Rumours of a love match persist
ANA Ivanovic was still beaming about her first win of the 2009 season yesterday when she was quizzed about the men's match that followed her at the Brisbane International in Australia.

Rumours of a love match between her and Fernando Verdasco sta
rted when the 24-year-old Spanish star joined Ivanovic's entourage to watch her matches and practice at the end of last season.

Both have said they're friends, but have not elaborated much beyond that.

They were playing back-to-back night matches yesterday at the Pat Rafter Arena, with top-seeded Ivanovic beating Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-2 to open her season in the first night match.

Third-seeded Verdasco beat local wild-card entry Bernard Tomic with the same scoreline in the subsequent match.

At a news conference under the arena while Verdasco was on court, Ivanovic was asked if she planned to go back and watch Verdasco's match: "I have a couple more things I have to do. Afterwards, maybe. But also, it's a late night so I have to do some recovery – and tennis comes first."

Espanyol fan a pain in the neck

ESPANYOL'S Carlos Kameni doesn't take too kindly to criticism. The goalkeeper had to be separated from a fan during training yesterday after the supporter told him not to bother renewing his contract with the club.

The 24-year-old, who was at fault for Athletic Bilbao's equaliser in Espanyol's 1-1 draw on Sunday and whose deal expires at the end of the season, grabbed the fan by the scruff of the neck before team-mates pulled him away.

"I would have probably done the same," said Espanyol defender Sergio Sanchez.

Setanta Sports are on the ball

SPL managers will have been quaking in their boots if they tuned into Setanta's coverage of last night's FA Cup match between Blyth Spartans and Blackburn Rovers.

Getting right to the very heart of the action, Setanta had a roving reporter and a cameraman down at the dugout to quiz the managers while play raged on. So, you had Sam Allardyce with one eye on the game and one eye on his interviewer as his team struggled to break down a side from the Blue Square North.

Let's hope Setanta start this with their SPL coverage...

TALES FROM THE TABS

MURDO'S RECORD RANT

CELTIC legend Murdo MacLeod was left to bemoan the comparison made by Gordon Strachan after the Parkhead manager explained the absence of Aiden McGeady from the squad to face Dundee United on Saturday by pointing out that Massimo Donati, below, was not included either. "Come on, Gordon. Nobody is buying that one and you know it," MacLeod told the Daily Record.

Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole is set for "clear-the-air talks" with manager Luiz Felipe Scolari after the player was substituted during the FA Cup draw with Southend on Saturday, according to the Daily Express. Cole was taken off for the 13th game in succession and headed straight down the tunnel before Chelsea squandered their lead in the closing minutes. A source said: "Joe was not happy. He wants a chat with the manager to see where he stands."

The same paper reports that Manchester City manager Mark Hughes is poised to increase his bid for West Ham striker Craig Bellamy.

Funny how we have Glen Gibbons telling us that Scott Brown is now some sort of class act and that he is now worth a £9m bid fae Pompey! Portsmouth are skint for a start and are off loading players before they go tae the wall and are not in the market for players in that bracket ... and secondly ... Scott Brown is a headless chicken that runs around and clatters players but gives nothing else ... he doesnt score and his passing is poor! £9M ... your having a laugh? Is Gibbons another one of Lawell`s puppies?

Strange how much you know about Portsmouths finances....yet when the dire financial situation at the death star is discussed on these threads....you suddenly become a pantomime participant with....

..."oh no it's not"...

You're an apprentice halfwit....who is obsessed with Celtic.....

Ps..Portsmouth just sold Defoe for £15m...that could buy your entire squad!

Paulmac2,

Gow.....six figure sum....that will be £66.66 plus vat then!

The question still remains....will any Rangers player attract a £250k offer or above?

Meanwhile....the Celtic reserves keep on rolling....

And once again....Gordon sticks to the laptop loyals....well done weee man!

As good as Scott Brown is, there's no way a bid like that (if there is any truth in it) should be turned down. With that kind of money there are plenty of clubs who are struggling financially and have players that would be worth looking at (southampton for example) that could be as good as if not better then scott brown.

Portsmouth are selling off their assets as they are in trouble financially and they are not in the market for a £10m player ... never mind O`Broon ... he cant pass the ball and he cant score and is worth £1m tops and there is no offer or deal or sale and that includes West Ham who are also in financial trouble and owned by the Icelandic guy that has just gone bust ... it`s pure spin by the pro - Celtic media tae give a false economy tae the mugs that follow them ... lies, lies and damn lies ... only a half wit would believe them!

That will be the same Scott Broon that had your midfield clueless 10 days ago....

Portsmouth have sold Diarra and Defoe for around £35 million all in. Crouch may be next for around £10 million. They have money and a deal for Brown makes sense, particularly given the sale of Diarra(Sell 1 player for £20m bring in a player thats as good for half the money). Brown may be far from the finished article but as a defense midfielder he has potential to be world class. Very similar type of player to Gattuso, in that he can choke(and kick) the life out of anyone on his day. Ask Senna from Villareal if he'd like to face him again, or the entire Rangers midfield after last week.

