WHEN Heart of Midlothian last won the Scottish Cup three years ago and split the Old Firm in the SPL, Andrew Driver was making his way in the game as a graduate of the club's academy.
Should the opportunity arise at Tynecastle next season to reprise that challenge at the summit of the domestic game then the winger is adamant he wants to play his part.

Although a number of clubs – including Coventry, Burnley and Rangers – have b
een credited with an interest in signing the winger this summer, Driver, who was promoting Hearts' season ticket launch, insists he doesn't want to miss out on the chance of being part of something big with the club he joined as a 16-year-old.

Asked what he made of speculation he could follow Christophe Berra, who signed for Wolves in January, and play for an English club next season, Driver replied: "It's something I don't like to think about because I'm happy where I am. I've signed a long contract and the way things are going here, (leaving] is something you wouldn't really want to do.

"You want to keep going for Hearts. It's not something I'll think about until the day Hearts come to me and say: 'We've accepted this bid, now you'll have to think about it.'

"There's no point in considering it before then. Getting into Europe is a massive incentive to stay and you don't want to think: 'If I leave am I going to miss out on something special here?'

"That's what you want to do, you want to challenge for trophies. It's a fantastic achievement to challenge the Old Firm and if the opportunity came along to do that again then it's something I'd really want to be involved with."

Blessed with pace and skill, the 21-year-old says the transformation in performance both individually and collectively at Hearts under the management of Csaba Laszlo is astonishing. Retaining the manager's services, as well as the bulk of the current squad scrapping for third place in the SPL, will be crucial to the team's development

"Last season was totally depressing from Christmas onwards. We underachieved massively as a team and personally I found it hard," he recalled.

"You just wanted to get it over and done with and get away. Whereas now you come into training and want to improve as a player, you want to gain that extra yard. You want to do all the extra things to be as good a player as you can be.

"We've made massive strides (as a football team] this season. If we'd talked about this a year ago at that time it was all doom and gloom and there didn't seem to be a way back from the position we were in, but, with the new manager coming in, that gave us an organisation and showed the team can compete at the top level.

"You've got to keep moving forward and getting to where we want to be this season means gaining enough points to finish in third place.

"I know everyone kept saying that the main objective was to reach the top six, but if we don't make it into the top three now, that will be a massive disappointment. Next season, when we hope to be in Europe, we would want to impress there.

"This is a generally young team which is sure to keep improving. If we can keep the manager and the personnel in the side then we will take more forward strides. The manager transformed us in the first two months, in our pre-season. This is a completely different team from the year before.

"But it's only now when we're fighting for third place that people are starting to notice the change. It will be massive for this club to keep the manager. He has put the base there and says himself when he comes in that there are still a lot of things to be improved.

"But it will also be so important to keep the personnel at the club. If you keep this group of players together then we can maintain momentum. As an individual, when you're winning games, the difference is that you want to do more. When you're losing games, it's hard if the fans are on your back. Now when the players come in we're confident and want to play. That's why the team tends to do better.

"Over the last couple of seasons, it's been the same squad. There haven't been many signings and while Christophe (Berra] was a massive loss, we're still achieving what we want to achieve.

"If we lose some of the lads who are out of contract at the end of the season, I hope the club can bolster the squad. You don't want to rest on your laurels – we need to improve in order to take the next step forward."

The shrewd manner in which Laszlo has organised Hearts also drew praise from Ruben Palazuelos, the Spanish midfielder. His older brother Emilio and younger sibling Alberto travelled to watch him play for the first time on Saturday against Celtic and were suitably impressed. "They saw a very exciting game," he smiled. "There's not a big difference between Hearts and Rangers and Celtic. We can get closer to them if this team stays together."

Pundit. He says he's happy where he is and wants to be challenging for trophies and playing in europe is a massive incentive to stay, pretty much what the headline states mate :o)

Good news that he wants to stay another year or so will see him develop and ultimately increase his value.
One thing is for sure he will not go to Ipox to young and too expensive for them.

Get Obua and Kari signed up get Kingston and Nade off the wage bill bring in another 3 faces and we could have a very good strong squad for next season

Only one question. Is the jealous Moronov going to sabotage a successful team again? Left to manage the team and given some money to buy a striker I get the impression Laszlo could achieve something special next season.

Just been having a look and a read and our youngsters are looking good
Its a big step up to the first team though do you think any are capable for next season?
Templeton looks tiny though and that has to be a big disadvantage

Driver -could well be a line for the media. How often has a young player in Scotland indicated he wanted to stay and then promptly left blaming the departure on something internal at the club. His agent is probably testing the water right now with other clubs as well as Hearts(renegotiate improved contract). In any case the decision as we all know will not be his but his employers and if they see the carrot of reasonable dosh then he will be off.

#7 - Even if several are capable of step up will they be good enough to challenge OF who will no doubt bring in players with a bit of experience. History would suggest not much will change in Scotland with OF being leading forces.Don't think Hearts will be capable of sustained challenge. We have seen promising signs in the past from a number of teams but challenge has been stopped because these sides were unable to compete in the salasy market and lost good players, not only to the OF but to the lower leagues in England.

