STRIKER Danny Invincibile marked his return from injury with a brace for 10-man Kilmarnock in a thrilling 4-2 victory against Hibernian in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.
The Australian opened the scoring in the fifth minute and Allan Russell doubled their lead six minutes later to leave the home side stunned.

Hibs midfielder Dean Shiels scored two penalties in a five-minute spell from the 34th minute, with Killie goalkeeper Alan Combe sent off for bringing down Colin Nish in the build-up to the second.

Invincibile then headed the away side back in front two minutes after the restart before Garry Hay took advantage of lax defending to notch the fourth in the 75th minute.

Kilmarnock made a bright start to the match and took the lead with a clinical finish from Invincibile.

The striker was picked out at the back post by Jamie Hamill and he volleyed the ball past the hapless Yves Ma-Kalambay from close range.

With Hibs still in shock at losing the opening goal, the Ayrshire outfit pounced on their opponents' vulnerability and doubled their lead in the 11th minute.

The goal came from a corner that Rob Jones was forced to concede with Russell about to connect with Hamill's dangerous cross.

Ma-Kalambay flapped at Mehdi Taouil's set-piece at the near post and the ball broke to Russell who found the net with a left-footed shot from 10 yards.

Hibs defender David van Zanten became the first player to be booked when he went in with his studs showing in a rash tackle on Gavin Skelton.

Hibs' plight worsened in the 28th minute when captain Jones was forced off injured and was replaced by Steven Thicot, with the Frenchman fitting in at centre-back.

Kilmarnock had their own problems to deal with when Manuel Pascali and Hamill had a clash of heads but both players were able to continue after treatment.

The home side turned the game on its head with the award of two quickfire penalties.

The first came in the 34th minute when referee Euan Norris pointed to the spot after Shiels was fouled.

The midfielder brushed himself down before firing the ball high into the net.

Moments later Nish raced clear of the Kilmarnock rearguard and was brought down by Combe as he rounded the goalkeeper.

Combe was given his marching orders and Shiels found the net past substitute goalkeeper Damien Rascle with the aid of the post.

Taking into account his side had been reduced to 10 men, Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies brought on pacey winger Willie Gibson for striker Russell.

Gibson was in the thick of the action as Invincibile headed the visitors back in front in the 47th minute.

Gibson chipped a teasing delivery to the back post and the unmarked Australian powered a header past Ma-Kalambay from just two yards.

Hibs tried to respond immediately through Van Zanten but Rascle palmed the full-back's near-post shot wide after working an opening with Shiels.

John Rankin thought he had levelled in the 64th minute after cutting along the 18-yard line but his right-footed shot was pushed away for a corner by Rascle.

With Hibs chasing the game, manager Mixu Paatelainen took off defender Van Zanten for striker Derek Riordan with the visitors happy to sit on their narrow lead.

However, it was Kilmarnock who doubled their lead through Hay.
Gibson latched on to Thicot's slack pass to Sol Bamba in the centre circle and raced down the left flank and into the box.

The ball fell for Hay as Gibson attempted to get around Bamba and the
left-back lashed a powerful shot low into the net from an acute angle.

worse than the ICT game. Mixu, gtf. that was not football, we had a man extra and they controlled the game. DVZ should've been off long before Mixu realised it. our players have been exposed as the creatively deficient journeymen that they are...

#1 There are no good teams in the SPL, Celtic and Rangers are simply better than the rest. I have believed all season that we are capable of better than we are producing but that it will not happen under Mixu. I was happy initially with the JC appointment but that went pear shaped quickly. Mixu I never wanted back. Hearts have shown that there are good coaches out there, all it takes is a bit of balls on the part of the board. Indeed, they showed that with the appointment of TM, and the lack of balls is what disappointed me so much whem they appointed Mixu. Imagine what we could do with a decent coach who would not be hamstrung by being forced into losing a load of players in January....

What a disgraceful performance by the Manager. Mixu demonstrated once again that he cannot pick the best players, he cannot pick a team formation that works and he cannot make substitutions at the right time.

When Killie went down to 10 men we changed nothing. We were unable to make use of our extra man because we have no midfield.

A couple of half wits sitting behind me went on about AOB for the whole of the second half.

The midfield largely ignored O'Brien for the second half. Time after time, in 20 yards of space and waving his arm to get the ball he was ignored. The idiot behind me kept saying "He's hiding, he's not shouting for the ball" I really think that starting off on runs, waving your arm for the ball should be enough. It was as though the midfield had not had an introduction to him.

We have to stop blaming the players here and understand that when you set up the team so that they are not sure what they are doing, not sure where they should be playing, making good players look bad then we must look at the Manager.

I still maintain that we have the best squad outside of the OF but we have a Manager who hasn't a clue about team selection and tactics.

#1 It's almost as if you are so clueless yourself that you might want to join Mixu in blaming the players for not concentrating, for making individual mistakes and for not winning the games that we should win...like today. Idiot.

#3 Private Pike

I shall read the full analysis in the Independent on Monday.

Seriosly though, the defending today by Hibs was abysmal. Three goals that came from ball watching as crosses come in and the other a combination of giving the ball away for the umpteenth time and then a shot past a goalkeeper from almost on the bye line.

Hi Neutral

Remember I didn't exactly say that I read the Independent.

