Hearts 1 Kilmarnock 2: Hearts count cost of complacency

Published Date: 06 October 2008
CSABA Laszlo made an immediate, positive impact when he became Hearts manager, but there have been signs this past fortnight that sustained improvement will take longer.
In Saturday's loss to Kilmarnock, Laszlo's side were at least more competitive than they had been in the heavier defeat at Dundee United a week earlier, and with a little good fortune they might even have snatched their first draw of the season. Compared to their earlier home outings, however, this performance was a poor, disjointed display.

"In the first four or five games the team did what I wanted," Laszlo noted after a result which saw Kilmarnock take over third position in the Premier League from his side. "In the Dundee United game they began to go back."

The problem in this match, the manager went on to note, was that his team had failed to follow his game plan in the first half, missing out the midfield in favour of a long-ball game. A talk at the break, he said, had solved that problem. "After half-time, there was more stability."

Maybe so, but a couple of questions still arise. Why did Hearts go against their manager's instructions? And why, when he is evidently capable of remonstrating volubly from the sidelines, could Laszlo not sort things out before half-time?

What is more, while they may have played to orders in the second half, they ended that 45 minutes on the losing side. They had at least achieved parity playing their own game in the first.

Laszlo said lack of concentration remained a problem, while the captain, Christophe Berra, suggested his team-mates might have read too much into their previous 100 per cent home record and not realised how much work would be required against Kilmarnock. But, if they did not know it before kick-off, it should not have taken Hearts long to understand how hard they would have to graft against a visiting team who dominated the opening stages with some crisp passing and determined running.

Kilmarnock maintained those virtues throughout, particularly through Mehdi Taouil, David Fernandez and Danny Invincibile, and Hearts supporters frustrated by their team should at least acknowledge that the opposition had something to say about the result. In an SPL season where there is little to separate the ten clubs below the Old Firm, none of those ten can afford to presume itself superior to the rest.

The funding provided by Vladimir Romanov may have given Hearts a better chance than their rivals of establishing themselves as the so-called third force in Scottish football, but the players brought in by Laszlo have not yet had time to make a difference. The Danish striker Mike Tullberg, for instance, was only making his first start, and has yet to get match-fit.

So it would be premature to write off Tullberg, or the Ugandan midfielder David Obua, the manager's other key purchase, who was missing from this game because of injury. In the case of the strike force, however, it should be noted that none of the four men used – Tullberg and Jamie Mole started up front, Christian Nade and Juho Makela were there at the end – got on the scoresheet. You cannot legislate against injuries, but eight games into the season you should at least have one striker you can rely on to score more than the odd goal.

Instead, all the best chances fell to Laryea Kingston. The Ghanaian took his goal well, steering the ball just inside the right post after Simon Ford had blocked a Michael Stewart shot, but he was not so accurate with a couple of late headed chances, and also saw a 70th-minute shot saved well by Alan Combe.

Kingston's goal was the culminating moment of an improved spell from Hearts which had begun after they had gone behind to a superbly taken strike by Taouil direct from a free-kick.

The home side enjoyed another decent passage of play in the first quarter-hour of the second half, and first Saulius Mikoliunas, then Kingston, had chances to put them ahead.

Kilmarnock had fewer opportunities, but with around ten minutes to play they made one count. A simple ball from substitute Donovan Simmonds split the defence, and Craig Bryson ran on to poke it past Marian Kello in the Hearts goal.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Mehdi Taouil (Kilmarnock)

The Moroccan midfielder's goal direct from a free-kick was the one moment of excellence in an otherwise undistinguished encounter. In open play, his intelligent running on and off the ball helped give his team the edge.

Nothing's changed, this is the same garbage from last season. The honeymoons over Laszlo!

Let's be honest, we were lucky at the start of the season to pick up the points that we did.

Time to start walking the walk Laszlo, I know you can only p!ss with c~#k you were given, this lot are a disgrace to the jersey and you must take a large slice of the blame.

How can you justify playing Mole, Kingston, Miko, Wallace?

Hearts are going to get a proper doing very soon!

Don't be so sad Jambo's. You're rubbish, it's true, but you're not alone.

There's only a few points between all 10 non OF teams, so no one is really setting the Heather on fire yet.

Which Heather is very pleased about....

PS: Well done to St Mirren.

Yes it is time to have Vlad over here and find out what his future is for our club, quite clearly we do not have the players at the club, the football we are being served every week is very poor, Csaba is very negative ' if you don't lose a goal you won't lose the game ' we pass back to the keeper all the time, the whole team could be moved on for me. where are the great leaders of Save our Hearts, get Vlad here NOW.

