SCOTLAND manager George Burley has welcomed Barry Ferguson back to his team as captain for tomorrow's friendly against Argentina at Hampden, but sounded a note of caution on the midfielder's fitness.
Ferguson, 30, has not played for his country for a year – when he scored in the defeat by Italy that ended Scotland's Euro 2008 hopes – and has yet to feature under Burley.

He has played two full games for Rangers since returning from summer ankle surgery and will start at the national stadium as Diego Maradona takes charge of Argentina for the first time.

Burley, hit by six unavailability's for the match, is glad to get his first look at the Ibrox captain under his tutelage – although he has declined to confirm how long he expects Ferguson to play.

He said: "Barry is going to start, and we will have a look at it.

"He's back from a long-term injury and he has played two 90 minutes for Rangers.

"It's good to have him back, and we are pleased he is fit again. But we will see how it goes."

Ferguson admits he had one eye on the Argentina game while he was returning to fitness.

He said: "It's obviously a game that everyone in the squad, not just myself, is desperate to play in.

"Argentina are one of the best teams about and have some fantastic players.

"When I found out we were going to be playing them, it was one of the games I was desperate to get back and get involved in – and thankfully my rehab has gone well."

Ferguson also missed friendlies against Croatia and the Czech Republic last season because of ankle problems before going under the surgeon's knife in July.

Rangers manager Walter Smith said last Tuesday that he felt Ferguson was not ready to play a full game. However, he lasted 90 minutes in the his first start of the season against Motherwell the following day and played another full game on Saturday against St Mirren.

Smith added last week: "We've got two games before the Scotland game and so he's ready to start a game for us. But whether he's ready to start against Argentina is another thing.

"It's up to George but it's natural that if someone has been out for five months, then they can't just come back and play a full 90 minutes, and then another 90 minutes and then another 90 minutes after that."

Yup!! Baz can pass the ball sideways better than anyone else i`ve seen.

OVER RATED beyond belief, was found out down south and has found his level in a poor SPL.

Found out as in after 3 games to settle, picked up man of the match award in the next 3 then got injured?
Yes, truly overrated! Thats why newcastle were looking to take him from rovers before his injury(remember they were still a good side then)?

Surprised he wants to play really. He normally picks and chooses his games depending on whether he has a big game on the weekend or not. Remind me who Rangers have on Sunday?

#5 - yeah right. just like Tugay? He got injured, out for a while, head wasnt right, came back home, should never have left and admits it, personally I think he only went to level some debt, much like Hutton, I dont think the player wanted to go. I also dont think he was found out, certainly everyone in the premiership thought he was finding his feet and showing his class before the injury but then being a HIVee fan, you are far better placed to comment than professional footballers.

#6 - Aberdeen I think.

Ferguson was the top scoring midfielder in the SPL for 2 years running, as for the shrinking allegation, never seen that one, I have seen Lennon grab the attention for his Implosion in several OF games though, as for lambert, decent player but one was ending their career as another was starting it, and again, fergie done all right.

Burley is an absolute idiot.

Ferguson has played a couple of games and gets straight back into the line up. The old OF factor.

Players are dropping like flies he calls up Scott Robertson and Lee Miller.

What about Riorden, proven goalscorer scoring goals and playing well at Hibs.

The Riot Survivor.

It'll depend on which one Barry Squarebaw agrees to. The first consideration is that the new man allows the Christmas Party and the drinking culture to continue. As a matter of interest I wonder where Rangers would be in the league today had Murray had the guts to stand up to Backpass and keep Paul Le Guen. I would hazard a guess that they would on top and still in Europe.

Walter's successor will need to be willing to take on a team that's failed to win a title 4 years on the trot, is £30 odd million in debt and has no money for new signings.

He'll be competing against a manager that's won 4 titles on the trot, gets a steady £7-£8m to invest each season and leads a club with virtually no debt.

BEMUSED EXILE,

It's a sad reflection on the standing of International football in our little country that a midweek friendly against such glamorous opponents, and reasonably priced tickets, still can't combine to produce a crowd of over 40,000 at our National stadium.

It seems to me that the negative attitude that emanates our two biggest clubs has a large part to play in this deterioration. The money available from the Champions League makes this tournament much more important in the eyes of CFC and RFC than the concerns of our country, and given that the winning of the SPL is a virtual pre-requisite to CL participation, even a run-of-the-mill league game has become a bigger deal than a fixture involving our National team.

"Team Scotland" has become marginalised by the financial need/greed of our country's biggest clubs, and I wonder if it's a coincidence that we've failed to qualify for a major final ever since Celtic re-emerged as a credible rival to Rangers, and the big two started caring more about their private contest than about the health of our national game.

Burley may be daft, but he knows enough about the game to realise that the Agrentinians don't like dealing with they passes that rip defences apart.

Ferguson's eye for the angled pass with just enough pace on it makes him the obvious starter.

Fancy him to sell a few dummies as well.

A well crafted response was in the making until you let yourself down with the following:
