Published Date: 08 July 2008
AT A time of year when the majority of workers are flushed with the holiday spirit, football managers are engaged in the least appealing aspect of their job, the business of operating as both buyer and seller in the transfer market. It is an obligation that is especially gruelling for those in charge of clubs with aspirations to high achievement at home and abroad.
And the system, complicated by the rampant commercialisation of the game and the ever-growing influence of agents over the past two decades, has become so polluted that it moved the Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, to bitter condemnation at the weekend.

The great Frenchman's criticism was prompted primarily by the conviction that the free-for-all has turned players into mercenaries. He talks from first-hand experience, facing the prospect of losing Emmanuel Adebayor and Aleksandr Hleb to Barcelona, with both men claiming they will earn more in Catalunya than in north London.

"If I had the power to change anything in football, it would be the transfer system, which makes mercenaries of players," said Wenger. "If they are bad ones, they stay. If they are good, they think only of leaving".

To some observers, this may sound a bit rich, coming from a man who has proved himself peerless in the art of unloading jaded superstars – Emmanuel Petit, Marc Overmars, Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry are prime examples – at prices far above their true value and acquiring young talents who can be sold later for colossal profits (q.v. Anelka, Nicolas).

But Wenger's record serves merely to ratify his distress and highlight the grotesqueness of a situation in which even clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United – the latter striving to keep hold of Cristiano Ronaldo – can be both predator and prey.

The experiences of Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford this summer should help bring some perspective to the operations of Scottish clubs, most specifically the two strongest and wealthiest, Celtic and Rangers. While it is reported that Ferguson will have to fight off an offer of upwards of £70million from Real Madrid for Ronaldo (plus after-tax wages of £150,000 a week to the player) and Wenger is likely to receive a bid of £30million for Adebayor, Gordon Strachan and/or Walter Smith are accused of signing an expensive flop if a player such as Massimo Donati, at a cost of £1.3million, fails to impress.

Even the most extravagant fee, of course, is no guarantee of value for money. It was widely acknowledged that, when Ferguson paid Lazio £28million for Juan Sebastian Veron in 2001, he had bought the world's most accomplished midfielder. When, after three largely undistinguished seasons at Old Trafford, the Argentine joined Chelsea for half the amount United had paid, Ferguson – not surprisingly, given the nature of fans and certain sections of the media was accused of gross incompetence.

Veron would be among the most extravagant examples of a tall reputation disappearing under the burden of expectation, but the history of the game is littered with others, certainly enough to have tempered the tendency of supporters to rush to pre-judgment of the capabilities of recruits – either approvingly or dismissively – before they have even been brought to trial.

There has also been sufficient chronicling in recent years of the economic weakness of Celtic and Rangers in relation to the most populous and richest European countries. The Parkhead club may have returned momentous financial figures in terms of turnover and profit over the past few seasons, but they are impressive only in a Scottish context and nothing like weighty enough to allow Strachan (this applies also to Smith at Ibrox) to choose his prospective signings from anything other than the middle-to-lower tiers of available merchandise.

In an interview in The Scotsman at the start of last season, Strachan concisely articulated his challenge. "If great players have, say, five assets, we are working largely with twos and threes. As coaches, what we have to do is try improve the threes into fours and the twos into threes".

Neither the history of expensive failures nor the evidence of the Old Firm's financial limitations, however, seems to have impacted on those supporters who continue to clamour for "big-name", expensive signings. Indeed, they appear, disappointingly, to remain in the majority.

In a newspaper 'hotline' yesterday, a Celtic fan, clearly agitated by the apparent inactivity of Strachan in the market, said that, despite reports of numerous names on the manager's list, nothing seems to be getting done.

"I hope," he added, "we're not spending our time haggling behind the scenes over cash instead of getting moves completed."

This kind of naivety seems misplaced in the present day. Of course Strachan and Peter Lawwell, like managers and chief executives everywhere, will be haggling over cash. They would be failing in their remit if they were not.