The defending in todays game will be repeated over and over again this season as long as we persist with Mixus' theory that "We can give them the midfield." An occasional game where we dont concede a goal is not proof that the system works.

Today DVZ, the target for #1 rarely was allowed to concentrate on his own position and this makes him look bad. Sheils was pulled all over the place and was largely ineffective. Contrast these two in the games we played with both 4-4-2 and Bamba at centre half. Sheils knew what he had to do and DVZ didn't have to cover for Hogg.

An example only for two players but this can be carried through the whole team. How many good games has Fletcher had this season by his own standards? How many games have there been when he has had proper support?

Mixus' tactics, to dignify the process, makes good players bad and makes a potentially very good team bad.

Unable to make the match today, due to illness, but from listening to radio I imagine that Killie saved their best performance of 2008 for last.

Same again at Falkirk next Saturday and we will be well set for THE big derby cup-tie.

Proud to be a Killie!

Today was just abysmal, truly pathetic by hibs.

5# Agree with most of your comments, particularly the last paragraph and support for AOB who some fans seem to be making into a scapegoat but I think its a push to say we have the best squad outside the OF, we are certainly capable of better than were doing at the moment and should be closer to 3rd but i still think there are a few too mnay average players (DVZ, Hogg, Rankin, Shiels more often than not) and too few real quality players in the squad.

I was away from scotland for most of the games under mixu at the start but what struck me most watching his team play is how similar we are to when bobby williamson was in charge. Theres a total lack of tactics or understanding of how to go about winning games by the management, far too many players dont seem to know what their role in the team is and we seem happy to let other teams control the game, even at home to sides below us in the league (Hamilton owned us for most of the second half a couple of weeks ago). Theres no attempt to entertain, and no clue about subsitutions, setting a team up or learning from our mistakes and he has an alarming habit of blaming the players when things go wrong.

In short, I started to feel maybe he was turning it round after a bad start but the last few games have been really poor and I think its obvious its time for a change, i just hope we do it sooner rather than later do we dont give him more money and then a new manager is hampered by a squad full of players he doesnt rate.

I think the truth is quite simple,, Cowdenbeath is about the right level for Mixu's coaching. He is just far too far out his depth. Petrie neads to bite the bullet, ditch him and get Yogi or perhaps JC back or maybe find a successfull man in the English 2nd or 3rd tier. Some of the players are not up to top six SPL standard, Rankin, Jones, DVZ, O'Brien maybe even Nish? but they are not picking themselves thats Mixu. Also since John Collins left the Entire Squad is vissibly less fit which oes to show that nobody in the coaching staff has any idea how to use the training facilities mst likely because at the level their used to teams use the local sports centre or council park. If thats what Petrie is aiming for thats what he will get but people will stop watching and without cups and euefa money his precious profit margin will shrink fast.
Bad business all round.

I was at the game and we were rank. Didn't deserve to be 2-2 at the break, but what a gift! Killie down to ten men and with a big Hibs crowd behind the team you'd expect nothing but a victory...think again! Some very poor displays on the park, and no urgency about the team. Kilmarnock looked like a hungry team, Hibs like overstuffed turkey's. No doubt duds like Nish, AOB, Deano, and DVZ will get jerseys for the Yam matches. You may as well write the script now.

3/Pike.If you realy are saying you think Hibs have the best squad of players outside the O.F. you undermine some of your other points which I cant comment on because I dont watch Hibes often.Hibs dont have the best squad out side of Edinburgh never mind the O.F.
Talk me through player by players of the two Edinburgh teams squads and tell me how many would walk into your team from Hibs.So lets start with the goalkeeper?
Having said that I cant see either team winning both games in the next two weeks but I will go for a home win in the SPL and draw at your place. Then again your top squad might just do us in both.
JT for life.

Private Pike:
AOB has been a player under two different managers with two different systems at hibs (and newcastle before that). No manager on earth could make AOB elevate to the level of a good footballer. He can't turn, he can't cross the only thing is does well is run as fast as possible in a straight line.
The reason that the rest of the team don't pass to AOB and DVZ is because they don't know what to do with it when it comes to them. I imagine that you are one of those supporters who applauds players who manage to control a pass or find another team mate without the ball making contact with a member of the other team en route. Raise the bar mince for brains.

Hobo Harry,

12 Jambo Dave, You need to think through before you post. You don't see Hibs very often but you do know that Private Pike is wrong about having the best squad outside the OF. What do you base your statement on then? Mid-season league positions alone? Do you really know that little?

I really am sick to death of those so-called Hibs supporters who post rubbish in this thread invariably aimed at bringing Hibs players down.

Were you at the game today? Did you see the crosses that AOB put in? How many did not reach a Hibs player? Just the one.

You really need to attend more matches and you really need to understand what it is that you're watching. At the moment you come across as a bit of an idiot.

neil7908,

With regard to AOB, everyone is entitled to their own opinion about individual players, i dont think that berating someone every time they touch the ball is going to help them or the team but if your paying £20 to attend a game then I my book you have a right to speak your mind, especially considering the inept display against Killie. And i dont think AOB will be reading these forums every night and crying himself to sleep, footballers need to be able handle criticism.

I actually quite like AOB and think that in the right system and with a few more games he could be a good player for us but he wasnt that great today (clearly many players in green also fell into that category). I still think his final ball isnt quite up to standard yet and when compared to the Killie sub Gibson, AOB looked ineffective.
