COLIN Montgomerie apologised last night to a Sky Sports sound man, following an on-course spat at the European Open last week when he spoke in a condescending manner to the TV employee.
The Scot's expression of regret came after Ewen Murray, the golf TV commentator who now coaches Darren Clarke, described Montgomerie's exchange with the technician on the 13th hole during the second round at the London Club last week as "the most embarrassing few minutes I have witnessed on a golf course".

Murray recalled: "Ross, our sound technician, was doing his job 40 yards away from Colin's third shot, i.e pointing the sound recorder in Monty's direction, so you can hear the sound of the ball being struck through your TV sets.

"Monty backed off and said to Ross: 'Do you have a problem here?' The reply came: 'No problem at all'. What followed was the most sickening minute I have experienced on a golf course. The Scot replied: 'You're here because of me, OK, remember that'.

"If I had said that and my late professional golfer father was listening, it would have been at least a month before I could sit comfortably without any pain.

"His behaviour was beyond an apology. He let the game down badly. He let the Tour down, as well as his friends, family, admirers, supporters, sponsors, and fellow pros."

On hearing of the comments, Montgomerie said last night: "You know what I'm like. I do things in the heat of the moment that I later regret. I was clearly out of line on this occasion. I have spoken to Mark Roe, who also works with Sky, and whom I know well and asked him to get the man's address so that I can follow up this apology with another one."

Having written a column on skysports.com earlier this week on Monty's outburst in Kent, Murray revisited the topic in an open letter in which he invited the golfer to make amends.

The TV commentator said Monty's behaviour on the course was "akin to an angry incredible hulk". Last month Murray wrote: "If Colin had an on-course temperament to match his off-course demeanour, he would have won six majors by now."

Embarrasment.
That just about covers it.
"Beyond an apology". Well said!
I suspect that there are plenty of fellow professionals on the tour who harbour thoughts, best kept close to themselves, about this "Embarrasment". (I can only presume that Padraig Harrington is unaware of all this)
Well done Ewen Murray for voicing what I suspect many within the game are afraid to say for fear of rocking the boat!
Embarrasing to golf as a sport, and undoing a lot of good work in the promotion of the sport among people who may be thinking of taking it up.
A stinking attitude, when the first rule in golf is etiquette.
This embarrasment to the game, to the authorities which govern it, to the fans, to keen amateurs and lovers of the sport, to fathers keen to have their children take up this "Lifestyle choice", to the people who work covering the sport, is sickening to listen to in his interview from Loch Lomond, in light of, not only this, but countless other examples of shocking and "embarrasing" behaviour from someone who quite clearly considers himself a leading light in the game.
Apologies don't cover it!
Not anymore they don't!
How can the authorities see this "embarrasment" as an option when considering representation of the sport?
They would be doing the game a dis-service and need to take stock of this fact, with immediate effect, before any further damage is done.
What ever happened to expressions like "bringing the game into disrepute"?
And all that before considering the arrogance, the darn right rudeness born out of such narcissistic ego mania.
This "Embarrasment" needs to be addressed.
Are the authorities to scared to deal with this petulant spoilt child-monster?
This self promoting "Embarrasment" sounds really sickening when heard talking of representing Europe, let alone captaining a side.
I presume that the reason that I hear of no one else mentioning "Captain" and "Colin Montgomery" in the same sentence is because of the word "Embarrasment"?

Q:Which football team does Monty support?Answers on the back of a 100 euro note to Swordsman Towers,Dublin

I feel sorry for this sad man who obviously has mental health issues. First time I came across him I was playing in the 1987 Scottish Amateur (which he won by the way!) and when he waltzed on to the practice ground at the start of the week he directed that everyone else should leave to give him space to hit! Everyone knows you have to have a certain amount of ego and self belief to be successful but Monty is way beyond this. He would appear to be the most arrogant, spoiled, rude, infantile, egotistical, gifted ball striker and sad plonker in the world. I'm sorry Monty, I have tried over the years to give you the benefit of the doubt but this latest tantrum is beyond the pale. Away and boil yer heid you sad, deluded man and think about those majors you could have won if you had behaved like a grown up.

ewen murray is in love with himself and likes to sound important--many people in all walks of life says the wrong things when the pressure is on and monty is no different apart from the fact he is man enough to apologise

#6 - the answer is "Leeds Utd", so please keep your OF nonsense away from non-OF threads

#11 - true up to a point, except that Monty was "man enough" to apologise 5 days after the incident, and only when the press showed him Murray's article on SkySports website.

This has to be taken in the context than the failed golfer from Juniper Green (Murray) is in fact also there because Monty is there. Maybe he should consider that before he continues his vendetta against Monty.

The man is a clown. Hope he never gets his major. A shame he comes from Scotland. He is the type of person tarnishes Scotland's image throughout the world and has people like me trying to explain him away. Americans detest him the most after witnessing his behavior over there often. If he won a major there he would be booed off the course.
See a doc and get the anger management pills Colin ya fat git

Monty is. and always has been. a complete to**er, let down by his behavior on the green, I just hope Murray does not follow in his footsteps and instead accepts he is in a privileged position where he has had the opportunity and breaks to make a lucrative career in sport where so many others have not. Monty should have been a role model, just like Murray, sadly he has never been. If he had not been Scottish, he would have been vilified by the press up here, yes he is the Scottish Faldo but we can't admit it!

Murray proves the idea that journalists will do anything and say anything to get publiicity. He demands an apology and when he gets it demands a better apology and when he gets it he guess what writes another story saying yeah well Monty should apologise better.

Would the reading public miss Murray if he was retired from golf writing - I don't think so.

A tip for the sound journnalist do not move your 'mike' at all once a player addresses the ball not an inch even and then the player won't get annoyed with you.

#21 And no surprise at the attitude displayed because of his alleigances. At least you have been big enough to admit it.
I agree with #22 but would also say that Monty has a real problem in terms of being able to keep the focus on his game whilst at the same time being able to count to ten....I suspect this inability to "keep the heed" that manifests itself with his bad behaviour, is the very chink in his armour that has resulted in his failures to win a major.

#23. "Murray proves the idea that journalists will do anything and say anything to get publiicity".
A bit rich considering "Mr. Embarrasment" himself, who is the only golfer in the world in his mind, and courts free self publicity at every available opportunity.
There are other people playing the game today, but all we hear about is this clots most recent outburst.
Would the reading public miss Montgomery (and all his tantrums) if he was retired from golf? - I don't think so.

It hurts me to say it but there are two Scotsmen I just can't warm to or support - Monty and Murray. Two arrogant, rude, self absorbed, spoiled, mummy boy brats. Barely a masculine cell between them.
