Harrington Open for some credit
PERHAPS Padraig Harrington will finally get some recognition in America following his thrilling victory in the US PGA championship in the early hours of yesterday morning. Although, judging by the way he has been introduced to the galleries Stateside
over the past few weeks, you wouldn't bet on it.

The starters in America just don't seem to want to make mention of the Irishman's Open championship victories.

At last year's WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio, Harrington, fresh from his victory at Carnoustie, admitted he was a little miffed that the starter on the first tee did not introduce him as the 'Open champion'.

And the same happened again this year. Harrington had just claimed back-to-back Open titles at Royal Birkdale, but still Ohio officials just said: "On the tee, from Ireland, Padraig Harrington."

At the US PGA over the weekend, Phil Mickelson was proudly introduced as the "2005 US PGA champion" but Harrington was, you guessed it, plain old "Padraig Harrington". Given he went on to win the tournament, maybe America will give Harrington the recognition he deserves.

Dazed Cowan goes Abba daft

DUNDEE defender David Cowan has recovered from the head knock he took against Clyde at the weekend, but the damage has been done: he has been outed as an Abba fan.

The dazed centre-half was taken off early in the first half blurting out the words to Abba's Dancing Queen, featured in the hit film Mamma Mia! "David took a sore one and was all over the place," revealed skipper Paul McHale. "He was feeling sick, and as he was walking off he was singing Abba songs. I'm not sure if he's been to the pictures this week."

Who has Vlad's mobile number?

HEARTS may have got off to a winning start on Saturday, but for some supporters a win over Motherwell is only a short-term fix.

Take the fan of many years standing who contacted The Scotsman yesterday. "Could you give me a number for Hearts?" asked the caller, who explained that there are questions that need to be answered. "Sure," we replied. "Who is it you are trying to contact?"

"I'd like to speak to the boss man, Mr Romanov," he said, and he wasn't joking.

If only it was that easy.

TALES FROM THE TABS

NOVO GOING NOWHERE

NACHO Novo says in the Daily Mail that he will not be tempted by a move to the glamour of the Barclays Premier League. Maybe it's something to do with the fact that it is newly-promoted Hull City who are rumoured to be preparing a bid for the Rangers forward, and not Chelsea or champions Manchester United.

"I am happy here. I love the fans and that is a big thing for me," says Novo. "If the fans were against me, that would be different."

The Daily Express goes further. In addition to linking Novo with Hull, they say that key defender Carlos Cuellar is on the wanted list of another promoted Premier League team, Stoke City, while German teams Bayer Leverkusen and Cologne are linked with misfit Rangers striker Kris Boyd.

An exclusive in the same paper says that St Mirren are about to splash out, for them, the sizeable sum of £100,000 for Livingston captain James McPake.

Scottish Premier League rivals Motherwell are also reported to have their eye on the player.

Rearrangerz fanz are being heaped mounds more cow dung in their faces with this announcement.
An announcement that Rearrangerz fanz delegates were promised, assured and guaranteed only 3 DAYS AGO would NEVER happen.

We are not only talkin home based rearrangerz fanz.
We are talkin of delegates who flew in for that Friday afternoon meeting at Murray Park from ALL OVER the globe.

Jim Templeton of the Rearrangerz Supporters assembly and David Edgar of the Rearrangerz Supporters Trust both gave seperate media interviews and announcements stating that they had received the assurances that the meeting was mainly set up to resolve.

Cuellar and McGregor were going nowhere !!

They needed to strengthen their team, not continue to undermine and weaken it.

Yes,"Walter",Bain and Sir Stillwantsaway listened to the Rearrangerz fanz 15 man delegation.
Then proceded to ignore them......and acted as though that meeting had never taken place.

Only Rearrangerz fanz can determine if they are willing to be continue to be led by their (blue)nose.

Sad.

NO comments as yet on the 'Novo to Hull' story.

It should be noted that Hull are also eyeing Claudio Pizarro as well - as reported in this paper y'day.

The same Pizarro who was named in dispatches around the time Rangers signed Cousin last season - and who was widely described as too good for the SPL.