From what I read a short while ago the owner of Portsmouth is desperate to sell the club, but before a buyer can be found the present owner must reduce the massive debt the club has accumulated since coming into the EPL. The other clubs reported to be in major financial trouble are WHU, Wigan.

I expect Pompey to bring in the money in January, hope for a couple of loan players to come in, and just try to survive this season in the EPL.
39

Paulmac2,

surrey 06/01/2009 16:08:21
I don't think fans fully understand the brutal depth of the financial problems a number of EPL clubs face under the growing global economic situation....

Not only are the banks calling in monies...sponsors are looking to trim back...

Can you imagine if Sky also decided to reduce it's financial commitment or worse...pull out of the EPL?

Chaos would follow....

It is no coincidence that Rangers are having to ship out the numbers discussed last week by Wattie....

This situation has a lot of mileage left in it yet!

I read a report the other day on the credit ratings of all the EPL clubs....

Half of them are trading....whilst insolvent!
42

Daillyman,

06/01/2009 16:59:34
Said in an earlier post that the EPL bubble may burst.

They may look at a salary cap issue for teams to control wage costs, a % of revenue to pay wages.

If clubs go over that cap financial penalties are issued. It seems to have worked with the American NFL league where rosters are about 45-50 players and they all work under the same wage cap. The TV money each team receives I think exceeds what EPL clubs get from Sky, it has allowed parity into the league with a great emphasis placed on scouting free agents and university graduates.
43

Paulmac2,

surrey 06/01/2009 17:09:28
Common sense is not something the European union is blessed with Brian....

The problem is....capping is against employment law in Europe and as such would be challenged at the first opportunity in Brussels....

Capping is indeed the most obvious and sensible way forward....but then you run the risk of brown paper bags in players shows after games....which used to happen in the 50's and 60's until player salary capping was removed!
44

Daillyman,

06/01/2009 17:17:40
Paul in the older days the players union had no power, its was a time for owners to pull in the money.

In today's game with the power of the players union an agreement could be reached between the owners and players union on some form of cap. If it were a legal deal the European union would have very little to say.

There are union contracts agreed to every day between employers and workers.

It does not take a blind man to see that there will be major problems ahead in the next few seasons and that top flight clubs and their future will be put in peril, if cost are not controlled.

No brave face at all. Being a realist, RFC at this juncture in their history are in position where money is very tight. We have become a selling club since SDM allowed Advocat to mortgage the future financial well being of the club for a European dream that was always doomed to failure.

Last season WS took the side to a European final with 1/10th money that the little general spent.

I have no problem with my club making 10 times what they paid for a player, what I would like to see is the powers at be @Ibrox come out with a business plan that can move the club away from constantly being in debt, and also a plan for the team on the park.

Why would it matter to Celtic supporters if Boyd goes, all we read is how pesh you all say he is.

If he goes the league is still far from over.

Lafferty to bag 12 goals the 2nd half of the season.lol

Pundit we are not going to pay the wages Faubert would demand, and he is in all honesty not a player I would want at Ibrox.

Healy I would love to see him at Ibrox, a strong striker with good movement of the ball.

His best position is the right side of midfield, we have Davis to do that job,, it is time WS brings in players for specific areas on the park,,, we are crying for a decent left sided midfield player.

If he frees up wages by unloading dead wood, address the needs on the park, a centre half, and left sided midfield player, bring in Healy and we will be fine.
53

Daillyman,

06/01/2009 19:57:44
Healy was brought to Fulham by Sanchez, when he was let go, he sat on the touchline, has only featured 4 times this season. Played 70 times internationally for his country and scored 35 times.

He would score in the SPL.

I think that everyone is always for sale at a club like Rangers. Every player has his price and if a potential buyer is prepared to meet or even exceed that valuation then business can be done. The big difference at the moment is that Rangers well-publicised debt has alerted other clubs to the notion that players can be picked up at a bargain price, so a few vultures appear to be circling.

Having said all that, I'm disappointed at the rumoured sale of Kris Boyd, a striker who has scored nearly 100 goals in three years as a Rangers player, and who has the potential to end up as one of the top scorers in Scottish footballing history. With Darchville and Cousin gone, and both Novo and Velicka rumoured to be on the way out, WS could be on the verge of turning an over-abundance of front men into a shortage of strike options.

For me, Boyd is one of about ten players in the RFC first team squad who should not be allowed to leave under any circumstances. There is an SPL title still within our grasp, no matter how much the other side like to taunt us that it's over. It would be a dereliction of duty for SDM or WS to sanction the sale of the players who can still lead us to domestic glory this season.

Keep the faith.

every player has his price but your popst really ignores the truely difficult finnancial situation rangers are in..murray has enough clout with 80% of the media to try and keep things under control..but the facts are with the hbos takeover rangers account is being called to account..rangers spent money they never had when they lost cueller..mainly to appease the fans..thats caught up with them..sadly for rangers the default position of rangers fans as being loyal means the club think they can do as they will..i think by jan 31st 2009 the genie will be out of the bottle xxx

Good evening right back at you...

