HIBS fans can boast an impressive list of celebrity fans, and they are claiming a new recruit in Coronation's Street's corner-shop proprietor, Dev Alahan.
In the week leading up to the second Edinburgh derby in eight days, Hibs were given a timely
namecheck on the nation's oldest soap opera on Monday, when Edinburgh cropped up during a conversation in Weatherfield.
Dev, played by actor Jimmi Harkishin, piped up that he'd been to Edinburgh before and that as well as taking in the Castle, a friend had taken him to see "Hibernian and they lost to one of the Dundee teams". Dev blotted his copybook a little by claiming that he had been to Argyle Street in the capital, no doubt provoking a flood of complaints from Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The Corrie switchboards have been jammed before as a result of the show's increasing references to Scottish football. When resident bad guy Tony Gordon, played by Scots actor Scottish actor Gray O'Brien, had a pop at Rangers recently, saying, "I could no more be interested in Rosie Webster than I could support Glasgow Rangers", ITV reported dozens of complaints.
Hull in mad dash to get stripped FOR most football clubs, the January sales are all about trying to get in new players, but Hull City are busy shopping for new strips.
Hull must find a new kit for their FA Cup third-round replay at Newcastle next week as their black-and-amber first choice and grey away strips clash with the Magpies' black and white stripes. They had to borrow white shorts and socks from Newcastle when the teams last met at St James' Park in September. "We have got a massive problem – we don't have a third-choice strip," admitted manager Phil Brown.
Keeper Kameni calms downYESTERDAY we told you about Espanyol's Carlos Kameni grabbing a supporter by the scruff of the neck after the fan told the goalkeeper not to bother renewing his contract.
Today, inevitably, comes an apology from Kameni, who says he regrets his actions. "I know I should have ignored those words," said the 24-year-old. "I neither wanted, nor tried to, attack anyone or create any kind of problem with my behaviour but it was very hard for me to hear certain comments while I was training. I always give my all in training and matches."
TALES FROM THE TABS
MENDES FOR MAGPIES?JOE Kinnear was credited with an interest in Rangers captain Barry Ferguson only last week. According to the Mirror, the Newcastle United manager has now turned his attention towards another Ibrox midfielder – Pedro Mendes.
The paper claims Kinnear has asked to take the Portuguese on loan with a view to completing a £1.5 million transfer, but that Rangers want the cash to be paid up front.
The Sun reveals that Alex McLeish is prepared to pay £3 million to take Rangers striker Kris Boyd to Birmingham City. The same paper says Bolton Wanderers are interested in St Mirren midfielder Andy Dorman, while the Express reports that Motherwell have joined the list of clubs chasing Inverness midfielder Don Cowie.
Middlesbrough are chasing Celtic's Aiden McGeady, according to the Mail, while Chris Killen admits in the Record that he needs a fresh start. But after just one appearance this season, perhaps he should lower his expectations. "I would like to go back to the Premiership," he says.
