Published Date: 02 January 2009
HEARTS won't alter their system of fielding a lone striker designed to catch the opposition on the break in tomorrow's Edinburgh derby at Tynecastle unless Csaba Laszlo, their manager, decides not to play with any strikers at all, according to his opposite number at Easter Road, Mixu Paatelainen.
The Hibernian manager, who has used both 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 this season, reckons he knows exactly what brand of play Hearts will have in store for the New Year visit of their city rivals. "Tactics will be very important in this match," observed Paatelainen. "We know they are going to field one striker, or maybe not even one.

"That's why we must make sure we don't get sucked in too much. We realise their strengths and weaknesses and must make sure we have the tactics and players out there who can cope with that. I think Hearts could play 4-4-2. Why not? If they select to play that way, but they don't. They play with one striker or with no strikers. That's for sure. It's as simple as that."

Hearts' preferred 4-5-1 system this season uses Christian Nade up front on his own, with Laryea Kingston and Andrew Driver supporting from the flanks. However, the absence of the injured Bruno Aguiar, usually the most attack-minded of the three central midfielders, as well as the suspended centre-back, Marius Zaliukas, could tempt Laszlo to tinker with the usual formation. "We will try, tactically, to do something different," the Hearts' manager admitted.

When Laszlo substituted Nade against Dundee United two weeks ago, he brought on midfielder David Obua through the middle, effectively playing 4-6. Against Hibs, though, Laszlo could recall Devidas Cesnauskis on the right and use Kingston as support for Nade.

Although Paatelainen believes he knows how Hearts will choose to play tomorrow, he's full of admiration for the manner in which Laszlo has restored organisation and spirit at Tynecastle.

"Csaba has done a tremendous job there," he said. "Hearts have had a fantastic run, they are up the table and doing well. Last weekend was a disappointment for them (Hearts lost 1-0 at Aberdeen] but

every run comes to an end. They are in a very similar position to us. We want to bounce back (after losing 4-2 to Kilmarnock] and correct the situation. We didn't defend well last weekend and are determined we will defend better in the future. That starts on Saturday."

While Hibs, sixth in the SPL, have more options in attack than fourth-placed Hearts, Paatelainen knows he needs to be wary of matching his rivals' strength in midfield, both in tomorrow's league game and next week's Scottish Cup tie at Easter Road.

"I can't say there is a way that we will always play against Hearts, of course not. You have different players out on the pitch and so do they. And that may affect our thinking. We might not have Rob Jones and that affects us. They will be missing players as well."

Paatelainen has yet to decide on a role for new signing Jonatan Johansson, but seems most likely to use his countryman as a substitute winger. "He's improving every week," reported the manager. "After a lay-off you know someone is obviously not as sharp as they would be if they were training or playing regularly. We have organised bounce games and he has done some extra running and weight sessions to get the sharpness back.

"Jonatan has been working hard and he is approaching peak fitness. I wouldn't have any fears about asking him to play at Tynecastle. Whether he will start is another matter."

Asked if he'd signed the 33-year-old as a central striker or as a wide player, Paatelainen was coy. "It depends on the players available for us to select and also depends who we are playing against. But one thing is for sure, he's very versatile. He can play wide on the left or on the right, and he can play up front on his own."

Now the transfer window has opened, both Edinburgh clubs could lose players this month. Zaliukas, Kingston, Driver and Christophe Berra of Hearts are all tipped to attract interest from England and abroad while Middlesbrough are expected to check on the form of Hibs striker Steven Fletcher tomorrow.

I hope the Jambos put 6 past the Hibs whingers.

C'mon the Jambos, and you don't hear that very often from me.

But realistically, I'm going 2-1 the Hearts.
3

Private Pike,

If Mixu really does understand the importance of matching Hearts in midfield then that's a step forward.

Our forwards are in a different class to theirs. Our midfield could easily match theirs if they are deployed correctly in the right numbers. Our defence therefore wouldn't have to take all the strain like they usually do.