As an old timer, I'm "fortunate" enough to have lived through periods where Rangers weren't winning trophies and had no money to spend either, so my "default" position is certainly to be loyal to the club that I've supported for over 40 years. I've certainly never chased the club with the biggest pot of gold, although it was a happy coincidence that for many years in the nineties, it was RFC who had the big money.

So, while my loyalties to both SDM and/or WS could waver, Rangers Football Club will always have my guaranteed support.

For whatever reason "Walter" has included Boyd in his "Ibrox Ten" hitlist,it cannot be said that Boyd was a fringe player.

Yet "Walter" told his heaving, still believing(only just)Rearrangerz fanz only yesterday that he would only sanction the sale of those types of players.

As Peter Lawwell might have put it.........for whatever reason "Walter" has off loaded Boydthebench(pen),it can only be for reasons other than football.

Money makes success more likely, but it certainly doesn't come with any guarantees. It is a sad fact of life, however, that Celtic are likely to have the ability to outspend Rangers for quite a few years to come, so it will be a struggle for the blue half to regain the upper hand.

On the bright side, I've been quite surprised by the number of RFC posters on here lately who have seemed quite willing to endure a period of pain in return for giving the young talent emerging from Murray Park a chance, and I gladly include myself in that number. I saw an interesting article by Scotland youth "guru" Billy Stark last week where he was highlighting the most talented young teenagers in Scottish football, and singled out three young 'Gers, Wilson, Ness and Fleck for special praise.

As I've pointed out, my support is not at all conditional on my team being successful. My own dad, a life-long Falkirk fan, is my role-model in that respect!

He accepted that it too, could not have been done on footballing grounds.

Davie Provan is the first to go public and suggest that the Rearrangerz turmoil that faces them can only really be guessed at.

One things for sure.
Lloyds TSB takeover HBOS institutions with effect from 12/1/09.

They will not be guessing as to what Rearrangerz exact financial status is.

For what it is worth,Susan Rice,Chief of Lloyds TSB (Scotland) is of Irish/American descent.

Why,I dont think it can possibly make any sort of difference whatsoever.

But "Walter" might be able to help you out there.

He was infamously well known for dropping peoples names when he thought it would suit his cause.

Sad.
Isn`t it.

#126..no you're right ..rangers have sold hutton ..helped lose you the league..sold cueller..regarded as your best player...sold cousan..who won you the old firm game at parkhead..now you are willing to sell your top striker..and everyone else if possible..debt over 20 million BEFORE the credit crunch..a supportive bank taken over by a more heartless institution..but as you say everything is fine at ibrox xxx..

#134..some of the spending was done on the back of the fans "revolting" (no jokes please..) as was said a cueller "buy out clause" suddenly appeared and before you could say 4 in a row he was gone..the fans were unhappy and players were bought..no doudt for less than reported..2.5 for edu ???? etc etc..but if you think things are fine then thats ok..you do know celtic have been champions for 3 years..xxx

#145 if murray hadnt got your club into £80+ million debt and apologise for his foolishness then YOU might have had an argument d'oh

ps maybe it wasnt to "cheer up the fans .." maybe it was to feed his own ego...see you at the end of january...xxx
80

williwaw,

06/01/2009 23:40:22
So what has David Murrays achievemnets been in the last 20 year ?

He succeeded in renaming the club.

Rearrangerz F.C.

Thats about it.

Close the door on yer way oot.
81

sonofcosmos,

glasgow 06/01/2009 23:50:36
#150..and that was the watershed..murray as you say had to put 50million of his money into his debt..mainly due to the dreadfully small take up of shares by ordinary supporters..your club has never recovered from that and the credit crunch(or the take over of hbos) has been the final straw..dont think your club will die..just suffer like celtic did and you will look back at some of the worst players your club has ever had in your lifetime..as i say see you at the beginning of feb xxx
ps just a query pundit do you think all is well and the club are selling boyd because they want to ??
82

sonofcosmos,

glasgow 06/01/2009 23:59:23

#157 £3.5 million for boyd with 20% going to killie..good buisness pundit..or desperation ???
86

sonofcosmos,

glasgow 07/01/2009 00:14:11
to be fair the scotsman is notquite as funny as wednesdays herald.."Rangers and Celtic face team exodus" ?? "Rangers prepare to cash in on Boyd" although one interesting comment is made..."the club in their current financial peril " if only the media had challenged sir dave months ago..xxx
87

sonofcosmos,

glasgow 07/01/2009 00:17:26
although maybe too late the media worm has turned..
"There will be an attempt from management at Rangers to downplay the importance of losing their leading goalscorer while trailing in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League by five points. This is whistling in the dark. It will not fool anyone. There will be an agreed line for the press. Rangers may say they received a decent price. But Birmingham's offer values Boyd at about a quarter of a Defoe. Jermain travelled from Portsmouth to Spurs yesterday for £15m.

There will be spin and there will be statements, but Rangers' action shouts loudly: "We need money.

And we need it now."

The immediate reaction in the football world beyond Murray Park will be that Rangers are a selling club and no-one is out of bounds. Pedro Mendes for Spurs? Bazza for Newcastle? Allan McGregor for somewhere, anywhere?"
