Belief soared as Rangers marched to Cup Winners' Cup final of 1961
IT WAS the start of what has been referred to as the golden age in Rangers' European history, when Scot Symon's young side began to reap the benefit of lessons learnt in previous years against teams such as AC Milan and Eintracht Frankfurt.

The la
tter club, then a force in German football, had defeated the Ibrox side 12-4 on aggregate in the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1960. It had proved a chastening experience for Rangers, and what they had to aspire to was again outlined in the final at Hampden Park, when Eintracht lost 7-3 to Real Madrid. The following season proved a watershed one for Rangers and, indeed, British football.

Hearts were league champions of Scotland in 1959/60 so Rangers were not able to return to the European Cup. But, on account of their victory in the Scottish Cup against Kilmarnock, the Ibrox team, with Jim Baxter now added to the side, were invited to contest the inaugural Cup Winners' Cup competition. The cast-list included other great names of the time, such as Dynamo Zagreb and Ferencvaros, and also a couple of sides – ASK Vorwaerts and Red Star Brno – whose names have since faded into obscurity. Present, too, were Wolverhampton Wanderers, then regarded as one of the finest teams in England and who, under legendary manager Stan Cullis, had won the league championship three times in the Fifties.

The series began with a preliminary round of two matches in order to reduce the entry to a manageable eight. Spain and France had refused to enter their eligible clubs but it was still a strong cast-list. Rangers were paired with the Hungarian side Ferencvaros, and at Ibrox in September 1960 managed to make up for two successive home defeats in Europe – Sparta Rotterdam as well as Eintracht Frankfurt had triumphed in Glasgow during the previous season – by winning 4-2. The return leg in Hungary, which was played at the national stadium rather than Ferencvaros' own ground, proved hairy for Rangers, and the Scots looked to have undone the good work of the first leg when they trailed 2-0. The away goal rule had not yet been introduced but no matter, for Davie Wilson scored on the hour mark to ward off the prospect of a toss of the coin being used to separate the teams.

After just one round Rangers were already into the quarter-finals, where they met Borussia Moenchengladbach. It was an opportunity to avenge their drubbing at the hands of another West German team, Eintracht Frankfurt, six months earlier. Indeed, they handed out a thrashing themselves, with the German leg held in Dusseldorf due to stadium concerns at Moenchengladbach. With the Eintracht Frankfurt squad sitting in the stand, Rangers, in a bruising encounter that was dubbed the Battle of the Rhine, won 3-0. The second-leg at Ibrox was a foregone conclusion, but Rangers still managed to raise eyebrows by winning 8-0, with Ralph Brand becoming the first Ibrox player to score a hat-trick in Europe.

The wishes of many were granted when Wolves were drawn with Rangers in the last four. "Wolves were one of the top clubs, and they came up to Glasgow thinking they would give us a hiding," recalled Harold Davis, the Ibrox wing-half who featured in every European match that season. "But they didn't do that."

The English reporters expected the English team to romp it, but 79,229 fans inside Ibrox saw Rangers win 2-0 in the first game. Four days before the second-leg, England defeated Scotland 9-3 at Wembley, something which made the outcome of the return match at Molineux even more satisfying. A 1-1 draw saw Rangers become the first British side to reach a major European final, and proved that the players were benefiting from this exposure to talents, and playing systems, from all across Europe.

"I played 28 European games and they were all against top teams," Davis told The Scotsman. "But we were still learning in those days. The continental type of play, even in those days, was recognised as being more ball-skill orientated rather than ploughing through the mud. It took us a long time to get over that and catch up with them.

In these days we were all Scots lads, and we had a lot to learn when it came to playing on the continent. It was the old gutsy, proud-to-be-a-Scot mentality, and we went out there and battled. And it was battling against more skilled players. In the end we were not that far short."

Not far short, but not quite good enough. Against Fiorentina in the final Rangers paid for a poor result in the first leg at Ibrox, where they fell to a Luigi Milan double and also had an Eric Caldow penalty saved. It was the first and only time that the Cup Winners' Cup would be decided over two legs although, in reality, the second match – which was played on a Saturday evening – was hardly necessary, with the Italian side, who had reached the final of the European Cup in 1957, unlikely to spurn a two-goal lead at home.