It all hinges, like so often this season, on the midfield. Get that right and the game should be ours.
4

Private Pike,

02/01/2009 00:35:56
For gods sake TOTT. Why do you answer him? Have a look at some of the other threads over the past few days. Strangled by him and his disgusting OF friends which stops many Hibs and Hearts supporters from posting.

The only way to avoid that is to ignore him.

Of course you are entitled to your own opinion.
5

Private Pike,

02/01/2009 00:39:15
TOTT I don't think Hibs forwards are off form but they are not getting any service from the midfield. The midfield, such as it is.
6

Private Pike,

02/01/2009 00:48:39
TOTT I didn't say there was anything wrong with these comments did I? My point was different and obviously you've exercised your prerogative to ignore it.

With regards to the respective midfields, I don't see the Hearts midfield often enough to judge but I feel confident that the Hibs midfield would aquit ourselves well in the derbies if the correct players were selected and we did not allow ourselves to be outnumbered.

Private Pike,

JJ in his spell at Ibrox had a very good turn of speed, and did score goals.

I wonder how much pace he has lost with age, as that to me was his biggest asset, time will tell us.

As a player who has now over 90caps I was always amazed at what a poor first touch he had for a striker.

As stated earlier his one big asset was pace to get beyond defenders and run onto through balls.

He should help the Hibs as a good reserve striker.

Will admit that United have a poor record at Parkhead.

If you take away the first 5 matches of the season when United sat bottom taking 2 points from a possible 15.

Since that time they have been one of the inform sides in Scotland since that opening stretch of 5 games, and they have played good football. The big thing for them against Celtic is that they must score the opening goal, and have a strong official in the middle of the park. If they fall behind to the tic you're 2-0 may look good.
12

Daillyman,

I think you are being a wee bit harsh. The player has come back from 2 serious knee injuries, played himself back to fitness, knows the SPL and would be a player who even getting his wages doubled or tripled could do a job in a squad for no fee.

He seems to be on Leveins team sheet weekly, and I think as a good boss would not play a pretender.
20

Daillyman,

02/01/2009 02:00:43
66

There have been hundreds of those types of players who have failed to make the grade, yet there are players who can adapt. Look at Hartley at St.Johnstone, did you ever think then he would fit into the Celtic squad at that time. If the Gers can get Wilkie, he might surprise and it wont cost money in a transfer fee.
21

Daillyman,

02/01/2009 02:04:13

Off loading players and their wages is the big thing.

If they can clear out 5 or 6 who are not featuring, look to Eastern Europe for a couple of decent signings, one major priority is a left sided midfield player.
22

Daillyman,

02/01/2009 02:07:19

I think the lad has to be given a shot up the middle, where I think he looks more comfortable.

There is nothing wrong with changing the face of a side with a different player, look how predictable we were up front in the 2nd half against the tic.

He has scored goals for his country playing up front what is wrong with trying him there. It's supposed to be a squad game today, I just don't think WS knows that.
24

Brisbane Bhoy,

02/01/2009 02:13:39
Talking of the transfer window.

Ain't it funny how every time an agent is in the paper talking about a link between his client and Celtic/Rangers, the agent never fails to claim that "there are several clubs in England and Europe interested, so Celtic/Rangers will need to move fast" or words to that effect.

Have a look over the next few weeks and see how often that garbage is spouted.
25

Daillyman,

Is there no players in the reserve team or the successful Under19 side that should be given a shot?

How far away is Aaron from getting a regular start? or Fleck from being blooded into the main squad and actually getting 1/2 hour during a match?

Hearts to play with only one forward ?
Do we have one?
Thats one more than Hearts have in the goal scoring department!

