An 80th-minute strike from Kilmarnock substitute Jamie Hamill gave the Ayrshire side all three points against struggling Hibernian in their Clydesdale Bank Premier League opener at Rugby Park.
The visitors went in to the game without a win in eight pre-season games, their plight highlighted when former Killie striker Colin Nish missed a first-half sitter.

The Easter Road club probably thought they had done enough to earn a point but wit
h the game heading for a draw, Hamill, on five minutes earlier for Simon Ford, drove a David Fernandez pass into the corner of the net from 25 yards out.

Before a ball had been kicked this season, Hibs boss Mixu Paatelainen found himself under pressure.

Whispers of dressing discontent at Easter Road had grown in volume in the build-up to the new season and although the visitors looked purposeful at times, this result will simply add to his woes.
Killie seemed out of sorts early on and the erratic-looking debutant Manuel Pascali was booked in the fifth minute for a clumsy foul on David van Zanten..

In the 16th minute Nish had an easy chance to open the scoring after Steven Fletcher had robbed Hay but the former Killie striker trundled his shot from 16 yards straight at Alan Combe.

Moments later, Combe made a fine save from Fletcher after the Scotland striker had turned Killie defender Ford 10 yards from goal with a clever flick.

The game swung from end to end with plenty of crunching tackles to keep the crowd animated but Killie were dealt a blow when defender Ryan O'Leary had to be replaced by Frazer Wright, following a clash with
Nish.

Slowly Kilmarnock began to work themselves into the game and Garry Hay's fine cross from wide on the left found no takers but Hibs remained a threat on the counter.

In the 31st minute Killie's talented playmaker Mehdi Taouil showed himself for the first time in the game when he picked up a Jamie Fowler pass, skipped past Hibs defender Chris Hogg and fired in a tremendous right-footed drive from 30 yards which visiting keeper Andy McNeil did well to tip over the bar.

Kilmarnock finished the half strongly but just before the break Combe was in a good position to deal with a decent shot from Hibs substitute Ross Chisholm, who had replaced the injured Steven Thicot just after the half-hour mark.

The second half continued in an open fashion with both sides showing intent to go for the win, albeit with little finesse on show.

In the 54th minute, after Pascali had brought down Dean Shiels on the edge of the box to concede a free-kick, Fletcher curled his shot harmlessly over the bar.

At the other end, from a Taouil corner, Keenan cleared Wright's header off the line seconds before Paul Hanlon fired over Combe's bar with a powerful drive from 25 yards.

On the hour mark, Filipe Morais replaced the tiring O'Brien but three minutes later it was Nish, standing in a packed Killie six-yard box, who unintentionally blocked skipper Rob Jones' goal-bound header from a Shiels corner.

In the 67th minute Killie midfielder Craig Bryson broke away from Shiels, took a few steps and hammered a 35-yard drive inches over.
Occasional chances came along at both ends.

In the 73rd minute Combe pulled another fine save from Morais, beating away a powerful 20-yard drive, and moments later McNeil had to rush from his goal to block a close-range drive from Danny Invincibile.

But in the 80th minute Hamill picked up a Fernandez pass 25 yards from goal and drove a low shot past McNeil and into the corner of the net.
Four minutes of injury-time were added and, with Hibs piling forward, Invincibile wasted a couple of half-chances to increase the home side's lead.

Very poor result against a poor side. Shows that the team has not turned any kind of corner. I am not looking forward to Falkirk next week.

Who's it gonna be? ,

Nish- Rubbish
O' Brian- Scared to touch the ball
Hogg- spells found hiding. Booked when he makes an appearance
Morais- As bad as O'Brian
Fletcher- far too 1 footed, will never get a call up to a Euro team
Mc Neil- Every corner given to the opposition has me biting my nails- might as well be a penalty
Jones- Tried hard but found out of position too often.
Thicot- unsure why he was subbed.
Keena- spent the game covering for Jones and Hogg.
This is going to be a long season and bottom six beckons. I hope I am proved wrong.

Nish misses an early sitter and where is benji at, sent out on loan. To be fair i didnt see the game so i cant comment on Nish's overall performance but after our inability to score at the end of last season and during the close season, it just amazes me we let go a forward who has shown he has the potential to get 20 goals in a season. The team is low on quality at the moment, barring fletcher, shiels and zemmama so cant understand letting benji go when we have so few proven goalscorers. It looks like it could be a long season...

In fact i dont think flats will ever be built at tynecastle - Credit crunch an all that !!

Where have all the Hibs optimists gone? And where did they get that optimism. The only 'positive' note for Hibs since April, including SPL and Intertoto, was a friendly draw against mighty Raith Ravers.

Who else for Hibs? Even Yogi canny get his side to convert a seldom-earned penalty against Scotland's Shame.

12# - none whatsoever !!

A few years ago - killie were doing ok

motherwell should have been relegated a few years back

rangers are not doing to well

hearts - seem to have turned a wee corner

we been there many times b4 - and we will get out of the p1sh again !!

Hibs are P1sh - but - i still wont be a jambo for all the ale in gorgie !!!!!!

As an Edinburgh football supporter, albeit with Maroon leanings admittedly, I genuinely fret that the conveyor belt of talent from the Carrots may have temporarily dried up and with Mixu in charge you may not have a manager who can recognise a 'nugget' in then transfer market.

15

mcaitchi,

hibs 09/08/2008 20:09:20
15# - A Cany Agree with u more !!

I also think that the "conveyor belt" was rather Small and - we will or would - only get a few "Nuggets" every few years or so !!

Hibs get a half dozen or so - And what do Hibs Do - Sell them like hot cakes !!!

ok 4.4 million for brown was well worked - he is worth 2million at most - HIBS should have put 2million back into the team !!!!!!!

I wish BOTH the Edinburgh Teams would stop selling !!

#16 Ain't going to happen but the skill of it for our teams is the ability of our managers to get players, either through the academy or from the market place, to ensure enough talent to prosper. Lates face it, Edinburgh is a beautiful city, very prosperous and Scotlands capital so why wouldn't you want to be here, apart from the wages we don't pay!

Maybe The "Weather" !!!

Edinburgh - Its - Not like real big City !!!

Nothing like rome / barcelona / madrid or maybe even amsterdam !!

Why cant Hibs or even hearts attract the numbers in football - that even Doncaster Rovers GET !!! ffs

Nice tidy balance sheet, a hungry manager in mixu, an "owned" cow shed complete with lawn and the impending buy a brick towards the funding of the last bit of stickle-brick stand what else could the hobos want. Maybe the manager taking phone call advice from Frank Souzee hahahaha

1st division beckons for mixu i have a bad feeling the only way is down, terrible to lose our easy derby points

26-cow shed?

After a recent visit to what you call the cow shed,i was stunned by this fantastic facility. Its 100 per cent owned by the club ublike a renatl of some university football pitches.Stae of the art facility but as a jambo you wouldnt have an idea of that.

As for the cow shed dont you mean the tynecastle main stand, that thing should have gone with wardlaw and bauld.

Lets have a look at the positions at the end of the season..remember all of the other so called new managers also won their first game, lets see how that clown does next week at err ummm oh ibrox!!

That stadium is a tatal embarassment to scottish football.

petrie to go aswell as mixu because petrie is only signing the small managers like mixu because he wants to keep the money to him self and not putting it into the club he just listens to the fans opinions then maybe i would give the guy a another chance just give the club money to build on the team not on the staduim. the team comes 1st if we dont get better football then the fans wont come then theres no piont in buildin on the new stand when we cant even get the stands filled. GET PETRIE OUT NOW!!!!
