Kinloch still treasures shot at glory

AS COOL now as he was 47 years ago when confronted with the pivotal moment in his career, former Hibs player Bobby Kinloch modestly summarises the dramatic late penalty which humbled Barcelona 3-2 at Easter Road by saying: "I had nothing to lose and everything to gain."
Kinloch had not even expected to take the 85th-minute penalty, and only a nerve-ridden plea from regular taker Sammy Baird thrust him from the role of bystander to central figure in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup quarter-final tie on 22 February, 1961.

Kinloch had sought refuge in the centre circle while the Barca players harangued and jostled the German referee Johannes Malka, their fury having boiled over when the official pointed to the spot after Jonny McLeod was scythed down in the box.

As the minutes ticked by and the terrified referee, assisted by pitchside police officers, tried to restore order, Kinloch sat on top of the match ball within his safe haven of the centre circle. The surreal scene took another twist when Baird sidled up to him and begged him to take responsibility for the spot-kick.

"I was just sitting there, watching how fast the referee could run, when I heard a voice saying 'Hey Bobby, you take it'.

"All of a sudden I was up there, a relatively unknown player, needing to slot the penalty to beat Barcelona. I had no idea what the other players thought of me taking such an important penalty or what the crowd made of it all.

"I was in an enviable position I suppose. Because 13 minutes had elapsed between the kick being awarded and actually taken, nobody in the whole ground expected me to score.

"My only concern was to make sure it hit the back of the net, and thankfully it did."

Kinloch might have expected a pat on the back from the Hibs chairman after sealing a 3-2 win and a 7-6 aggregate victory, but with the away-goals rule not yet in existence he claims that Harry Swan had been rubbing his hands with glee at the prospect of a money-spinning decider back in the Nou Camp. "When we came off the park we were absolutely delirious," he said. "We were in the bath, singing and celebrating, when Harry Swan came in and slated me for costing the club another trip to Barcelona."

Swan would get his wish of a lucrative third European tie when the Easter Road team drew home and away with Roma in the semi-finals, but it was to end in a crushing 6-0 midsummer defeat for a hopelessly ill-prepared side who were in the middle of their pre-season.

The rout in Rome was an anti-climax to a fine European campaign, but the memory of Hibs' triumph over Barcelona and Kinloch's contribution is indelible.

"It was a massive, massive result for Hibs and it helped raised the profile of the club," said Kinloch, who left Easter Road the following year to go part-time with Morton.

Barcelona will visit the capital next month to meet Hibs once again and Kinloch, now 73, was back at Easter Road yesterday to promote the pre-season friendly at Murrayfield on 24 July.

He is an admirer of the Spanish game and he believes that Hibs' top goalscorer Steven Fletcher – linked in recent months with Real Madrid – has the potential to flourish if given the privilege of a move to La Liga. "He may shine in a fairly average team, but if he was in a team surrounded by significantly better players then he might just do well. I think he's a very good player and still very young," said Kinloch, who still attends every Hibs home game and lives in the city two doors away from Easter Road legend Lawrie Reilly. Kinloch himself got a taste of football abroad before and after Hibs, playing for the Combined Services team in Malaya during his stint in the RAF, then playing in the North American league with Toronto – a move that led him down a different career path.

"The money was really bad, so you needed a second job, and I joined the police handgun team as a crack shot," he said. "I ended up in a gunfight with a Detroit gangster and won, and when I went home that night my wife had written my resignation and cut out an advert for a job in IT."

Kinloch's days as a sharp shooter may be over, but he will always treasure the moment his most accurate shot of all electrified Easter Road.

• Tickets for Hibs v Barcelona, at Murrayfield on 24 July, are on sale at the Hibernian FC ticket office or from www.scottishrugby.org, priced from £25.

I hadn't realised that our city rivals' last moment of glory was as recent as this.

I will have to revise all my negative opinions now.

I was at that game and still remember that penalty. The rest of the game is a bit hazy though. Great days.
Kiwidoug. Your problem is that Hearts just don't have a history like ours. You have never had games at this level at any time in your clubs' history. Remember, Barcelona were considered the best team in the world at that time.

Well said #2. As we sing, "do you know your history". Saying that if Hertz carry on the way they are going, they will indeed have their place in history... as a footnote!

I was a student in Edinburgh at the time an was at the game up on the hgh terracing towards the penalty goal end. It was one of the most esciting games I ever saw and the Barcelona players were an utter disgrace. Am I correct in saying that this was the first time Barca had been beaten in Europe for many years? By the way does anyone know the attendance ofr the game<

Aw, poor wee bitter kiwidoug. Dont worry bud, I'm sure that Hearts have reached a European Semi Final havn't they? Havn't they?

Johnny Jambo,

#6 Lenny, was that a Semi?? I thought it was a Quarter Final wasn't it. and the other Semi final Hibs played in was one of the first European Cups when there were 4 INVITED teams and Hibs lost to Rheims.

Although I do agree that comments like #1 are unnecessary.
8

Johnny Jambo,

13/06/2008 09:18:17
and they lost the second leg of the Barcelona game as well didn't they??

Melly: According to the EN there was 50,000 there.

Busbyfh. As I said to Kiwidoug, Barcelona were considered to be the best team in the world at that time. We were considered to be the best team in the world as well when we beat Preston NE for the title.

We took part in the European Cup by invitation. Can you think why we were invited? Can you imagine Hearts ever being invited? This is what I mean by having a history Hearts have simply never operated at that level.
10

Johnny Jambo,

13/06/2008 09:31:06
#9 PP - I can see how a team who beats PNE would be considered the "Best in the World" and of course you can have two best teams in the work can't you.