C'mon the Gorgie !!

I am really uncertain about this Laszlo bloke.
I'm not sure he actually has full control, and his antics during the game strike me as extremely bizzare.
Listening to him post match, makes me wonder just how bad it must be for the players, at post match briefings etc. Not a prospect they will relish me thinks.
Calm doon Csaba and take note, we don't need an answer the length of War & Peace, when you're asked what went wrong after a defeat like Saturdays.
We have a couple of players to come in, but even with them, we are still a pretty poor squad just now.
Another season of grin and bear it?

Team's simply not good enough. You can't replace players of Hartley / Skacel / Brellier standard with the likes of Ruben, and even Kingston, and expect to just as good.

Raise the place to the ground, and start again... Romanov out.

1) No experience - too many young players without the old heads in the right positions to guide them.

2) Too many luxury players - you cant play Miko, Kingston, Audrey and the rest of the wingers in the same team. Other teams simply outfight and out-muscle us. The SPL is a different league where you would get away with max 1 of these players and that is why we should have a scottish assistant in there to flag this.

3) Full backs and forwards just not good enough - need I say more. Lee Wallace is too slow and lacks confidence. Jason Thomson will never make it at hearts.

We created very little at home against a Killie side who are nothing more than workman-like - everything we are not.

Csabah - Don't blame the players this time.
"They don't do what I want".

You made the ludicrous decision to revert to a less attacking formation WHEN WE WERE TRYING TO GET A WINNER. Bringing with - and sticking with Ksanevicius is idiotic - If indeed it is yourself that is picking him. I reckon it actually is - almost as daft as playing a centre half in midfield.

Shaba should put his hands up for this defeat
Starting with Mole was a bad choice so was bringing on Audrey instead of Nade, four forwards used on Saturday and i counted one shot between them and that was off target from Tullberg
Just before half time thought Thompson was injured and though i dont mean to sound harsh i wish he was Karapidis would have went to right back and Pallaz would have gone in midfield
Think we would have done better
Eight games in and we dont look like scoring a goal time for some changes Lazlo

#16 I'm a hibby too but unless you can follow up your assertion with some evidence then you're wasting your time. I think I've read "HFC are going into administration" every week since the "Riccarton 3" did their stuff.
I don't think either of the 2 results on Saturday will have any bearing on the derby. It certainly seems that any time we think we have the ascendancy the Yams manage to steal a derby win! No doubt we have a strike-force that can score goals, but will our midfield manage to win enough ball to provide them? It seems we got a wee bit of luck up at Sheepland, hope we get a wee bit more in the next match...

I doubt it very much mate, Hearts will not go into admin even though they have a large debt. Their debt is owed to their parent company who will just keep underwriting it or pull the plug. Cant see the Lith's pulling the plug as it just wouldnt make any sense at this time to do it, unless the parent company is about to go down the pan and needs to relieve itself of this "toxic debt".

Anyway back to the football instead of all the usual off field nonsense.

In the opinion of Hearts fans, how bad were you really on Saturday?

Do you think uncle Vlad has the fax machine up & running again?

If he has this surely means Csaba = puppet does it not?

Still feeling quite so confident about Sunday week?

I have seen a few of the names that gave me some considerable abuse for not renewing my season ticket after 20 years becoming disillusioned too. I didn't get carried away with Csaba fever and wasn't willing to spend so many Saturdays trailing home with disappointment.

It's not cost of complacency as headline states, it's lack of funds for forwards!

Was disappointed in yesterday's performance although it was good to see Larry back at his best - a wee bit of luck and he could've had a hat trick.

Thought Killie look the more organised though and in true JJ style they put themselves about a bit. If the JTs had a crime count of over half their team booked I'm sure it would have made headlines but just another day at the office for Killie.

#39 - I agree entirely about the need for forwards. If Larry was unlucky not to have had a hat trick then what could a good striker have done?

#41 For the umpteenth time on these threads, Hearts are NOT owned by a bank. We are part of UBIG of which Ukio Bankas is just another part. Anyway, with all these governments saving banks what's to say that same wouldn't happen with Ukio if push came to shove?

#36 - Still feeling reasonably confident. We have a hex on you the same as Dundee Utd have over us and you maybe used up your luck against the sheep.

No I'm not laughing at another poor result for the Jambos, I'm laughing at the graph from the Lithuanian stock exchange showing Mad Vlad banks' share price movement over the last 12 years, have a look....

