HEARTS' current financial problems could see their manager Csaba Laszlo lose out to city rivals Hibernian if he wishes to sign Kilmarnock goalkeeper Alan Combe.
Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies admitted for the first time yesterday that he could be forced to cash in on Combe in January if the goalkeeper decides to quit the club.

Combe is out of contract in the summer and has so far failed to agree a new
deal with the Rugby Park outfit.

He is free to talk to interested parties next month and reports strongly suggest that capital rivals Hearts and Hibs are both interested in the Edinburgh-born goalkeeper.

And Jefferies concedes Kilmarnock could sell him in the next transfer window rather than risk losing him for nothing. "It's news to me that Hearts and Hibs are interested," he said. "All I know is that the chairman has made Alan an offer and Alan knows it's up to him now. He has done well for us and is maybe waiting to see what's on offer.

"That's the world we live in and I've brought in players when they have been out of contract. If he does make the decision to go at the end of the season, it might be that he has to go quicker because we have to do what's best for Kilmarnock.

"If any club – whether that be Hearts, Hibs or anyone else – makes an offer and it's one that we feel is a good deal then it might be the same as what happened with Colin Nish last year.

"If it's easier to keep him and lose him for nothing at the end of the season, we will make that decision if and when Alan makes the decision to move on."

Kilmarnock are desperate to force their way into the reckoning for a top-six finish this season and Jefferies added: "Of course it would be a blow to lose him. He is our number one goalkeeper and he's done great for us. I might need to bring another keeper to the club to make up for the loss of Alan if he goes."

Jefferies is also working behind the scenes to recruit a striker who could solve his side's goalscoring problems, admitting their 1-0 defeat to Hamilton last week was down to an inability to put the ball in the net.

He said: "We need a bit of experience to come in and we've made moves but there is a long time to go between now and then and anything can happen. It looks like we'll have someone who is proven in the Premier League and we know he's got a goal or two in him."

However, the mystery player will not be Steven Naismith after Jefferies ruled out a return to Rugby Park.

I'd rather have a brush than a Combe.

strange story - why on earth would Hearts need another keeper? Unless Kello and Balogh will be sold/given back in January?

Hearts should sign Alan Rough - reflects the current state there.

Hearts are not interested in Combe - this is just someone at Killie trying to start a bidding war to cash in on him in Jan instead of losing him for nowt at the end of the season. Shameless. The only club interested in him is Hibs, and he's a Hibee.

He's a Hibee, he is no better than any of the current Hearts keepers - but miles better any of the Hibs keepers. Why would Hearts be interested in him - even if they did have the money?

I cannot believe that the Scotsman is stupid enough to print this garbage (sorry - yes I can) as everyone knows that we are NOT after another 'keeper. it was the same with Rear done - the selling club trying to make out that the buying club has a rival in bidding therefore putting the price up.
I hope FFFHibs don't fall for this guff and pay a "proper" price. Wouldn't bid them good will at the best of times but I cannot stick deceit.OR BU11SHIT like this article.
I also find it hard to believe some posters on here even remotely think that this piece has a semblance of reality to it (as far as Hearts is concerned)

best thing hibs could do in the TW would to buy Hearts' goalkeeping coach. Is that what Banks does now or do you have someone else working with your keepers?

I GREW UP WITH ALAN COMBE IN LEITH, AND THE ALAN COMBE I KNEW WAS A DYED IN THE WOOL JAMBO!

DONT KNOW IF THIS IS GLASGOW PRESS, BUT SICK OF READING THAT THE LAD'S A HIBBIE (UNLESS HE SWITCHED TEAMS IN HIS 20'S!)!

ALAN I PLAYED FOOTIE WITH RIGHT THROUGH TEENS ALWAYS HAD MAROON SCARF ROUND HIS NECK, AND THIS AT A TIME IN THE LATE 80'S WHEN NOBODY EVER WORE TEAM COLOURS.

15

Who?,

05/12/2008 10:15:16
So a club and a parent company that are supposidly skint, who can't pay their staff and are due to supposidly go bust are going to BUY their 3rd goalkeeper in 5 months?

Does the scotsman have an editor?

If so can he read?

I can hardly see how Hearts will sign Combe either.

Unless of course Kaunas sign him first...........

Hibs need more than a Combe to cover up their goalkeeping difficulties. I'll get my coat.

Yeah, he'd get his wages. But only if Hearts get at least six players off the wage bill first!

At last a positive from the financial crisis, which will be resolved in January with some high and some not so high earners sold with replacements already identified, of course depends if they dont mind being paid a week late!

Signing for Hearts these days could be a bit hairy.

Coombe should brush aside any such overtures from Tynecastle.

If I was him I'd sign for Mixu's mob.

He might be folicly challenged but didnt stop Hibs from giving CFC a right good wigging.