Those days Hibs were invited and that is different from qualifying and as far as I can remember Hearts are the only Edinburgh Team to have finished high enough in the Scottish league to qualify for the CL.

I am not trying to score points here I am just saying that neither of the Edinburgh "big" teams have exactly covered themselves in glory as far as Europe is concerned over the years.

I was at Easter Road when Hibs played Barcalona and also when they played Real Madrid and won and I must admit they played very well in those games. But Hearts have had their glory nights in Europe as well.

Yep mate, it was a Qtr Final but they won it didnt they : ) They got beat in the Semi Final v Roma on a play off in Rome after two draws.

So yeah, 2 European Semi's for the Hibees!
12

Johnny Jambo,

13/06/2008 09:48:04
Hi Lenny, I must admit I thought they had lost overall, but reading here they lost in the Semi 6-0, and of course that was not the worst European defeat for a Scottish team.
Inter Cities Fairs Cup, now there was a tournament.

So guess you have the upper hand mate, we can't argue with the facts.

Great article, written by the founder of Mass Hibsteria, probably the greatest fanzine in the world.

PS - it'll be back next season, folks :-)
14

Lenny,

13/06/2008 10:03:07
Johnny Jambo, well it was the forerunner of the UEFA Cup. For the record, Hibs also got to the Qtr Final of the Cup Winners Cup. Not a bad European for such a wee team ; )
15

Johnny Jambo,

13/06/2008 10:17:11
Lenny, be fair I am not one for this "big" team "wee" team stuff. We are Edinburgh representatives in the SPL and we need each other. We have different history some good some not so good, but the importantthing is that we must both continue to flourish and right now we are the team having the issues and we accept we need to get it sorted.
16

Lenny,

13/06/2008 10:19:43
Johnny Jambo,

Oh, I didnt mean to direct that wee team thing actually at you. I know you dont go in for that rubbish. Was more to the Jambo's who do call us the wee team but more than likely have no idea of our history.

17

Johnny Jambo,

13/06/2008 10:33:32
#17 np Lenny, I must admit the hibs older history is probably a bit better than ours but in recent times I don't think there has been much of a difference between the two teams, we have good seasons and we have not so good, but to be honest I think we should both be doing better to at least fight for the third place given the sizes of our clubs. and the fan bases we have compared to the rest of the SPL
18

Hibby Heapy,

13/06/2008 10:42:32
JJ and Lenny, will you two get a room!

By the way I agree with both of you. Here's to two strong Edinburgh teams not just one!
19

Johnny Jambo,

13/06/2008 11:11:01
#19 hear hear HH I want to see two strong teams in Edinburgh, well one a bit stronger than the other of course.
20

CPWilliam,

13/06/2008 11:42:11
JJ - This game was the second leg. The first leg in Spain ended 4 - 4.

Jam Tarts 1874,

On the Rebound 13/06/2008 12:32:05
#2. I am glad we don't have an history like the hobos, otherwise Hearts would be the wee team.

I think you will find that Hearts have been in a European QF much more recently than hibs and were very unlucky to go out to Bayern Munich on that occassion.

The Fairs Cup was a farce, it wasn't run by UEFA and was essentially an invitational tournamment.
22

Private Pike,

Hibs were officially the best team in the world in 1887 when they beat Preston North End for that title. Hearts at the time were trying for the unpteenth time to get Hibs banned from the league(A regular activity in the 19th Century for Hearts).

Hearts, to give them their due, have continued on in this mean spirited way ever since. Never troubling the administrators and statisticians of the world game that is football.

PS I note that although you lay claim to having achievements of your own to comppare with Hibs you are unable to provide details.
23

Lenny,

13/06/2008 13:15:59
Jam Tarts 1874, you are just an @rse. The likes of you ruin this site.

Fact is Hearts ARE a wee team. Everyone other than Hearts fans know it. The only big teams in Scotland are the Old Firm.

By the way, Celtic, Rangers, Hibs, Aberdeen, Dun Utd, DUNDEE and DUmFERMLINE have all got further in Europe than your stupid wee team. Big team my white ass.

Having a go at the wrong person dude, JJ is one of those rare Jambos with a brain.
25

Johnny Jambo,

#23 PP I have made no such claims unless you are reading something into my post which I never intended.

All I said was that Barcelona were deeemed to be the best team in the world and you are saying there are claims that Hibs were the best team in the world, there cannot be 2 best teams in the world at the same time.

If there was an official statement saying Hibs were the best then I would accept that if I saw the evidence, what I can't understand is why would beating PNE make Hibs the best team in the world, the best in the UK i can understand but "the world".

As I also said I am not trying to score points, it matters not as it was a long time ago.
26

Johnny Jambo,

13/06/2008 13:22:32
Lenny, there are a few of us mate.
27

Johnny Jambo,

13/06/2008 13:25:53
JT 1874 Lenny does have a point about those teams.

Celtic Rangers and Aberdeen have actually won European Comps and the others have all reached Semi's
28

Private Pike,

13/06/2008 13:41:32
JJ Back in 1887 the FA and the SFA were surely about the only Associations in world football.

The two associations put forward their best teams to decide the "World Championship" and Hibs won.

Now that you've made me explain this I'm so bored with myself, everyone else probably feels the same, that I'm off to do some work.

Just heard an interview conducted by the BBC, our UK national broadcasting corporation, with one of the home international team managers. This is the second time this week that this home international team manager has been interviewed. I look forward to hearing an interview conducted by the BBC, our UK national broadcasting corporation, with the rest of the other home international team managers. An interview with our own home nations team manager would not go amiss. This would show that we are all equal in this United Kingdom.