The fact he is now relegated to courting Hull - after only one season in the EPL - only serves to highlight the obscene amount of money being wasted on overactive underachievers in the English game

What a merry dance the rearrangerz fans have been led.

On Friday, looks like they took a break from the negotiations with Villa to attend a meeting with the fans and give assurance that Carlos wiz goin' naewhere.

You could not make it up....and I've yet to see one 'journalist' even pass remark about it.

There is something very fishy going on. We are told that Carlos knocked back a new deal a week ago.
Carlos says that he knocked the deal back because he wanted to play in the premiership...but on Friday afternoon, the rearrangerz fans were assured that Carlos was going nowhere.

Somebody's talking through their 3rse....in fact, I think they're all talkin' through their 3rses ...they've put their heads together and invented a big coc 'n' bull story knowing that minty's poodles won't be asking any awkward questions.

Thats simply not true.

How much of a mug does the Daily Rearranger take the Ibrox fanz to be.

Its a well known fact that Rearrangerz being booted out of ALL European competition by the minnows from Kaunus meant an automatic £10 million loss from UEFA.
£2.2 million(that now goes to Champions Celtics biscuit tin)TV money and something like £6 million gate money for their 4 home ties.

Thats a grand total of roughly £18.2 million !!

Rearrangerz sold the jerseys(Cuellars) for £7.8 million.

A group of Scotland's Shame attacked some Celtic players and you think it a cause for celebration ?

O'Dea is reported to have been arrested and removed in hand cuffs....normally, that would mean a night in the cells and appearance in court the next day.

Instead, O'Dea is released within THREE HOURS and given the OFFER of a fixed penalty which he will have 28 days to accept.

It is false, as the daily rearranger has reported, to say that he has been 'fined for breach of the peace'.

It is quite extraordinary for the plod to make such a hasty decision to issue the offer of a fixed penalty , a decision which requires the approval of the procurator fiscal.

The decision to release O'Dea would have required approval at a very senior level, and if they had a case against him, I doubt that they would have released him at all.

We shall have to wait and see if O'dea accepts the offer.

Looks llke the plod turned up, saw a disturbance, and indiscriminately started collaring anyone that appeared to be involved.

They've then started taking statements and a picture has emerged that their first impression of O'Dea's culpability was off the mark.

Realising their mistake, and aware off the likely damages claim that they (the tax payer) will be looking at, they've got Darren oot the door toute de suite, but in a bid to get themselves off the hook, they've given him a fixed penalty.

They'll be hoping Darren just accepts it which will get the plod off the hook IF the arrest was doubtfully valid.

I think you're looking too deeply into this , in a quite psychotic sounding way.

The facts appear to be quite straightforward : A group of Scotland's Shame thugs launched a violent attack on some Celtic players outside a night club.

They've ben droning on about it since Sunday, never acknowledging or even mentioning the earlier penalty claim when the st mirren goalie put Jan up in the air.

Some laptoployalists have grudgingly given some bat squeak of acknowledgement, probably because the report on bbc news highlighted the 'stonewall' nature of the earlier penalty claim...it sort of tied their hands.

Jim Templeton of the Judean Wearra Peepelz' Front is quoted in the evening times today as saying there was 'no mention' at Friday's meeting of a buy out clause in Cuellar's contract.

He recalls that Minty assured them that Carlos would only go if an offer of "silly money" came in for him.

Not a word of a buy out clause, that if a 10m euro offer came in, he'd have to go.

Strange that Minty didn't mention that. Stranger still that on Friday afternoon, The Evening Times was already running the story that Martin O'Neil was preparing a bid....The Evening Times went to press with that story at around 11a.m. on Friday, several hours before Minty's meeting.

Also strange is that Aston Villa would have needed Minty's permission to speak to the player, and it's not easy to see how that fits in with the story.

The suspicion that hung over Cuellar's absence from the Kaunas match has grown arms and legs , and a bit more besides.

#32 Pasq - I've said this before and probably will again. When SDM was THE man in Scottish basketball, he flng money at his MIM side in an effort to win respectin Europe.

Once he had it, just when he bought Rangers, he realised he could take his club no further and walked.

MIM became Livingston Bull, a collection of has beens, never will bes and OK a couple of class acts. They were still good enough to dominate Scotland though.

