HEARTS are no longer shackled by the fear factor when they face the Old Firm and will seize the opportunity in the SPL's match of the day against Celtic at Tynecastle to relish the cut and thrust of such a critical encounter, according to their captain, Robbie Neilson.
Having joined the youth team in Gorgie as a teenager in 1996, Neilson has spent plenty of seasons at Tynecastle playing second fiddle to Rangers and Celtic. "I don't think there's the same fear now when you go to Parkhead and Ibrox," reflected the defender.

"I've been there a few times and got turned over in the past. Now you can be more confident of picking up points. And when they come to Tynecastle, we know we can win there. You look forward to taking part in a big game and there's no fear."

It goes without saying Hearts have plenty of respect for the league leaders, who won 2-0 at Tynecastle in November. The longer the season has lasted, however, the more formidable Hearts have become.

In the opinion of the long-serving right-back, much of the credit for the team's progress is down to the influence of manager Csaba Laszlo.

"He's got an enthusiasm about him – he's entertaining and enlightening as well," said the captain.

"He has definitely got the respect of the dressing room. He keeps everyone on their toes and they all listen to what he has to say. He has some good points and has united us all. He has got us driving forward together.

"He was an unknown quantity when he came here last summer, but sometimes you need a change at a club. He has changed a lot at the academy in the way things are run and everything is moving in a different direction with the training programme. It's working, because we're sitting in third place.

"Judge it on results, and from that point of view he has been successful. I wouldn't say it was more professional, it's just being done in a different way, more of a continental (influence]. A lot of his previous work was in Germany and you can see that coming through. The sessions we do are in the continental way, I think."

While Celtic will be motivated by the incentive of winning the title over the closing weeks of the campaign, Hearts are similarly galvanised by the challenge of finishing third.

"I don't know how the manager feels – he always talks about the top six – but for me third place is the minimum we should be looking for," said Neilson. "At the start of the season you have the hope of challenging for the title, then, if you lose out on that, you look for second and then, third.

"We're seven points clear in third with seven games left, which means we're in a great position. If we don't hold on to that place, then that would be a failure. That's how I feel."

Neilson believes if Hearts return to Europe next season it will be helpful for the players to have home games staged in the buoyant atmosphere of Tynecastle rather than the soulless surroundings of Murrayfield. He reckons qualifying for the Europa League would also help to lure more quality players to the Edinburgh club.

"This summer will be very important for Hearts and if we can invest in a few players then we'll have a great chance of challenging," he said. "If we can stabilise and get European football, then that has a big appeal for getting boys into the club. If you can say: 'Come to us and play in the Europa League', it will be more appealing."

After producing one of their most fluent performances of the season in defeating Kilmarnock last weekend, Hearts will need to call on all of their new found resolve to trouble Gordon Strachan's league leaders.

Laszlo took the opportunity in person to assess Celtic at Parkhead when they defeated Falkirk 4-0 on Wednesday evening. He takes the view that you can never have too much information and knowledge is power. "What we do here doesn't happen by accident," he said. "It's very important to be informed."

And Neilson was upbeat about his team's chances against Celtic. He added: "Celtic had a difficult game on Wednesday night against Falkirk – they were under pressure but still got the result. I'm sure they'll be looking to come to Tynecastle to win. But we're looking to get the three points ourselves and are confident. All the games are important from now."

Pundit, first to comment as usual I see! I agree somewhat with your comment although I do think there has been a definite drop in the standards at the OF. I am no longer worried when facing them and the last 3 results Hearts have had against them are two away draws and a home win against Rangers. The biggest problem non OF teams seem to have is sustaining form all season with Hearts and Dundee United being best examples. Good results v OF then losing to so called lesser teams. However, can see a win tomorrow which will no doubt please you!!

Pundit, that may be right but bottom line is that a poor Celtic team have won 3 in a row and the team that Burley put together would, I think, be in with a chance of the title. Laszlo is creating a good atmosphere at Hearts and we are only a striker and a Berra replacement away from challenging I reckon. Just got to hold onto the likes of Driver and next season could be good!!!

Pundit, perhaps you are right about Celtic having the better squad but we had better manager. Celtic fans must be delighted that WGS has managed to win anything as don't rate him much. Laszlo is doing a great job and can see a three way battle next season unless Hearts squad is dismantled over summer or one of OF spends big. Would be good for Scottish football fir more competition.

Robbie STFU lets do our talking on the park and if we do manage to get a better type of player in next term you will be looking for a job somewhere else mate.
So Robbie no passing across your own box setting up chance for them like you did last time.
We can get a result tomorrow but lets keep our feet on the ground and dont give the unwashed any press cuttings to pin up on the notice board. When will players learn to keep there mouths shut until they have earned the right to gab to the papers.Csabas the man win lose or draw.Give us a good ref and we cant ask for more.
JT for life.

Sounds like you ate writing off the Gers for the next few years! Not surprised though, they always say never go back and Smith should have taken heed. Having been at Dyndee in 1986 and been through the disappointment I do not talk about title challenges lightly! Optimistic maybe, but also reckon am realistic and looking forward to the challenge!