Now I work for a bank as a bank manager, and I tell you what, it is not looking good for little Ukio Bankas, I would say both the bank and club will do well to be in existance by the time next season is around!! Cheerio HMFC!!!

GeorgeCowieOrWalterKidd?,

06/10/2008 09:21:42
#42 The size and location of a bank has absolutely nothing to do with anything or did you not notice the massive banks in the richest country in the world going to the wall? It's how much it's been a) borrowing and b) lending (and c) who it's been lending to). I have no idea, and don't care, how those things apply to UKIO (who are just one small part of the group that owns us in any case) but as an obvious financial expert, perhaps you can enlighten us.

#36 Lazlo seems to be getting no honeymoon period here. He's the SPL's newest manager - not to mention being completely new to the game here - he deserves time and has done a great job so far. We were missing Driver and Johnsson yesterday who are both key players, not to mention Obua who looked good in his first couple of games.

As for fax machines, the dodgiest team selection at the weekend was Walter Smith dropping Alexander for McGregor. Influence from Murray who doesn't want to see someone being touted as worth 9m on the bench? We'll never know as the press doesn't ask Rangers those awkward questions. Hearts on the other hand... players dropped and it's a massive Vlad-inspired conspiracy.

Guys, this is the way it is going to be for some time yet, we will win a couple then lose or draw a couple, the focus is on getting the finances stable and whether we as fans like it or not that should be a priority. I think this was always the long term plan of Romanov although some idiotic statements were made when he first came in that was always the plan, at least I think and hope it was!!!!

Just continue supporting the team on the park and let the rest of the work go on, it could take a couple of years yet.

Can anybody tell me why Hearts going out the box would make the doom merchants happy?
Hibs would have no reason for being just as I think Hearts need Hibs.
Let me tell you the whole SPL is in trouble with this credit crunch.
I hear Murray mints was told by RBS last week that his overdraught was to be charged at the rate banks lend to each other and he told to fluff off!
They told him he had 24hrs to find a new bank!
If this is the line with Murray what do you think will be happening with other clubs.
Its time for the whole football world in Scotland to get behind there teams and turn up for the games.
47

Who?,

06/10/2008 10:06:25
Hearts are probably quite fortunate that the international break is upon us as it will give Lazslo and some of the players an opportunity to regroup before beating the pink brazil. In the run up to the last international break the team was grinding out results even when not playing well. That is a sign of a group of people determined to work together for the greater good. That determination was missing on saturday.

Hibs probably have the easier run up to the derby as none of their players are required for any international games whereas hearts will have players jetting off to all corners of the globe.

Saturday hit home how poor the current squad actually is and how little is in reserve. There have been numerous debates about which players are not up to scratch so i'm not going to start that one again. However Csaba has a chance over the next two weeks to work with the likes of Glen, Rapnik et al from the youths and those not away to drill them into a compact unit for the trip to the bandit country.

Hibs are extremley beatable and hearts have the players to do so. Laszlo needs to pick the best players in their best positions then coach them during the game.
48

Jambo-ree,

06/10/2008 10:06:51
#44 - Not relying on it. As you say it'll probably be a very tight game and sometimes a good record against a team can give just that wee bit of an edge that turns out to be vital. At least Casba's got two weeks to get them sorted out again.

No doubt should be better but a bit eraly to throw the towel in.Personally i saw nothing wrong with 'the determination/effort' on saturday(incl Larry wmo IMO was 8/10). CSABA carries the can for the last two defeats; wrong team/wrong subs. However Tullberg/Driver/Obua/Glen/Aguier all just back/due back.all players that can improve us in the last 3rd.
FANS will not 'knee jerk' & will stay behind our 'young & developing' side.

I can't help but think that all the big talk of challenging the Old Firm has now evaporated and the comments now are only about going for 3rd place. I'm fine with that as an aim for Hearts but I would like to remind people that Hearts have been the 3rd best club in terms of league finishes, cup final and semi final appearances, European runs, attendances etc for most of the last 25 years or so.

In fact, under Craig Levein we finished 3rd in 3 out of 4 seasons.

Since the sqaud that Burley build finished 2nd (and would had won the leage but for his sacking) we have seen the club slide further and further from 3rd place. So far nothing has changed this season. This squad still looks very weak despite a few decent wins. Losing to Falkirk and Dundee Utd away, Kilmarnock and Airdrie at home in the first couple of months of any season isn't impressive.

It's just disappointing that in order to achieve less than we had before his reign, Romanov has added around £16m to the club's debt, made the club into a laughing stock in world football and treated the fans, players, media etc with total contempt.