Templeton may be small but it hardly stopped wee Robbo or JC from making a career out of football. Let's give the guy a shot and see what he can do.

Ideally, get Europe wrapped up sharpish and let the young boys play out the rest of the season.

On a side note, the under 19's/reserves (pretty much the same team for both) appear to be doing very well. This feel good factor seems to be coming from the top i.e Csaba and working it's way down through all the age groups. The most important thing for HMFC to progress is keeping the manager. He has said all along he wants the youth system to supply our players for the future and this is clearly giving them the motivation to perform.

#11 Thanks for the run-down - all very encouraging stuff and so good to hear of a Celtic side losing out to a very late goal. No doubt they will lift the title but they must have thought they had it when they scored so late in the game themselves. Poetic justice and a real scunner for them. How sad, what a shame, never mind....

Two of my favourite players from way back, Donald Ford and Willie Hamilton, weren't exactly big bruisers and managed to acquit themselves well enough. OK, I know the game has changed since those days but if these laddies keep eating the porridge and work hard in the gym then they'll do OK.

#9 Never say never but I can't see Vlad selling anyone along the M8. More likely to go to Championship sides a la Berra but with the inducement of (possible) European football if they stay put they are probably thinking along the line of Driver. His comments chime well with Csaba's advice to stay put for a while longer and let him help develop them more. Anyone think he can't? Not me!

13 All for giving the youngsters a chance but Robbo was stocky so was JC Templeton at this moment in time is very skinny looking and looks like he needs to bulk up.Still growing and will still be learning so lets hope for the best

Re Driver - Think I said in post 8 that it would be his employers (Hearts) decision did I not?. I am aware of his contract position. Agree that for most teams outwith OF home grown is best way forward but do not agree that this will ever be good enough to challenge OF due to financial power. In regard to young players coming through are you saying that Hearts are ahead of other SPL sides in the development of home grown talent or what do you mean by Hearts being "ahead of the game".

I often think most agents are not interested in the player but how much they cam line their own pockets, That is not to say they won't negotiate the best deal for the player but as long as the deal also suits them. If a player is happy where he is the agents will always try and convince him otherwise.

I have a friend who knows Driver very well. I've asked him what the deal is, and he says Andy wants to stay in Edinburgh. All his friends and family are close and if we quailify for Europe, he won't get the chance to play there if he is playing in the English Championship.

So lets hope we qualify and Lazslo can continue his rebuilding with Driver in the team.

#19 - Let's hope you're right!

But, as Palaz said, "We can get closer to them (the OF) if this team stays together."

Is Romanov listening, though?

We'll find out pretty soon...

Anglo Jambo,

Driver, Wallace, Jonnson and Obua can only get better. Then we have a crop of youngsters who are now ready for first team. If Stewart is more consistent, Ellliot keeps up his present form along with Bruno, Palazeulos and Zuli no reason why we can't challenge big two, then we have Black joining the squad No Doubt the OF will be raiding rest of SPL but w have no reason to worry as we have better players than the rest anyway. Our biggest problem will be injuries and not enough quality in depth.

Anglo Jambo,

In present financial climate we have to hope higher wage earners agree to a cut in salary. I think it is club's intention to keep Kari and Bruno, but at what cost. Never once in the January winter did club
say they were up for sale.

Driver has always said the right things as far as i am concerned.

He seems to love edinburgh and who can blame him. The vast majority of places in england are horrid by comparisson. He got a great deal last summer, which he earned and will be every bit as good as any deal he could get in the championship. Hopefully we are in the europa cup next season so why would he move to burnley or coventry?

I could understand him wanting to go last summer after the season we had just had with no manager. The negativity surrounding the club after mcghee turned us down was huge. The turnaround in 9 months is huge. If he didnt want to go then he will not want to go now.

He will only go if we get a daft offer.

Driver is a level headed young man, he is not after the big money buts seems to want to remain at Hearts where he is now enjoying playing.I dont beleave for a moment he would sign for the Rangers. As from next season they will be the 3rd force in the SPL.

#24 From my posts at 8 & 9 how do you arrive at your conclusion that I am, as you state, "bitter hobo hibby". Have you nothing more constructive to say other than hurl insults at those that may have differing views from you?

#18 Thanks for your response. Must admit I am not in a strong position with regard to progress of youngsters in Hearts reserves but I do agree that other SPL teams are following the home grown route and some indeed have been doing this for years and have received undue criticism for lacking ambition.Unfortunately finances will always dictate the level of progress teams can make regardless of the frustration that this brings to their supporters.

#26 I'm afraid he/she doesn't. You won't get a reasonable debate out of him.
#24 Give it a rest. This has been a decent debate about the article so far - we don't need it decending into insults.
FWIW, i can't see Bruno taking a big pay cut to stay with us. The temptation of Europe may be there but i think he'd have to take a £3-5k per week reduction and that's a lot of money over the course of a year. Remember he may not play as well next year so his chance of a move could diminish and all of a sudden he's missed out on the chance to earn big bucks. Would be a shame but i think we'll lose him.