Fiorentina, then under the charge of the legendary former Hungarian international Nandor Hidegkuti, established a three-goal aggregate lead in the 12th minute, with Milan again the scorer. Although Rangers equalised through Alex Scott, Swedish winger Kurt Hamrin scored the winning goal on the night for the Italians. "We were a bit unlucky to lose over in Italy," recalled Davis. "We had as much of the game as they did, but we came out of it on the downside."

Bonfires were lit on the terraces to mark the achievement of an Italian club winning a European trophy for the first time, while Rangers, champions of Scotland again, prepared for another shot at the European Cup the following season, where more valuable experience was gathered in a march to the last-eight.

Celtic Forever,

The problem for this lot is that unlike in toxic little scotland, there will be no cheating by the officials, and as a result, the drivel dished up will be shown for what it is...second rate, inadequate and ugly football.

The defeat of the stinkgers is inevitable but the embarassment they will cause to scottish football will be enduring.

Rangers...the shame of scotland

Oh dear - first comment comes from a bitter, hurting Celtic supporter.
Listen again to the Levein and Eddie Thompson rant from Saturday. Eddie singled out the 'wee Celtic player' who continually falls over and gets a foul or penalty.
The main embarrassment for Scottish football is the team that goes abroad and whose supporters wrap themselves the flag of a foreign country and would rather sing that national anthem than that of the country of their birth. Is there any other team in the world that does that?

Back in 1961 there was no crowd segregation in Scotland and I remember, as a teenager, being at Ibrox a few weeks after the Borussia Moenchengladbach match, to support Kilmarnock.

A couple of Rangers supporters behind us were arguing about which of them was the truer Blue; this argument seemed to last most of the first half, before one of the pair produced what he thought was his trump card: "Ah'll tell ye hoo loyal ah am - ah went tae Borussia fur that gemme!!"

Wonderful thing the teaching of geography in Scotland - I've yet to find Borussia on any map of Germany.

Apart from anything else, this is hardly the scenes that Rearrangers would have liked leading up to their departure for Manchester,is it.

Rearrangers will travel down south with echoes of cheats....cheats....cheats....ringing loudly and very clearly in their lugholes, right up to the point where they cross the border and sanctuary in England.

What they must not be allowed to forget is that, regardless of the outcome on Wednesday those same chants of cheats....cheats....cheats will still be waiting and echoing for them as they cross back over the border into Scotlands dear green pastures.

The scandal of last Saturday in Govan will reverberate in Scotlands Footballing History for decades.

In fact it will never be forgotten.
Will it.

Funny ol' game innit?

Celtic steal a point from Aberdeen and add 2 to their own in the process but their fans can't fathom any favours given to Rangers?

Should have been a penalty for DU, no doubt, but that will not be the first time we will see those kind of decisions - for or against. As for the goal chopped off for off-side I reckon the linesman got it right as the DU player was definately interfering with play. Had the offendor not been in the position he was in the Weir/Daily (don't remember) would not have gone for the ball and it would have fallen into the hands of Alexander - no brainer.

Great wee story above though. Heard John Greig say the other day that they had to play 8 games to win the ECWC back then although and that it is infinately more difficult these days....can't argue there. Asked on his opinion of wee Barry superceeding him in European appearances and the possibility of emulating his European Cup winning success he replied, "First and formost, I'm a Rangers man. Nothing means more to me than the success of this club. I hope Barry goes on to lift the UEFA Cup and everything else. We want to win everything".

John's ma' hero!

Talking about heros...What about Tam Forsythe, eh?

Last memory I have was being in the Main Stand at his testimonial. Big Tam had the biggest smile on the park and got a standing ovation when the ball was thrown over the top of his head and he back-heeled it back in front of him. Tam was never known for his skills and it should be known that this happened as he was making his way to the tunnel at half-time.

He could cut the legs away from a centre-half, smile, apologize and make the guy think it was his fault he got tackled. Doubt if he'd play many games in the girly leagues we have these days!

The penalty was dubious and if given would have been harsh and the disallowed deflected goal was off side as the player ran across the ball and was active ! Why the big deal ? However, their well earned title of domestic cheats...cheats ...cheats will be their welcome as they cross back into Scotlands dear and green pastures to a cacophony of hissing and booing.
Quite similar in fact to the welcome Koooh-Saaaahn-The-Nut received from The Ibrox Angry until Wally stepped in to tell his own fanz to shut it,or he`d be resigning.