The complexities of the modern market, often involving numerous interested parties (among whom the player himself frequently has the least influential voice), can make the formerly straightforward business of buying a player difficult and protracted. But it is underpinned by one universal truth: disappointment is in-built and no club, no matter how resourceful, ever gets everybody they want.

30mil for one season wonder Adebayor, Arsenal take the money and fly the numpty out on a private jet paid for by yourselves.

They have probably got a decent reserve who could score the goals he did.

Every team in the EPL is guaranteed more money in a season, win lose, come nowhere or get relegated, than the OF can earn. Not sure of the Championship's cash but reckon it is also above the SPL.
Have to laugh at the bampots like rasclattinoff, on here from midnight to midnight spewing hate, then calling others all the biggoted terms under the sun.

I know it’s customary for Celtic and Rangers fans to denigrate any signings the 'other lot' make but I would like to make a few points about Miller.

Every Celtic fan I know respects the guys application, professionalism and dedication to the teams objective on any given match day and most of all we really hoped he could come good during his time at CP.
Thinking about it, he stands out in my head as a Celtic CF who was given more time than usual bearing in mind his many awful misses.

I like the idea some Rangers fans are peddling that although he 'may' not score that many for them he will create chances for others to capitalise on.

C'mon lets get real here. Yes he has superb pace but that’s diminishing every year, but his first touch is terrible, his link up play is non existent, his runs off the ball are often pointless, his hold up play is sub standard ........need I go on?
How on earth will KM create chances for others you guys only know.

Lets be very clear what you are getting is a guy who can run very fast and who will burst a gut for the cause but what your not getting is an accomplished forward player.

Sad but very true IMO.

BTW
Since 99% of bears felt he was a cra-p player while he played for the Celts how come he is now a good player?
Strange mindset.

I would like to see MORE young talent come through at CP and if we are going emulate clubs like Ajax and attemtp to be a thorn in the side of the super rich clubs at CL level then we need to get the fecking coaching right and bring forward more McGeadys.

I´ve read with interest the comments over the last few weeks re miller. I am one who did´n´t want him back at Ibrox, not because he has played at Parkhead but because he´s not worth the money.# 108 ...he had apont to prove at Celtic and failed why would he succeed at Ibrox? I hope you´re right about the number of goals he´ll score...but I doubt it! # 112 I agree totally with your points.
I have to say that given the choice I would prefer Novo but really neither should be in the frame.

I must confess to getting a bit pis*ed off sometimes about the idea that we are still a work in progress re getting the coaching right.

Celtic, Rangers, Scotland Derry City and the bloody dog have known now for a few decades about the Dutch/Ajax system and how that country punched above their weight due to proper effective coaching and this is very evident from the players they produce.

Why cant we just do what they are doing and instead of McGeady being the odd one out of a youth/reserve team that has his type of ball control, they should all be at that level. Dont ye think?

We are restricted in who we can buy from outwith the EU as so many players need work permits in UK and don´t in Holland, Portugal etc.Rangers had this problem when they brought Jardel to Ibrox and couldn´t get him a work permit....he then signed for Porto, Sporting , Galatasaray and was the top scorer every season....until he found bevvy!

Mr Gibbons is rather stating the obvious here, which is neither of the OF can afford top talent. And as to the mercenary tag - 'twas ever thus.

I think Celtic are trying to sign younger talent from European clubs - Donatti and Sno spring to mind. However, I don't see this strategy working. If the youngster's any good, the club won't want to sell. If he's not, as is the case with both Sno and Donatti, the quicker the club can offload for a fee, the better. Celtic may say it's worth a gamble. However, neither of the OF make too many mistakes when it comes to selling/releasing youngsters they don't think are up to standard. I don't think Celtic should expect other, bigger, clubs to mistakenly sell them someone who's going to be any good.

Answer ? Get the (continental, English, Welsh, Irish) youngster into your own youth set up as early as possible, as you would with local lads. Not easy but this way, you spread the risk, because you're never going to populate your first team with a whole load of guys born within a 30 mile radius of Glasgow. Not these day you won't.

