Goalkeeper headache for Scotland

Published Date: 05 August 2009
THE consequences of over-indulgence can often be felt long after the next morning, and the impact of the dawn-chorus frolics at Cameron House hotel by members of the Scotland squad in spring continues to impinge on the international team ahead of the vital World Cup qualifier against Norway next week.
Manager George Burley was yesterday forced to name three goalkeepers with only five caps between them after being unable to turn to Allan McGregor as a replacement for Craig Gordon, who has failed in his bid to be fit following knee surgery.

McGregor would have been an obvious choice to take over from Gordon, and indeed was preferred over the former Hearts goalkeeper when Scotland travelled to the Netherlands in March. However, his decision to join skipper Barry Ferguson and various other team-mates in an extended drinking session saw the Rangers pair relegated to the bench against Iceland four days later, and, following misbehaviour during the game itself, excluded from Scotland involvement completely.

The incident has compelled Burley to impose stricter regulations ahead of the return to the traditional Scotland team-base on the banks of Loch Lomond. He will talk to the players on their arrival this weekend and outline their responsibility to themselves and the nation prior to next week's Group 9 clash in Oslo.

"They will not be taking any alcohol," he said. "That scenario happened between the last games. We will make it clear we will not tolerate that kind of behaviour again. I will speak to the staff and players. I have to be aware of every scenario – what they eat and what they drink. There won't be any alcohol drunk from the moment we meet up at Cameron House."

With McGregor out of the equation, Burley has opted to pick Neil Alexander, David Marshall and also Jamie Langfield, the Aberdeen goalkeeper who Burley saw concede five goals against Sigma Olomouc in a Europa League qualifier last week. Alexander is the most experienced of the trio, with three caps. Cardiff City's Marshall has featured twice for Scotland while Langfield is still uncapped.

Burley appears to favour Alexander to start against the Norwegians, having high-lighted his big-match experience. The Rangers keeper is still unsure whether he will be begin the season as first-choice at Ibrox, following McGregor's partial rehabilitation in the eyes of Walter Smith.

There has been no softening of stance on Burley's part, and both McGregor and Ferguson were absent from yesterday's 23-man squad. Seven of the party will not meet up with their Scotland team-mates until Sunday, due to commitments in the English Championship, which kicks-off this Friday.

Darren Fletcher might not meet up with the Scotland squad until Sunday evening. Despite being made skipper in the absence of Stephen McManus, the midfielder is keen to play for Manchester United in the Community Shield clash with Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday.

But Burley's main headaches are in the goalkeeper and centre-half positions, with McManus missing. The 39-year-old David Weir has been overlooked and looks to have won the last of his 64 caps. Burnley's Steven Caldwell is likely to deputise for McManus, alongside his brother Gary.

Another broad hint from Burley concerned Alexander, who last kept goal for Scotland when keeping a clean-sheet against Japan in the Kirin Cup in 2006. He has also played in a Uefa Cup final for Rangers, and two successive Scottish Cup finals.

"David Marshall has been in the squad before and has done really well," he said. "Neil Alexander came into the Rangers team at the end of last season and was outstanding, and I remember him well at Ipswich Town. He has done very well at the highest level.

"You look at your options and you have to make a decision – who do you think is going to be the best on the day? That is the bottom line."

Burley said the shared lack of international experience among the goalkeepers was simply a fact they had to accept. Alexander, he noted, has had the benefit of recent big-match occasions with Rangers. Marshall kept a clean-sheet for Celtic against Barcelona in the Nou Camp in a Uefa Cup tie, but this was five years ago.

"Neil Alexander finished the season with Rangers and was outstanding – I cannot remember him making a mistake," said Burley. "He has that experience. And David Marshall is experienced at club level. If you lose a 'keeper like Craig it is always going to be a big blow. But other players can come in."

Scotland world cup victory,

i'm on this train 05/08/2009 08:06:29
I am more worrying about our striking potential, to be honest.

Good luck to Celtic for tonight. I guess it was Sting who once sang 'I hope you pump the Russians, too', if i remember that one correctly.

Re. # 1

No replay. Extra time and penalty shoot-out, if necessary.

As far as I am aware it is straight to extra time and then the dreaded penalties!

For the sake of what is left of our co-efficient I really hope we end up with both Rangers and Celtic in the Group stages of the CL. However, I expect that the trip to Moscow will be a step too far at this early point in the season.

Saying that, getting all the CL money would be a wee bonus!

He's the "in form" keeper

Good luck to Celtic tonight. I've a feeling they might just sneak a result.

How many caps does McGregor have? Not going to dispute that he is the second best option Scotland have and should play when Gordon doesn't, but he can't have that many more caps than Alexander or Marshall?

