Jefferies casts envious eye at Smith

JIM Jefferies will take his new-found status as the SPL's best manager to Ibrox tomorrow yet will only be able to shake his head in admiration at the man he admires most in the business, Walter Smith.
The Kilmarnock manager, who was yesterday named Clydesdale Bank Manager of the month for August, envies the way Rangers have bankrolled Smith to the tune of £9million since going out of Europe. Jefferies has spent just £150,000 and joked that he would have been fired if his team had suffered the nightmare of Kaunas.

Jefferies will hope to extend Kilmarnock's impressive start to the campaign of ten points from four games by eclipsing Smith in the top-of-the-table clash but is full of praise for the way Smith has rebounded from the Champions League exit with an impressive recruitment campaign that saw one of the new arrivals, Pedro Mendes, scoring in the Old Firm derby success against Celtic 12 days ago.

"If you want a reason why Rangers and Celtic will always occupy first and second place in our league, just look at the way they rebound after going out of Europe," stated Jefferies. "The one thing both of those clubs can do, is remedy the situation right away. Rangers can spend £9m on quality players. If I had a bad start to the season, I would get the sack – or maybe £900 to spend.

"That is the difference between us. Walter gave me a call after the Old Firm game and congratulated me for our win at Dundee United the day before. He was joking about us both being top and saying they would be ready for us."

The long-serving manager, who is now in his seventh season at Rugby Park, is actually full of praise for the way Michael Johnson, the chairman, and the board, scraped together enough cash to sign striker Conor Sammon from Derry City and Italian midfielder Manuel Pascali from Parma. Only Sammon cost a fee but Jefferies feels that cash-strapped Kilmarnock are actually reaping the reward for last season's torrid campaign when he had to blood a number of youngsters because the club would not break its strict budget.

"I had to put in a lot of boys because of our injury problems and it was sink or swim," reflected Jefferies. "I knew if they failed, I would have nothing left for this season and that the re-building process would be even bigger. We finished the season quite well, which left our fans happier and then the chairman let me bring in Pascali, Sammon and Gavin Skelton. Having new faces around the dressing room, who are keen to do well, rubs off on the other players."

Jefferies refuses to get too excited about Kilmarnock's position but after toiling at the other end of the table last year, and finishing 11th, the manager is keen to embrace the change in belief around the club. "Winning at Tannadice was a huge results for us," he said. "Everyone had been tipping them to do well, but we defended well there and put together a move for our second goal that had eight passes.

"I told the players that if they can go to Dundee Untied and win, they can go anywhere. Celtic and Rangers have had tough games at Tannadice but now we are going into a vital period against the Old Firm with confidence. First we go to Ibrox and then Celtic come to Rugby Park.

"On the evidence of the way we have been playing recently, Rangers will have to play well to beat us. Everyone of my players believes in this team. If Kilmarnock makes the top six in any season, that is a great achievement because of our budget and having to sell players like Kris Boyd and Steven Naismith to Rangers. Two years ago, we finished fifth and that was great in a time when we were cutting staff and wages. Now the chairman has given me a little money to use because he knew we needed it.

"We are not getting carried away. It is just four games but if we get something out of the two games with the Old Firm, that will help our progress. Sometimes you worry about your players when they go to Ibrox, there is a fear factor, but that is not the case now."

How come Jeffries is manager of the month?
Rangers are top of the league and after thrahing the beggars 4-2 at the piggery, Wattie should have been picking up the award.
Mind you, I suppose it'll be the only trophy Jeffries ever picks up.

Rangers just re-invested the money they got for Cuellar - net spending zero. But good of Jim Jeffries to get his excuses in early.

#3 - Smith manager of the month? On the back of the Kaunus debacle :-D
JJ is a worth winner. Joint top of the league with 5 clean sheets (including the CIS cup) is an excellent start for a team with Killie's resources.
We're big outsiders tomorrow but our away record against Rangers is actually better than out home one. Hopefully we'll employ the same 4-5-1 that served us well at Tannadice.

What on earth makes Pundit thinks Jeffries never gets the credit he deserves?

Everyone interested in Scottish football who posssesses an IQ gives him heaps of credit for what he has achieved.

On a modest budget, he produced a Hearts side which outshone a Rangers outfit with players such as Laudrup. With even less money, he has made Kilmarnock professional and has them performing regularly to a high standard.

The only other people in the Scottish game who deserve such credit are the turnstyle operators at Ibrox who have to watch the lowest echelons of our society pass them be every second Saturday.

Congratulations JJ. I have always said that the Managerial awards should be handicapped. How would Smith or Strachan get on with a wage budget of less than £1.5m?

Killie have won six times at Greyskull since returning to the SPL, seven if you include the cup final, and JJ should be given the September MOTM award if he adds to that tally tomorrow.

Speaking of Tallys. Pasca is coming to get you Rangers!

Jeffries certainly deserves Manager of the Month. Even with all their expensive defenders, Rangers have conceded a fair few goals this season. Kilmarnock have conceded none. Admittedly they haven't played against the Old Firm yet - but you can only do well against who you have been drawn to play. If being top of the SPL is the criterion for Manager of the Month, then there is no judging to do for the award. Jeffries has taken pretty much the same squad as last year's and made them watertight at the back. The teamwork has been great - and that is down to the manager, not individual genius from players.

It'll be an interesting tussle at Ibrox - just so long as they don't use Boydie against us, we could be in with our best chance of at least a point. And we deserve to get 3 points from there for a change.

Agree Jeffries is a good manager (with the exception of his time at Bradford City) but can't see Rangers
losing tomorrow. With a recent head to head league record of 8 wins, 1 draw a 1 defeat (and that in a meaningless end of season game ) in recent years and Pedro running the midfield I think we will be too strong. With Miller and Lafferty most likely injured
Boyd is a certainty to play, and always seems to score against his old club.

#6 I didn't see Hearts outshine Rangers in the 96 Cup Final, Bian Laudrup's display in the 5-1 win being on of the best I have ever seen.

And there are no turnstyle operators at Ibrox, we are in the 21st century and have smartcards.

I agree that JJ deserves the MotM. He's a grafter and does well with very little in the way of cash. I don't fully agree with his assesment of the money WS has to spend. It's the cash from Carlos, pure and simple.....

They should have with-held the manager of the month this month.

Way too early in the season.

Killie will get sucked into bottom 6 obscurity and the ReaRangers 1 result bubble will be busted soon.

Anyway...Jeffries is a dour pain in the narse and "Walter" is a treacherous dawg.

Treachery should never be rewarded.

3# 3 words, Blue Tinted Glasses!

12# Get a grip a shake yourself you retarted sad excuse for a humanbeing.

JJ has done wonders in his career pulling our cracking players with so little resources at both Hearts and Killie, JJ & BB are great coaches who always get the best out of there players, last season was so poor because of the injury crisis which occured and i really felt for Killie last season because of this.

Well done JJ you really deserved this award!

How many other managers on a very restricted budget have beaten Rangers in a Cup Final? Yoy won't need all your fingers to count this one. The answer is - none. He got lots and lots and heaps of credit for that. Don't forget also that were in not for the OF referees, he would also have picked up the Premier League title. Remember the Hearts guy who got sent off for looking at Albertz at Ibrox? It was a decision which had to be taken off course.

Hearts were 2-1 up at the time.

nobody mentions the time hearts had so many players sent off at Ibrox the game was in danger of being abandoned, a bizarre spectacle where players where getting mauled by their opponents and then begging the ref NOT to book them, wouldnt see that atthe stydome
