THE Premier League has dismissed any suggestion television replays could have influenced referee Steve Bennett's decision to overturn a penalty he awarded at Hull this week.
Hull thought they had earned a late lifeline in Tuesday's 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa at the KC Stadium when Bennett pointed to the spot in stoppage time for an apparent handball by Ashley Young.

Bennett, however, changed his mind following protest
s by Villa and consultation with his assistant Andy Halliday. The pair correctly ruled the ball had struck the crossbar and not Young's raised arm but there have since been claims that a third party, having seen a replay, could have influenced the decision via their earpieces.

This would contravene Premier League rules forbidding both third-party influence and the use of replays, and Hull have called for an investigation.

The Premier League are adamant nothing untoward occurred and a spokesman said: "(Referees chief] Keith Hackett has spoken to Steve Bennett and the other match officials and what is absolutely clear is the decision was made between the assistant referee and the referee."

The Premier League has also pointed out that video screens have now been removed from technical areas.

Yet with numerous monitors in other parts of the ground, and the match being televised live, Hull claim questions still need to be answered.

Manager Phil Brown said: "You look at people's body language and you look at the linesman, who was less than a yard away from Steve Bennett, and he wasn't talking to him – but he was listening to something.

"There is a monitor down the tunnel which Sky control and literally five, six yards away is the fourth official, Howard Webb.

"As far as I'm concerned, something did go on in the 92nd minute that has affected the result of the game."

Having worked in Sport Operations for a long time I can confirm that the 4th Official does indeed regularly move a few metres back to see the Broadcaster's monitor, particularly if there is an 'incident'.
I watched the Hull game and I agree that when the ref moved alongside the linesman there was no immediate contact between them as they were both concentrating of their earpiece communications.
Personally I believe that this type of teamwork by officials is positive provided that there is consistency however if the football authorities have not yet sanctioned such practises then the match must be replayed.
What is unacceptable though is the behaviour of the Aston Villa players and the 'mob' mentality displayed by them.
May I also suggest that a blatant attempt to handle the ball is as much an offence as attempting to swipe the legs from a player and missing! The AV player did try to punch the ball, that is clear from the video.

What was wrong about the reffing in this game is that Aston Villa didnt get punished for the double tackle by defender and goalie on the Hull striker at the beginning of the game and their goalie knew he got away with it by the look on his face! Then that penalty that was then wasnt, how can the ref who was closer than the linesman be over ruled? Time for referees in both football and rugby to be held more accountable for their performances and for managers not to be punished for expressing opinions.

No one seems to be interested in the fact that there was no contact between ball and player.NO penalty.Surley arriving at the correct decision outweighs the manner in which that decision was reached.

Peter

I watched tha game..AWFUL! I thought that Hull were worthy of a point in the game but not at the expense of a poor error of judgement by a shaky ref.

Wasn't a penalty, but Young should be given a red card for intent.