Donatti - 1.3m quid. Press often add wages to the transfer fee and call it a "deal".

Unfortunately the competitive nature for which we are known plays a big part in it. In youth football games are played on full size pitches with full size goals. Naturally talented players are then overlooked for the big, fast, strong boys who can cope with this better. This serves them well up to a certain level but they then dont have the skills to progress further. Just try playing the smaller, less developed, but more talented boys. Results suffer and parents etc shout for the big boys to come back on. How many fights are there on the touchlines between parents?

In Holland the emphasis is placed more on technique than winning with smaller pitches and goals. Until the whole way youth football is run and thought of is changed things i fear will remain the same.

IMHO we still do a very poor job at nurturing young talented players through the age groups and ensuring that by the time they become pros they have all the technical requirements of a modern day footballer.

Remember the Youth World Cup in Canada last year were the Scotland team was totally outclassed by the Japanese. The fecking Japanese. All they do at high school is play baseball and do judo and still they looked like they had come through the ranks in Brasil compared to the donkeys on show with Scotland ( many of them were CFC and RFC kids).

More quailty effort is needed now!

Re. the WC U 20 last year in Canada, Scotland were outclassed by every team they played. After playing a full season with their clubs the team did not even look fit when compared to other sides. I know they did not play for a month but the team looked very disorganised on the park. Or again was it poor management.

Some brilliant young players on show, the kid Dos Santos that went to Spurs is one to watch and just turned 19.

129 - 26 when he signed, hardly old, should have all of his best years ahead of him. But the age at which Donatti moved just proves my point. You may get a 32 year old seasoned professional on the cheap, and he may do a good job for a couple of years. However, you're not going to get any continental side to sell you a young player who's any good on the cheap. If you think you're going to make him a better player, you've got another think coming.

Re Sno - we'll assume you're correct and that Sno plays well for Holland under-whatevers. Why do YOU think this is the case ?

re the talent coming through - i wouldn't be too pessimistic - i was at the england v scoland schoolboys match at wembley in May - OK we wur humped 2-0, but missed a pen and had a good goal disallowed (same old...). Anyway, what struck me was how we got the ball down and played football on the deck - can't remember his name but the Scottish captain skated the MoM award. In contrast, england had a team of 6 footers - 17 year olds FFS - honestly, they had a few inches on all our players. I think the future is worse for england - long ball to a crouch type figure, wait for a set piece (1 goal was from a corner) and charge.....oh, and the scots celebs won 2-0 - darren jackson (celeb? scored a belter!!

Bosco and Daillyman. This debate about lack of skill in Scottish youngsters has been going on for as long as I can remember. No one really knows the answer.

Does every other football nation(apart from the English who have the same basic problem and the Scandinavians who copy the English) have lads who are intrinsically more skillful ? Or is it that we are so insular and/or stubborn that we have failed to learn from the coaching methods of those countries who invariably produce footballers who are "comfortable on the ball" ? My money's on the latter

Celtic need another striker for competition because if Skippy or JVOH get injured were in trouble. The midfield is fine with WGS inspired Robson signing, a revitalized Brown, Hartley and Naka, as well as a maturing McGeady I'm quite happy. The defense also improved over the season, so for me one new striker and a possible extra midfielder, assuming we get rid of Graveson and or Donati and Sno. Riordon and Baldi can also go, the latter because he is all heart but has not improved skill wise since MO left, and the former because sadly he’ a lost cause because he was not willing to put in the effort. I certainly wish there was a clear out of players.

I don't see anything yet in Gers signings that should frighten the Celts.

The Evening Times suggesting that Celtic are close to signing Samaras, which if true highlights the rewards from a patient approach to the transfer market.

Celtic have always been keen to sign Samaras but the price and wage demands were prohibitive : basically if Celtic agreed £3m plus £25k a week , this deal could have been tied up long ago.

I honestly believe that £3m is a bit high for Sami, and £25k a week far too high.

The SSM has been trying to knock everyone down and if we land him for £2m-£2.5m on around £15k a week, it will be good business for Celtic.