Just thought I should remind people of these facts.

Now we are challenging (early days) for 3rd with a young talented group of young players.

As far FACTS: the debt will be not much more than when VR took over not £16m higher as you state.

Der Kaiser,

As I posted on another story, difference in the match was Killie had a chance to score and took it, Larry had a better chance and put it straight at the goalie. Killie simply got right in Hearts faces and put pressure on Hearts whenever they had the ball (a tactic that always works against us). And, I may sound like a broken record here but Ksanavicius should not be playing. He's too lightweight and simply not good enough.
For me Hearts need to settle on two centre forwards and stick with them. Try and build a partnership. Problem with this is Tullberg needs match fitness, Nade needs to prove he's worth still paying his wages and Makela has had soo little time on the park it's difficult to form an opinion on him. We should bring Glen back into the first team and play him alongside another striker. This means that Mole and Audrey should be dumped in the reserves.
I also hope Bruno gets back into the team. Good player and good delivery from corners and free kicks. With Driver, Obua and Beslija still to come back from injury the squad looks decent on paper....pity when it's on Grass they're so so.

""Hibs probably have the easier run up to the derby as none of their players are required for any international games whereas hearts will have players jetting off to all corners of the globe.""

Fletcher - Scotland squad
Shiels - N.I squad
Bamba- Ivory Coast squad.

So, you're talking p=sh.

#69 I'd settle right now for a stuffy 1-0 with a last-minute own goal. 7? Have a word with yourself mate,I admire the confidence but form goes out the window in the Embra derby.

Me too......from a scuffed shot from Lee Wallace : )
I can't make the Derby game, (my second time in the last 7 years) but although the form book does go out the window I don't see anything but a Hibs win. I look at Hibs team and I can see players who will want to win because it's a derby and they want to beat Hearts more than any other team. Then I look at my own team and apart from say Stewart and maybe Berra.....the rest of the players will probably look upon it as any other game.

#69 - Which was my whole point. If you'd gone back the chain of exchanges you'd have seen I was saying that Hibs may have used up all their luck against the sheep. So we are agreed. You've had your luck and now it's time for it to even out, yes?

But will leave you to continue hyping yourself up over the derby - how many times do we get this cr/-\p from Hibees, and how many times do you actually manage to beat us let alone h_ump us? Here's your starter - once in the last two seasons (and only 1-0). You can trawl back through previous league and Scottish Cup games at your leisure, if you're brave enough.

#72 - Not sure I agree with you on the attitude of the other players. The whole team got stuck in in the last derby game so a repeat of that would be good. Mind you at that time we had big Velicka waving his fist at everyone and think we miss for that as much as for his goals.

#63. It seems you also need to be reminded of the facts. Does anyone honestly believe that a homeless Hearts playing at Murrayfield would be doing any better? Most sensible people would have predicted a long and painful demise for Hearts under those circumstances.

Other facts, Levein's side were dire to watch and finished miles behind Rangers and Celtic. It is also the case that during the 25 year spell you mention there have been some pretty low points including very nearly being relegated.

So let's not pretend that everything prior to Romanov was all rosey in the garden and let's not pretend that everything is gloom and doom with Romanov as owner.

Csaba needs time to get to grips with what is required. He did not have time to make lots of changes pre-season, his signings have not had time to bed in due to injury. He will also need time to make decisions about fringe/reserve/under 19 players etc etc. It's only EIGHT games into the season FFS and we have won half of them FFS!

#75 Congratulations - that is the noise a clock makes. Now if you ask an adult they'll explain to you how to use the clock properly by looking at the big and little hands and telling the time! Or maybe if you save up all your giros you can buy a digital clock - it's easier to use and designed for stupid people ....

We cannot blame Csaba for the way the players play on the park. This is mostly players that he got when he took the job and if we are honest the majority are mince and not fit to play for Hearts. My hope is for a massive clear out come January. The first would be Nade what a waste of money, followed by Kingston, Wallace and Mole. Dont tell me Mole is still young you either have it or not and Mole doesnt have it for the top league. Roll on January.

#82 Why not blame csaba? I do...he is not playing our best players & persists with picking players that are not playing well enough to justify their inclusion.

Sammy/audry the best /worst example. You are correct Mole is not good enough then pick GLEN...believe me he was a standout for the reserves along with palaz v st Mirren a couple of weeks ago. If NADE only lacks fitness(agree with you re him being a waste of money) then why not give him 90 mins in reserves?

Disagree re KINGSTON....replace him with masckela and we are more or less in agreement re who should not wear our famous jersey.