Appologies to Driver who has been growing in stature and is a player worth retention, but Im afraid the current Hearts team are adequate in defence, quite good in midfield and non existent as a goal threat unless the burden is shared by the rest of the team. They need a proven goal scorer, and Nade is simply not capable of scoring consistently at this level,or if he is,he hides it well !He is a trier but thats it!
If you do not score goals you can at best hope for a draw, and you also need to keep a clean sheet to get any points therefore.
In a 3pts for a win system an average of 1 point per game can mean a too close for comfort relegation zone existence!
Hearts need to find the net or forget it.The current forwards are simply not good enough, and Czaba would probably be as well playing 1 up front, maybe none!
I do not expect a high scoring game against Hibs.I think Hearts will at best score once. The question is how many can Hibs score? It could be 1-0 Hearts or maybe 0-0 but if a shock is going to happen its Hibs who must score at least 1 to do it.This game has got banana skin for Hearts written all over it.
30

huggs,

02/01/2009 08:13:22
Nade is playing up front on his own and has barely had any goalscoring chances lately as he has been holding the ball up and chacing lost causes
When we do get a striking partner for him he will get the goals

What's the story here? Hibs have been playing without a goalie for three seasons.

I think some of the folk knocking Nade haven't been to see him play this season. Since he's got fitter he's put in some of the most entertaining forward performances from a Hearts striker I've seen since Ricardo Fuller, in terms of his touch and skill. He can't score but the team's not set up for him to score many.

Its definately the case that Rearrangerz are busting a gut to be rid of Bougherra.
It is why he has been held back,in case of aggravating his injury prone body.

Its a further indication that Rearrangerz` bankers are having a word in their shell to cut their wage bill, and that "Walters" "Ibrox Ten" amazing announcement was NOT done through choice.
Taking Bougherras signing on fee, transfer in fee and wages since arriving at The Scrapyard,Rearrangerz wont break even.

Its is a COST saving excercise.
Prompted and forced upon Rearrangerz by their NEW bankers.

Nodz, winkz and funny haun shakez just wont be enough to save Rearrangerz in the financially turbulent world we are currently in.

With effect from 12/01/09 Rearrangerz` NEW bankers Lloyds TSB are now accountable to all of us as.
Taxpayers from Wales,England,Scotland and last but by no means least Ireland, all collectively contribute to Rearrangerz survival.

Reckon tomorrows Hertz, Hibbes game will be a stinker based on the above.

Looks like both may be holding something back for the Scottish Cup game next week which is the more important overall.

If Hertz are as negative as Mixu suggests, then hopefully, he wont come out whinging about the tactics, as he has played a very defensive formations himself in a few games.

When you consider that that Hibs have the best choice of strikers outside Glasgow, this is possibly why Hibs are mentioned in the race for 3rd place.

In fact, if you look at Fletcher, Nish and Riordan and compare that with Misser, Boyd(penalty) and Laugherty....there isn`t much of a difference in quality.

If Mixu played to Hibs strengths, they would be in a better position than they are currently.

If you are a betting person......
Hearts best and most creative midfielder - out.
Half their solid defence out.
Refs itching to get the cards out to prove to Romanov who is in charge.

Take all three points and factor in prices. Remember you should NEVER bet with your heart.
3/1 FFFHibs is very decent value. However - the draw looks likely ,as a weakened Hearts team is about on a par with a full strength FFFHibs.
I would NOT be saying this if we actually had a decent striker as I'm still not convinced that Nade is guaranteed to put maxium effort in.
It all centres round one person - Micky Stewart - he has a point to prove and could win or lose the game on two aspects - his whining and ability to disrupt his own team , plus his aften attrocious passing.
Still - if an on form Stewart turns up , with his ball distribution on song - 3/1 FFFHibs no longer looks the value.

We all expect Karapidis to move back to defence...wouldn't shock me to see Casbah surprise us.
Plus, i wouldn't move Kingston inside to support Nade - LK would NOT like the "attention" he would receive in the centre/attacking section of midfield. He's not a fan of tough tackling. Remember though - these next two games are going live throught many countries.....his chance for shop window showings. Expect a good show from him.

Losing 4-2 at home to 10 men got anything to do with it? That was fully one third of all the away goals Killie have managed so far this season.
