden in March will be a good tester for him and will perhaps show what this team of ours can do against a team who know how to pass and move. Let's make it a full Hampden and give them a real Scots welcome!

I think a very good choice, although took the opputunity to look at a couple of Southampton messageboards and came across a few to many messages like this :

agree with Kernow on this...

When Burley was appointed, we were well pleased. Last season, we played well, but NEVER had the killer instinct, and SHOULD have finished higher.

This season, we have all become increasingly annoyed with the constant positional changes and players playing out of position - and decent players (aka Rasiak, Saga and Skatchel) wasted on the bench...

No hard feelings towards GB, but time for a fresh approach - just hope the board can make the right appointment.

"england get capello and we get burley....yeh right"
-------------------------------------------------------

- Yes, and they are paying him 15-20 times as much as we are going to be paying Burley. Do you really think they will get 15-20 times the return? Win 15-20 times as many games? 15-20 times as many Championships?

England have fallen into the trap of paying megabucks to another foreign manager. Really worked out well for them last time, right? Capello took the England job for the huge quantities of cash which will be thrown at him (just hope he remembers to pay tax on it), not for his love of England.

Burley? A passionate Scot who, if the stories are true, will be taking a pay CUT for the honour of leading his country. That's the kind of guy I want in charge of my team, not some Euro-chasing mercenary.

Given the other options Burley was the best choice, in fact I'm so pleased to see the SFA make a sensible decision on this one I'm almost frightened to believe it! Or to put it another way: if the alternative had been TB, I'd have been absolutely raging, so this appointment has to be good news.

We criticise the SFA often enough, and often with plenty justification, so it is only right to praise them when they make a decent decision. So, if it all comes to fruition over the next couple of days, well done Gordon Smith et al.

And all the best to George - already looking forward to (hopefully) his first match in charge against Croatia.