Doesn't that description resemble the current Rangers side, which, unlkie MIM/Bulls DOES have competition in Scotland.

Rangers are skint and when you're skint you do two things - you get rid of the dead wood and you make the guys who are left work twice as hard. This means your coaches earn their corn - I don't think WS and AMcC are good coaches, Kenny McDowall is however. That said, will the likes of Broadfoot, Whittaker, Adam, Thomson and Boyd put in the necessary work?

You certainly don't give big-money contracts (with or without buy-out clauses) to mercenary foreigners.

All Gers supporters would have wanted Cuellar to stay this season.

RFC have made a 5.5mil profit on a player in 14months, with that money my hope is that a couple of decent players can be brought in to improve the quality of our midfield, which any football supporter can see needs done badly.

The new centre half had a decent debut last Saturday so lets wait and see what the future holds. So there is a bit of cover for Carlos leaving and the chance to strengthen your squad by bringing in new players.

Its called doing business.

This is after all the SPL we compete in and the defending champions did not look like like world beaters taking 3 points from the Saints on Sunday.

As for the the bit of trouble outside a club involving a couple of players, let the police decide what happened when all the facts are known to the police.

So you believe Minty's assurance that the money for Cuellar will ALL be reinvested in the squad ?

After Minty's machavalian assurances at Friday's afternoon conference, his forgetting to mention the buy-out clause, isn't there cause to doubt the reported assurance that all the take on Cuellar will go to Walter ?

I would be very cautious about believing anything Minty says, or what is more usually the case, what he is reported to have said as these days he rarely speaks, if ever, to the media directly.

Darrel King in today's Evening Times is in bullish form, ignoring the fact that the story presented to the public about Cuellar's transfer stinks to high heaven.

Brainwashed Celtic fans ? You're 'avin' a larf with that...it seems that Minty can dish up any old cobblers knowing that the laptoployalists won't ask any awkward questions AND that the rearrangerz fans will swallow any old codswallop rather than rock the boat.

If it were, there would be a new midfield duo, another centre half and an out and out goal scorer in your ranks today and Cuellar would be strolling down Sauchiehall St this afternoon...

As for your title aspirations,It's ok to dream but the small matter of three consecutive league flags gives you all the information you need to come to the conclusion that the Champions are not going to relinquish our crown easily...

If it's true that he was liberated within three hours with a fixed penalty, that smells strongly of erroneous arrest....in fact it pongs!
The size of the damages claim goes north by the minute.

They could only reach the decision to liberate with a fixed penalty after evaluating ALL of the evidence.
The police would never take that step until ALL of the key witnesses have been spoken to.

Brian why tell the fans that Cuellar would go only if an offer of silly money comes in ?

Doesn't that give the impression that Rangers had some discretion about the matter ?

Doesn't that give the impression that Rangers would judge for themselves whether or not to accept an offer ?

Wasn't that a false impression ?
They could have asked Cuellar's permission to disclose the buy out clause before the meeting.
I don't see Cuellar would have had cause to object, particularly as it was by then pretty clear that he was going.

Why did minty not want to say at the meeting that there was a buy out clause ?
This happened before with Cousin although in that case Bain actually publicly denied the existence of a buy out clause, earning himself the nickname 'bainochio' in the process.

Celtic sign Crosas, and it's all made public. Barca have a preemption right, which if they do not exercise will still leave them a 25% share in any sell on fee.

What is the big deal about telling the fans the truth ?

Why conceal the buy out clause when you know it's all coming out in the wash anyway ?

Why leave the esteemed Mr Templeton feeling as though he and others were treated somewhat contemptuously ?

Even if Walter gets all the Cuellar money, and that's a big if (stand by for some 'rangers outbid by premiership giants' stories) , it's not a hell of a lot to find a replacement centre half and a couple of creative midfielders.

But then I think rangers need two full backs as well.

If rangers were to sign two good full backs, two creative midfielders and a good centre half, AND Celtic were to make no further signings, the title would be in the balance, but even then, I don't see much quality amongst Rangers' army of strikers.

Mabey with the signing I've suggested the strikers wouldn't need to be that good however.

