Scholes sent off as Sir Alex is humbled by Advocaat in Uefa glamour final
PAUL Scholes was sent off as Manchester United squandered a chance of lifting a trophy only two weeks into the season.

The former England midfielder's rash action in the final moments of the match saw him dismissed by referee Claus Bo Larsen. Scho
les, who had been booked earlier, got a second yellow for a deliberate handball in the area with United looking to draw level.

Ferguson said: "It was maybe an instinctive thing he did, it was a bit unfortunate." However, after learning the former England player would be ruled out of the home game against Villarreal, Ferguson grimaced and said through gritted teeth: "It happens."

Pavel Pogrebnyak opened the scoring and Danny, who cost an astonishing £24million, extended their lead before Nemanja Vidic pulled a goal back.

While there will be bigger prizes to win than the Uefa Super Cup, and more competitive games, it is clear the Champions League holders are thin on numbers in attack.

Cristiano Ronaldo helped lighten their load in spectacular fashion last season with 42 goals. But he is currently sidelined through injury and United, not surprisingly, miss his cunning and eye for goal. Dimitar Berbatov could be the missing link as Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez worked hard but could not break down the Russian side, who sealed a memorable victory.

Former Rangers manager Dick Advocaat has won widespread acclaim for the way he has transformed Zenit and turned them into winners. The Russians chalked up a notable double last season securing the Uefa Cup and their domestic title. And it was obvious from the start that their confidence was high.

With Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick both sidelined, Anderson and Nani were given added responsibility in midfield. However, they struggled to make an impact and Nani in particular looked rusty after suspension.

United were anxious to make up for the disappointment of losing to Lazio the last time they appeared in the Super Cup nine years ago. But it was quickly apparent that would not be easy as Pogrebnyak peeled away from his marker before spooning his effort over the top. United responded and Tevez sent a shot into the body of Vyacheslav Maleev after 19 minutes.

Zenit carried a threat for set-pieces, though, and a superb free kick from Alejandro Dominguez went narrowly wide of the post five minutes later .

Rooney almost put United ahead in the 35th minute after a surging run by Tevez, only for the goalkeeper to make a marvellous block.

Ivica Krizanac came close after another good free kick from Dominguez, and Danny headed wide in the 42nd minute before Pogrebnyak made the breakthrough. He headed in at the back post after Igor Denisov had flicked on a corner from Dominguez to leave United rattled.

The unsettled Andrei Arshavin, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham, came on for Zenit at the start of the second half but Rooney gave them a scare in the 56th minute, getting clear on the edge of the area only to see his effort go narrowly wide of the post.

Tempers flared a minute later when Vidic and Pogrebnyak were left on the floor in a nasty clash of heads. Anderson, in particular took exception to the challenge and was booked for his troubles.

Zenit stunned United again in the 60th minute by extending their lead with a magnificent effort from Danny, who ran from deep, shrugged off Rio Ferdinand and cut inside before rifling a shot beyond Edwin Van der Sar.

United were stung but pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute when Vidic scored from close range after Tevez had cut the ball back from the byline.

Substitute John O'Shea almost pulled United level in the 86th minute, only to see his header tipped away by the goalkeeper.

Zenit then launched a counterattack and Danny chipped Van der Sar but his effort went over the bar.

United's irritation at playing second fiddle to Zenit was emphasised at the death when Scholes lost his cool and was dismissed.

Man Utd: Van der Sar, Neville (Brown 76), Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Fletcher (O'Shea 60), Anderson (Park 60), Scholes, Nani, Rooney, Tevez. Subs not used: Kuszczak, Gibson, Campbell, Possebon. Sent Off: Scholes (90). Booked: Scholes, Anderson, Tevez.

Zenit St Petersburg: Malafeev, Krizanac (Radimov 70), Aniukov, Puygrenier (Shirokov 62), Sirl, Zyryanov, Danny, Denisov, Tymoschuk, Pogrebnyak, Dominguez (Arshavin 46). Subs not used: Contofalsky, Kim, Tekke, Faitzulin.

#2 - That's right mate. After thousands of Gers fans wrecked Manchester and tried to kill a few cops, I am sure that the Mancunians will watch your videos and be quaking in their boots at the thought of 20,000 Celtic fans singing at them.

Idiot.

6 CF - 200 arrests out of half a million supporters in Manchester was manna from heaven for you wans't it? Made everyone forget the one ned that ran on to the pitch v Milan.
I'm sure the travelling Oirish minstrels will do their upmost to behave impeccably while in Manchester for the away game - but be careful. Celtic are one outburst away from being tarred with the same brush.

Think it won't happen?

Ha ha...etc.

Admit your shame fayneant, it is the start of the healing process. Then when you are recovering, go and watch the famous Glasgow Celtic...you will find that all is good in the world again.