It doesn't matter how many caps you have, it's how good you are. Craig Gordon was the in form keeper when he was Scotland's regular keeper and McGregor has really only featured in the Rangers squad over the past few seasons.
In my opinion Alexander is the better "in form" keeper of those that are mentioned above in the list to replace Gordon and, given the lack of matches Gordon has had, I reckon Alexander should be in front of him in the pecking order just now also.

McGregors banned from playing for Scotland after he humiliated himself and Rangers F.C. during his last outing for his country.
His captain and Rangers teammate at the time and who shares the same amount of humiliation is also banned from playing for Scotland.

Which is right and proper.

I know that McGregor is banned from playing for Scotland, I was merely answering the previous posters question re caps gained and giving my opinion on who should be in goal. If you actually read my post you will note that I never mentioned anything about McGregor playing.
Still, if it gives you an excuse to vent your spleen then fire away ;-)

Blondie,

While a fit Gordon is obviously the number one choice, in his absence, I'd go with Alexander. McGregor's not even the best keeper at Rangers anyway and should never be allowed near a Scotland jersey again after his antics.
16

Perspicacious,

Further,I do wish that the media when doing their best to lessen and soften the expoloits of both Rangers players at that time would stop refering to their joint shame as the "Boozegate" affair.

Thats just a misnomer that the media has deliberately propagated so that they can avoid publishing the real issues and precisely why Ferguson and McGregor are banned from playing for Scotland.

I think you misunderstood my point. I agree that the number of caps a player has is irrelevant as it should always be the best who play. I was just trying to figure out why the journalist above has mentioned the number of caps held by Marshall and Alexander. I don't think McGregor has many more so it makes that part of the article a bit un needed. Seemed to me as though he was trying to talk down the other 2 players.

I know this comment will be very unlikely to survive if past history on these threads is consistent but here goes anyway.

This is poor journalism.

In discussing the goal keeping situation this journo declares that....McGREGOR would have been the obvious choice to replace Gordon....then....INDEED McGregor was fisrt choice over the former Hearts keeper in March.

The simple fact of the matter is that McGregors name when used in discussion and in context with Scotland should only be to deride McGregor not to raise him up and praise him as this journalist attempts to do.

Shockingly biased,towards Rangers players,journalism.

From a Teddy Bear, good luck Celtic tonight, but the task looks daunting. Scotland need European success! I think the Scotland team vs Norway next week should be:

Even "Walter" told McGregor and Ferguson(in particular) that they would have to live with the shameful consequences of their actions for the rest of their lives, and not just footballing lives.

No matter when it occurs in the future "Walter" said, then photographs of them sitting on the Scotland bench will always come back to haunt them.
They will just have to deal with that whenever and however often that occurs,"Walter" concluded.

While Marshall had a good game in a draw away against Barca when he was 19, Alexander should be given the nod for Scotland. With the injury to Gordon and the keepers now in the squad, its just my opinion based on what I have seen the last couple of seasons Alexander might be the best option at this time.

#19 - Please, do us all a favour - get this perpetual outrage out of your system before the season starts, or we'll never get to discuss anything even vaguely related to Rangers or Celtic. How anyone can possibly read the original article as being even vaguely complimentary towards McGregor is beyond me. Everyone knows why Ferguson & McGregor aren't there. No-one thinks they behaved appropriately. No-one thinks the punishment is overly harsh. You're just desperate to see an establishment conspiracy where there isn't one, I'm afraid.

As for the goalkeeping choice, it's a no-brainer. Alexander came into the Rangers team in difficult circumstances and proved his quality by putting in a string of fine performances during Rangers' best run in years, culminating in both the title and the cup. He was no worse than McGregor over the period, which surprised me, and deserves his place.

I also think it's indicative that Rangers went on that run without Ferguson. He's a quality player and a few years ago was the best Scottish midfielder by some distance, but those days are long gone and his main contribution these days seems to be killing the momentum of whatever team he's playing for. I'm glad we managed to get a few bob for him and hope he enjoys himself in England, but barring injury I don't think either Rangers or Scotland will miss him this year. Davis / Mendes / Thompson is a far more dynamic midfield without him and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do.

Alexander took over from McGregor 2 seasons ago and helped RFC go to European final also winning a cup winners medal.

This past season when McGregor was dropped he back stopped RFC to a league title win and another Scottish Cup.

Marshall and Alexander have given Scotland decent options with Gordon injured. I would take Alexanders 20 appearances last season for RFC over Langfields 30 odd appearances for the Dons any day.

Also Alexander was the keeper when Scotland won that major trophy the Kiren Cup. LOL.

However, the Rangers hiearchy and follow followers in the stand wanted to preserve the status quo.

Thankfully they won the day and Monsieur Le Guen was sacked for his troubles.

Marshall has played more matches cant argue with that.