Can you get all of that for £10m ?

That's assuming there's a bit left in the kitty to top up the Cuellar money.

Hinkel is on shaky ground and I'm beginning to think we've seen the best of him, which isn't a helluva lot.

I had big hopes for him this season, but he failed to impress me in the pre-season friendlies and Sunday's showing wasn't any better.

The time is coming for Caddis to claim his jersey if he doesn't start putting in a performance PDQ.

Thanks for you're concern, but we shall have to wait and see what happens in the next couple of weeks.

As far as RFC having to sign 5 players to compete with the tic I think you maybe over the top with that.

A poor RFC took you to the last day of the season last year before you won the title.

What does that say about the tics squad?

With a couple of quality addition to midfield, our new centre half, players returning who are at present injured, I look forward to another close title race, without the distraction of European football this season it could help the Gers.

Cuellar is hurting after being bundled into that van to the tune of a reported 40k a week from Villa.

We should all be so mistreated.

Breaking News...

General George Carpets,a major floor covering retailer in Glasgow, reports a huge upturn in business, defying the credit crunch warnings from major financial institutions..

Mr Axminster,Managing Director of the Maryhill based firm said today that securing a contract with Glasgow Rangers for carpets had meant that overtime was available everytime RFC held a press conference to state that there would be no sale of the clubs most precious assets.Next day I'd be contacted for the sale of a 7X6 rug to be delivered to Ibrox.

Mr Wilton,Sales Director, was delighted to report that the sight of his carpet being bundled out of the front door at Ibrox gave his company worldwide exposure but couldnt comment on the unsightly trainers at one end of the carpet or the unruly mop of curly hair at the other end...

And if Davy Provan says it, it must be true.

The Champions failed to shine on Sunday.

However, they nevertheless dominated the match from beginning to end whereas Falkirk passed rearrangerz off the park.

Higdon missed a great chance to score in the first half, and followed that up by missing a penalty in the second.

Throughout the match, rearrangerz huffed and puffed as Falkirk slickly passed the ball around.

Champions Celtic put on a poor performance , but probably had around 75% of the possession however ineffective that possession was.

Let's face it, rearrangerz came within a whisker of defeat which would have brought the roof in on Walter's stewardship of the club...quite simply, the rearrangerz fanz would have been in open revolt had Falkirk won that match, and to then find out that Cuellar had been pawned would have provoked levels of raging ranger syndrome not seen since mo johnston signed.

Walter has spent around £22m since he came back...and from Hutton and Cuellar alone has brought in £17.5m.

Didn't Walter pick up £1m for someone else ?

Even if not, that's still only about £4.5m that's been available for reinvestment in the squad since Walter's return.

I don't think Celtic's net spend figure over the same period is any better, and in fact it's possibly a bit worse.

But on these figures, it's clear that neither Celtic nor Rangers can compete even with the english championship any more.

There was a story on e-tims earlier in the summer that the english championship would allow Celtic to join provided they agreed to remain in the league for 5 years after admission even were they to bechampions 4 times in a row.

The rumour is that Celtic were unhappy about such a prolonged absence from European football, but the way things are going, I think Celtic should grab the deal because on the trajectory which we are on, it's only a matter of time before we're lagging behind the next rung of english football.

If offered such a deal the OF should jump at it, even the TV money from the Championship may help off set CL lost revenue.

3 years would be ideal, then after that they could qualify for entry in the EPL by gaining promotion.

Championship clubs would love their home gate revenue from playing Celtic or Rangers, and the OF firm support would get to see clubs only 2 a year in the league instead of 4 times a year.

Good idea (POST 79) Patrick but will we ever see it. I have my doubts unless the TV boys really push it.

Brian,

At the moment, Celtic are , by a country mile, financially stronger than at any other time in the club's history.

We could take a hit just now. Even if it was to set us back £30m in lost revenue over the 5 year period, we
could take it.

We will be able to attract better players, and after 5 years of pain, we'd be ready for a crack at the big time.
If the story is true, I would be very disappointed should Celtic refuse. We need to grow as a club and we've gone as far as we can in Scotland.
We must get out, and if it means a bit of pain for a few years, it