#164 As a bluenose, I also condemn the cheap shots celebrating child abuse, BUT unlike you, I also condemn those who are on the "other side" and also partake in this to the same, if not worse degree.
For what its worth, football in this country suffers from a huge lack of leadership in juvenile and under stages. There are (relatively) probably enough volunteers involved in the game to have us produce many terrific wee players as long as they are under on e banner, not fragmented by different boys clubs, codes, organistaions etc.
There is a huge "Peoples Front of Judea" problem today.
For me the principle of what we should be looking for is being able toidentify and coach boys from the ages of 6 through to say 11/12, initially introducing these youngsters to the very basic skills and techniques which are further developed as they progress through a recognised and common coaching programme. The boys should be able to "sign" to senior teams, but not exclusively play/train with them (which I believe happens in some cases. The focus should be within a non-competitive environment although as the kids develop, the emphasis needs to change to illustrate more of what football is actually about. EG 6-9 is 60% on ball skills/passing techniques, 40% 3 or 4 a side games, stopping regulalrly to gude the youngsters on each and every option open to them in terms "you should have tried to pass there" or "who do you think you should mark" etc etc right through the ages, opening them up to slightly more in terms of tactics, 7 a side games with no goals being scored but teams rewarded for retaining possession for 10 or more passes etc etc.
We are throwing the baby out with the bathwater as we let the SPL/SFA have absolute control over things but never back it up with real investment, real effort and real incentives to the vast majority of teams and coaches (those with notrhing to do with the senior game)
126

Excellent point re " recognised and common coaching programme"

Too many well intentioned but ill prepared dads out coaching with no real weight of knowledge behind them, and im one of them.

What the SFA and FAI should do, btw i have passed this onto the FAI Regional coaches, is to develope a 'manual' of sorts combined with interactive online drills etc that is the template for what coaches should be doing at a certain age level at any given club.

The GAA does that here in Ireland and so does the Rugby people and it makes complete sense. Some coaches work on heading and some leave it until the kid is nearly in his teens. Too much hit and miss at this level.
Fotball coaching needs to be done professionally at all levels and the people at the top should get their act together and do the job right.

177 - Celtic aint a selling club...if we were, McGeady would probably top the Hutton TX.

Regarding youth football. There are definite signs of it changing. It will change at the very younger levels as you now see more and more football clubs and associations get involved almost from the age kids are walking.

As these kids become more used to the subtle coaching they receive at a younger age, they will be less inclined to put up with the garbage they get from the frustrated "track suit" manager who runs these teams currently. You know the sort, picks his own boy first and screams murder at the rest of the kids.

It will take time, but the effort is there.

to add to 181 - thats not to say I am not a fan of the occasional blood and snotters game, but this should start from about 16+ after they have learned what the ball is actually for.

134

Stanley,

08/07/2008 14:59:12
#182.Actually, On reading my post I actually forgot to mention the single biggest and most important point. There needs to be a huge leap of faith amongst the hierarchy who run the juvenile ranks, that ALL football should be as non competitive as possible. This needs to filter down to the guys who run teams but can only work if these self same guys are empowered to promote skill and awareness amongst the kids, as a first and only lesson. Competitiveness can be fostered by the more senior teams (12+) but we are losing some real potential in 6 - 12 year olds and its through a shrug shoulders know better attitude with the gusy at the top I'm afraid (easy target but in this case warranted imho)
The key here is to empower. There has to be a shift change of learning in football where the emphasis is on training, improving standards and ensuring that every single kid (boys and girls) leaves a training programme, better than when they started. They should (as you said JR) be at least better than when they started. No matter how good bad or indifferent that may be. The good players will be picked up and I suspect that this point is where problems will start trying to keep the ethos of non competition alive.
Ideal world for me? Every kid up to the age of 12 (and more importantly their parents) choosing every time to have their kid improved in a non competitive environment without the fear of failure hanging over them all the time.
I keep saying "competition" and by that I mean telling the kids that winning is everything (almost) Thats where you see under 10's asking a goalkeeper to h_ump a ball as far up the park as possible and for all the kids to chase the ball and hopefully score. That should be outlawed. Goalkeepers kicking should be outlawed (for example) coming within 10 yards of a player who has just received the ball (thrown) from a keeper should be outlawed for wee kids...(for 5 seconds)
There are so many things that could and should work but the closed shop doe

If, as expected, he strikes out again on his third, he should be progressed passed knighthood status and proclaimed a human deity for fooling as many people as he has.