But as you have pointed out how many BIG matches has Marshall played in since leaving Celtic what 4/5 years ago?

Alexander in less games played has performed well in Europe and domestically as his honours won indicate.

Marshall was also transferred to Cardiff after Norwich were relegated.

Rather than go back and forth, both keepers have their pluses, Mr. Burley has the final decision.

Thank goodness that PLG was given the boot, we were on our way to a 3 or 4 the place under him in the league.

Sionko, Svensen, Sebo, the French keeper, (excuse spl) etc were a waste of good money on rubbish players.

WS came in steadied the ship and wins 4 domestic honours in the following 2 seasons, as well as taking the club to a European final.

PLG you are not missed!!!!!!!!!

Anybody know the respective appearances/goals conceded or appearances/clean sheets of the two 'keepers?

I'd be slightly worried by Marshall as a first pick but happy to be convinced by stats! Yes, he was fantastic for Celtic in Europe, but that was several years ago now.

As long as whoever is picked actually makes the effort, unlike McGregor who I thought was absolutely shocking against the Dutch, boozing session notwithstanding.

Daniel Cousin told the outside world the exact same things were still going on under "Walters" stewardship of the club a full 18 months after Monsieur Le Guen left as a very rich man.

Wee Fl*ckie confirms that that indiscipline is still rampant and the order of the day under "Walters" watchful eye.

Marshall was an excellent shot stopper, but he failed to inspire confidence and had little presence for a big guy. The 4-4 draw at Motherwell sticks in the memory and for all the "Marshallona" hype he didn't do enough when he had the chance. Yes, he was excellent in his first 2 games(the save he made at Ibrox probably being the best he ever made) but he didn't do that much after it. I think a lot of folk got carried away with the hype.

The most notoriety Cousin will ever have in his career was at Ibrox.

Still he is on the big bucks and getting a game once in a while for Hull.

As for WS's stewardship, he must be doing something right. SPL Champions.

There was a lot of pressure put on the shoulders of a 19/20 year old keeper at that time. Giving up 9 goals to Artmedia and Motherwell did not help the lads confidence.

He is still fairly young for a keeper and could turn out to be a really good one, time will tell.

At this time I think Alexander should be the replacement for Gordon, he has handled difficult situations well the last couple of seasons.

Daillyman, i think had Marshall been given a few more years in the reserves/youths at Celtic Park he'd have been a far better goalie for us than he was. His first couple of performances were unbelievable but after that he made a few mistakes that really seemed to knock his confidence, and his presence seemed to diminish. A bit more experience and a few more years would have dealt with that.

A well-deserved win for the Bhoys, and a huge improvement on last week's performance.

Now comes the hard part; hope the draw for the next round is kind to us...

Excellent result for Celtic, and good for Scottish football too. I offer my warmest congratulations.

One more round to negotiate, which is likely to be even more difficult, and I find myself in a "no lose" situation.

If Celtic make the CL group stages, then it reflects well on Scottish football, especially after the embarrassing capitulation of Motherwell, Aberdeen and Falkirk.

If Celtic don't make it, then it means more money for Rangers, but also offers the possibility of a long Europa League run, which will boost our nation's coefficient, something that's now badly needed.

Well done, bhoys.

Missed the last half hour of the CFC match having to go out.

I see they won 2-0, a very good result away from home. I had the CFC to win 1-0 then go to penalties, with my 2-0 prediction for them last week I will leave the predictions to the pundit from now. Again well done and a great result.

A great result for Celtic and the SPL.

Should still start the season earlier to be better prepared for the first game though as it's too dodgy the way it is. Once up and running there is no need to fear anyone if you can beat, as you have done, the likes of Man Utd and Liverpool.

I would personally want to play and beat the best team rather than hope for an easier option. That seems to me like a lack of confidence if you hope to avoid some outfit. But I suppose there are times when it may seem pragmatic, but ultimately you should be up for it no matter the opposition or there isnae much point.

We are lucky to have some top notch keepers despite the carry on with Allan McGregor and Craig Gordon being out.

The only way to be sure is if you are with all the potential choices now when the training is happening and see who is the sharpest reflex wise and positionally as well as agility etc. and weigh it all up to pick the right man for the moment.

The Summer Cup could be brought back, and teams from other leagues could even be invited, and get up to match fitness for the European Cup and other big fixtures like World Cup qualifiers when they begin, instead of being caught cold year in year out. Especially for teams who are hardly ever in Europe, and generally suffer the worst, it could make all the difference.

It should be a no brainer, but,,,,

You have tae admit, it's a while since a team like Partick Thistle beat the European Cup finalists so comprehensively.

Alex wis fair chuffed when I asked him at the coaching course who he played for when he was younger.

He said that after beating Celtic in the Final that they would have been as well to hang up their boots as it would be difficult to beat that.