No matter how many times you and your fellow filth try and convince the world that we are as bad as you lot, only your own moronic fan base will buy it.

Rangers FC...Scotlands shame

It was only 0.0001 percent of rangers fans who were trying to kick that policeman to death, the rest were just good naturedly smashing the city up.

Still all this pails into insignificance when compared with that Celtic fan who tickled Dida under the chin in the Milan game!

#7 "I'm sure the travelling Oirish minstrels will do their upmost to behave impeccably while in Manchester..."

I'm sure they'll make it their MISSION to do just that!

Celtic fans will be desperate to show that they are NOT the same, and to have neutral observers draw that conclusion.

Nothing will do more to heap further embarrassment on "Ra Peepull" than thousands of Celtic fans behaving themselves impeccably in Manchester...

It’s hard to believe Alex Ferguson has still to eclipse his achievement of winning the European Super cup with Aberdeen. Maybe next year….

As a Scotsman, I should be disappointed another Scottish Club has not been able to equal Aberdeen’s record of winning two European trophies. I was when Celtic lost in Seville. However, I don’t think Rangers should have been allowed another chance of disgracing the country again in Europe. A sigh of relieve went round Scotland when they got knocked out last month I hear.

I felt so embarrassed after the UEFA Cup Riots, I have not stopped giving my apologies to people I meet from Manchester. I wonder if Murray felt obligated to apologize to that Policeman his fans nearly killed? The excuse these thugs were not “real Rangers fans” but morons from Northern Ireland did not wash with me because that is where the majority of Rangers fan’s parents and grand parents come from. It is not surprising Murray’s family wants him to sell the Club.

Richardinho,

I expect Celtic fans to behave themselves in Manchester because they normally do when they go abroad.
Rangers on the other hand have a shameful history of rioting and trying (and succeeding) to kill foreign policemen.

15 - Dickinho - England is 'abroad' now, is it?

I've witnessed the wandering minstrels of the East End on their travels many times in Scotland - they also have their followers who can behave in the most disgraceful and feral manner.

#15 England is a separate country from Scotland, yes idiot.
Every club has trouble makers, but some clubs like Celtic have a culture which discourages such behaviour, whilst others, like Rangers or Millwall, have a 'no-one likes us we don't care' attitude which positively glorifies in it.
The fact that some of your fellow travellers are making comparisons between the riots in and Manchester and the Dida incident pretty much illustrates the difference.

19 - oooooh saucer of milk for Boyne Bhoy...;-)

Dick - I am not making a comparison between the 2 incidents - but you will recall the grief that Celtic took for the actions of one drunk eejit.

You can't tar us all with the same brush

Great opportunity for witty headlines gone.

#18 "England is a separate country from Scotland, yes idiot."

Well, in one sense yes it is, and in another sense, no it's not.

They are separate nations but both are part of a unitary state.

Fayneant's original point was that England is not "abroad".

As England is part of a unitary state which includes Scotland, it's difficult to disagree with him, surely?

Fayneant,

You seem like a well educated person for someone for your disposition so please do not use you Glaswegian friends as an excuse for your fans behaviour. I urge you to speak amongst yourselves on your websites, at your lodges and when you go to Ibrox; ask, is not time to join the rest of the Civilized World; try and raise the ethos of what your club is about.

After Manchester, the moment is here for a change- do not waste it. I believe Rangers fans, like you, who have had the advantage of a good schooling, should say enough is enough. Please lead the way…

People in Scotland do not want to see another Barcelona or Manchester fiasco. We are sick of it.

I think the reaction of Greater Manchester Police and Manchester City Council says enough about what will happen. As always, they are pretty welcoming to Celtic, as they were last time we went on CL duty, and when we took 30000 down for Keanes testimonial and numerous other friendlies.

For whatever reason, they have not been as warm towards your lot. Be it cancelling the friendly with Bolton, or asking you not to turn up in May(And with the gift of hindsight they will probably say they were correct). They don't like you(Hey, who does! These days a lot of your own fans don't even like you) but they know that Celtic fans, particularly in light of what happened in May, will pose little or no problem at all to the many good and not so good folk of Manchester.

As usual you exagerate.

I look forward to hearing the craic from the bhoys as they sing of their hero's the provos who blew up Manchesters Arndale Centre in 1996 injuring over 200 innocent people.

Take a tip Dick, we know what your lot are like.

Jeez, I make one comment about not feeling so bad about losing to Zenit after they pump Man Utd and the Roighteous Brothers of the Downtrodden Freedom Fighters are on here in force talking about dead policemen, riots, filth and how England is now 'abroad'.

I was talking about the game, bhoys! Lighten up ffs!