Personally, I think Alex Smiths performance at the Dons in the early 90's when he win the 2 domestic trophies in the one season surpassed Walter Nosurnames last season. Walter had the greater resources.

Smaller parks, smaller teams, shorter games and time spent drilling in the fact that a defence splitting pass does not have to be a 40 yard lob and a sprint to the ball first.

Rangers and Celtic are nothing clubs in the context of world football, which is why they cant attract top players.
In recent times we have seen Gascoigne, Laudrup, Van Bronkhurst, De Boer, Numan, Gattusso, Larsson, Albertz etc applying their craft in Scotland, but those days are gone.
Now the OF must buy from the basement and hope that what they get is someone on his way to the first floor of a 10 story ladder.

Amidst the most disgraceful headlines, SS recently played in the UEFA Cup final, although in fairness they were torn apart and made to look like amateurs...at football that is.
Passed masters at thuggery, 'opeless at football.

Still, I think 'nobodies' is a bit strong.

Celtic are well known throughout Europe, and for all the right reasons : do quite well in the CL having lost only once at home in thr group stage (and that was against the eventual winners), passionate and well behaved fans and a magnificent stadium which in a poll came second only to anfield when players were asked to state the best stadium that they had ever played in.

Or Sir Walter of Manchester ....noo that would be funny
185

Sir Minty Moonbeams, Casino Royale,

08/07/2008 19:43:52
Walter has Boyd, Cousin, Darseville and Naismith.

So what does Walter do ? Try to find long term replacements for Weir and Dailly ?

Nope.

Buy a creative midfield player that might transform SS from dirge to dashing ?

Nope.

Hmmm...A good right back to take over from Broadfeet ?

Nope.

Alright, I give up.

Walter went out and bought three dodgy strikers.

Whit ?????????????????????????????

Three dodgy strikers...you use the term strikers loosely - how many goals between them last four seasons? More or less than McDonald has scored in one season with the Champions.
189

Swordsman,

Dublin 08/07/2008 19:48:17
Tim...Seemingly Mad Max loved to be stroked around the Bahookie with a whip to inflict pain whilst reciting "Germanic" style language...Surely a season ticket to the Club Deck would be cheaper?
190

Sir Minty Moonbeams, Casino Royale,

08/07/2008 19:48:37
I'm hoping we get big Sami for a sensible fee and sensible wage terms, the roma left back and the Auxerre centre half.

Sami and the Auxerre bloke should cost £6m-£7m and the Roma player is a loan deal.

If those three signings come off, I'll be delighted.

Aye, I agree.

He's worth a dabble at £1.5M & 15k tops pw, but only if there are no better deals out there.

He brings energy and pace as a sub at 75 mins.....but he's no' the real deal.

mybestmatesa,

Wikipedia 09/07/2008 15:18:13
Rangers Football Club are an association football team based in Glasgow, Scotland, who currently play in the Scottish Premier League. They have won 51 league titles,[2] a world record, and have won more major trophies than any football club in the world.[3]

I used to enjoy coming on here and reading the wordplay (and occasionally contribute), but Oh! how the close season is affecting some people.
Instead of animated prose about:
penalties given or not;
we'd rather get bate than play defensive;
the world's against us; OR
we're better than you cos I support *******;
etc;
We now have people writing jokes that were mostly sh**e the first time I heard them ( I like the ace of spades one though). I can't wait for the footbal to start so we can start mistreating Dundee Utd again (the same way Scotland used to mistreat Wales in the World Cup) and everyone can start arguing about the things that matter, eg:
Our pies are better than yours;
Barcelona like us better than you

See you all in August