They can run to Engerlund if they like, but there will be no hiding place for them on their return.

Rearrangers imagined that the run up to their game on Wednesday would fill the meeja with nowt but praise for the team from The S.W.A.M.P.

Nothing could be further from the truth in fact.

Rearrangers efforts in Manchester are being overshadowed by the furore and debasement of our game in Scotland, by what went on at Ibrox last Saturday.

Some people are still trying to insist that that qualified as a football match.
Can you imagine the cheek of them...attempting to say that poor Dundee United were beaten in a FOOTBALL match.

What happened at Ibrox at the weekend is as far away from football as the population of Scotland outside Ibrox could wish to get.
And thats a fact.

Sad.

Number 43, there is no debate. For generations officials in scotland have cheated any/all competitors. The only difference now is that TV doesn't lie and people are refusing to tolerate it anymore.

Its a game of two halfs we are told.

Well then,The Very Reverend The Mike changed all that on Saturday with his debasement of footballing rules and regulations with poor Dundee United his latest victim.

On Saturday,at Ibrox, that was a game of NO halfs !!

As Craig Levein so eloquently put it,"there was no point in us turning up".

So here goes for the virgin, not mary btw, firstly I hope the gers come through the uefa cup clash, will be hard one but I feel we have a chance. Can remember 72, only 9 then, I know bit old for a vigin.
Watched the Gers v DU, ref got it wrong with penalty, although NH touch took him and ball away from the danger area, with CQ covering should have been pen yellow for DW, just a bad call or no call. Goal was offside from the lino's angle, no worries on that one.
Any way my first comment, I await the expected abuse from some quarters, lets dance.

What impressed me most about Saturday was our performance. None of the nerves that had been apparent a few games ago, in it's place a swaggering confidence.

Barry Ferguson has found form at the right time of the season and Novo too is one fire.

Our solid defense and midfield with their ability and work rate can bring home the UEFA cup and wipe away Scotland's shame that was Lunatic O'Neill's efforts to win it.
The booing of the eventual winners that day shamed Scotland and only proved celtc win, lose or draw have no class.

Why are you so desperate to defend Mikey the Rangers team bus driver....

Are we likely to see Mikey the Rangers team bus driver wheeled out to explain why.....

He did not award a penalty against David Weir...
He disallowed a perfectly good goal for UTD.....
He did not send off Koooosan for his head butt....

I doubt we will....Mikey will probably be wheeled back into the cupboard and brought back out by the SFA the next time Rangers need a favour...

Rangers want the UTD game postponed....the SPL say no...the SFA appoint Mikey?....

Marginal decisions happen for and against all teams....funny how the Rangers lads are desperatly using marginal decisions to try and balance the books in relation to the outrageous decisions that took place at Ibrox....

Mikey has had the biggest influence on the league this season....

Mikey has officiated more Rangers games than any other official....each game has had a contoversial decision and each one has been in favour of Rangers....

Mikey has officiated 4 Celtic games....and we have won 1 due to an own goal....not one contoversial decision went in our direction...

Coincidence.....I think not

If Craig Levein honestly believes Mikey has been dishonest...then he has every right to say so....

It's interesting that the Rangers lads want Craig to shut up and just quietly disappear hoping everybody forgets what Mikey did!

I see Zenit had a friendly with AZ in Holland. They wer 2-0 down until just before half-time and then had to bring on their top-scorer (not eligable for Manchester) to get the draw.

What does that mean? They tanked the Gerries (no pun intended) and underperform against Alkmaar? Hope they don't find their form before Wednesday! Our lads will be well up for it and the sight of the red, white and blue army from Glasgow to Manchester will surely give them the required boost...I hope.

I have to say, I've been habitiously negative about the European games all season and the Teddy Bears keep grinding out the impossible. Scots-Irish Club? I'll take a wild guess and say you're probably right...never, ever will a another Scots-Irish club lift the European Trophy...you're bang on the button there, well done!

Wasn't such a second-rate trophy in 2003 was it? If you think it was then you're outnumbered 80,000 to 1 if you only count Celtic supporters.

Cheers broke my cherry!
Big hang ups on here over the old age problem of hate between the OF, don't mind this I think the hate/rivalry, call it what you like can be good for the soul dependant on how far you go. It's the positives from supporting your team that should always outweigh your disdain for your rivals. Back to other points, over the years I've seen terrible decisions given aginst and for almost every team in the world, this paranoid interest in corruption is way over the top! Take the good with the bad, your a long time dead so don't get overly excited.

The sash and Derry's walls.I just know that the real English people will be breaking their hearts laughing at you lot when you infest their country this week.Being subservient to your English masters is going to give them a good laugh. bring them on, re your ealier post. Neither Rangers nor Dundee were the first Scottsih team in Europe. That honour goes to Hibs who were the first British club in Europe when they reached the semis of the first European Cup in 1956. Consequently they also hold the record for the first player to score a European goal on foreign soil and the first to do likewise in the U.K. Chelsea were also invited to take part but the then short sighted F.A. would not grant them permission to enter.

The penalty was dubious? Weir's right leg went straight into his thigh. He run right across him. Definite penalty. Red card.

He ran across him for the goal ruled offside? hahaha. You know nothing about football. That's probably why you find Rangers entertaining. Hope you get hammered on Wdnesday. A victory for football is needed.

A decent performance by the Gers to collect 3 points in the lead up to the UEFA Cup final.

Neither the Gers and tic supporters can deny we have been helped in our points total by dubious decisions by match officials in the last wee while. Both sides!!!

Now it on to a European final with hopes that the Gers can be the first Scottish side to lift the trophy and bring it back to Scotland.

I would hope the entire country is behind the team with their good wishes and support. lol

Shankly might have taken 'a' team on a tour in Europe but he didn't manage Hibs until after Jock Stein went to Celtic from Hibs. Hibs are certainly the first British side to play in an accredited UEFA tournament.

I see the old sectarian card has been played, rubbish hand if you need to play that old one. Seems people never learn, what happened to the old adage "live & learn". I have also read certain people claiming they and their ancestors from Ireland have suffered institutionalised secterianism, oh I love an "ism" since imigrating to these shores, well I've never sufferd from that problem. Don't get me wrong, I would never return to live in Scotland, weathers p1ss, but I still feel patriotic to scotland in the sporting arena. I hate English football, international level, with a passion, almost as much as I hate the tic, but that is the beauty of the game, it's sport it does not pay the bills enjoy it, good and bad and indifferent.

#122 that's true some really dubious decisions. I've no gripe with either of our sending offs on Saturday but I'm mystified as to why Celtic didn't get a penalty when Murray climbed all over one of your players, can't recall who! Also why JVH wasn't booked for smacking Hogg in the mouth with his arm. Dangerous play, nothing else and why Hartley wasn't sent off for a second bookable offence, not even spoken to!

It's my belief that "not trying as we've nothing to play for" and pissed off at Rangers will not come into it. The ref made the bad shout no rangers. It is not easy to go out and not play, integrity, which you tic fans are big on, would be brought into question. I believe that DU will give you a game and if you win then fair enough, but you still need the gers to drop points elsewhere or its alll for nothing, as I think it will be.

Good luck to the Gers on wednesday. It would be nice to have the set of European trophies in Scotland at last. We failed in our attempt in Sevilla now it's your turn...
All sorts of comments about yer style of play and tactics have been made over the duration of yer run tae the final.Yer there, enjoy it and bring it back for Scotland.

It always intrigues me the amount of airtime given to contentious decisions that favour Rangers compared to those favouring Celtic. At the time I though it was a pen, and seeing it on TV, it was. And a red card. That may have cost Rangers 2 points. Emphasis on MAY, as Rangers were still ahead. Lets not forget that officials have handed Celtic 8 points in recent weeks with 'wrong' decisions...was that cheating?

What I do not recall, is Levein or Lorraine Kelly or the 'sellick minded' on here being so disgusted by the the WRONG decision to disallow a Daniel Cousin goal at Tannadice earlier this season. This would have put Rangers 1 up and would have resulted in a 2-2 draw at best for the Terrors. Come on Craig and Lorraine...did that official 'bottle' it.

I also don't remember Walter Smith accusing the officials if cheating that day.