Agree if lose players then we are back to square one. But one advantage we have is that Edinburgh us a city people love to live in. Aguiar, Driver would be happy to stay and I reckon if we get Europa League they will stay. And Wallace and Elliot are Jambos through and through. Looking good if they stay and we get a decent striker. As fir the Gers, you have to get rid of idiots like Boyd, Ferguson and MacGregor, all a disruptive influence and frankly a disgrace.

#8 Bear in mind that if Hearts do lay down a serious challenge next year, which I hope they can do, then not only will we need to fend off the Ugly Sisters but we will need to fend off the west coast press.

They will do thier utmost to derail us so that the big two remain at the top of the pile. The Ugly's cannot afford financially for another team to grab one their spots as it clearly means a possible revenue loss.

Paranonia? Nope don't think so just look at the history of this and it is all there for everyone to see. Gone are the days when we can praise a challenge to them because money, and greed, has got in the way.

Look at the SPL Press Box programme this week. 40 minutes of garbage about the ongoing Ferguson and McGregor saga and then as soon as the presenter menetioned the fact that Hearts had a game against Celtic comiung up and that Shabba was possibly manager of the season it was more or less rubbished. Granted they did say that Hearts would give the Tic a hard game but overall we were just a side show.

Still one can only hope that I anm wrong and that my views are purely cynical but I would put my last cent on the fact that it will happen as soon as we challenge.

We could have won about 8-3 against Killie and maybe have scored as much as ten. The point is we still missed chances and a penalty. There are going to be fewer chances today so we can't afford to miss any. We also have to be alert from the kick off going down after a few minutes against Celtic is harder than against Killie. The first half display against Rangers has to be left at Ibrox and dumped.

Indeed we do not fear the OF any more and think I'm right in saying that Hearts have the best recent record against Celtic in the SPL. No room for complacancy though and a good start and playing full-out for the full length match are both essential.

You don't sit back against the OF and they don't like it up them. Good that Celtic are a bit below strength today.

Come on the JTs!!!!

Rangers MUST win the title this year. It is likely to be the last chance they will ever have to do so.

I believe 60 points will secure Jambos third place. For Aberdeen and Dundee United to teach that total it means 15 points from 8 matches, a tall order. Main thing is to keep winning and to win last two before the split third place would almost be assured.

#1 - Pundit, for once I was going to agree with you 100% and congratualte you on a decent post - then as I approach the end of your post you come out with "the wee teams" - tut tut tut! 'the rest' would have been fair, but 'wee teams' just shows the contempt OF fans have for the rest of the clubs playing in the SPL. I wouldnt class teams like Hearts/Aberdeen/D Utd as 'wee teams' - Hibs are the 'wee team of Edinburgh' (for banter sake with Hearts fans) but I wouldnt class them as a wee team in the same context as you put it.

To me a wee team is teams in the divisions below the SPL, and there are still some bigish clubs in the 1st division (Dundee/St Johnstone/Livingston). Yes they are not massive clubs with massive stadiums.

Show a bit of respect for crying out loud.

What one has to remember is Csaba is in his first season at Hearts not like the Celtic and Rangers managers who have had the time to work with the players. Building a team doesnt happen overnight and when Csaba took over from Frail we were at the bottom as far as playing as a team. Had Csaba been at Hearts for two or three seasons I beleave the league would have a different outcome and we would be closer if not above Rangers. At the moment we have the best Manager in the SPL:

Don't agree with Neilson - things have changed that's true, but the gap between the OF and the rest is as big as ever!

Hearts seem to be able to hold their own against Rangers and Celtic this season, but look at the league standings! Same old story - OF 12pts ahead of the rest and the league title as far out of reach as ever!

Still it's been a pretty good season for Hearts so far!

#18 2-1 HEARTS with goals from Elliot & Aguier.

...you may not be far wrong - it's 1-1 now and Aguiar has scored - just need Eliot to bang in the winner! I hope you have some money on it.

What I saw today was a couple of teams playing as well as they possibly can. 1-1 was the right result.
BUT
One of the teams is a young team with an astute manager that is only just over 8 months into his tenure. In usual circumstances I would wager that natural progression/improvement is on the cards for this team. The other side has a manager that knows this - he knows that his side is top dog right now but if a certain Vladimir Romanov keeps up his "watch and succeed" plan this will not be for long.
That is as good as both teams are - both would have beaten any other team in the SPL today with comfort.
Said it before and I'll say it again - We go after the weak Weegie team first - No Rangers Champions League money and we can overtake them next season - Celtic the next. Mind you 5hit happens so i've no doubt we will press the self destruct button long before that can happen, but surely vlad saw today that clearing out the dead wood and bringing in two maybe three bits of quality could see the stranglehold of the Weegie mafia broken.

Four other points

1. 4 union jacks and an ulster flag - bin them.
2. Why do so many celic fans want to join the IRA as they sung?
3. Balogh - For the Xth time - he is not the best keeper at Tynecastle - after the 1st minute balls up he came for two more balls and missed them both. No keeper is perfect - I just reckon that Macdonald is the safer option.
4. Wrong decision Casbah - One of very few since you have arrived - Tullburg for Bruno - Jonsson was the call as the midfield were starting to be overrun. Still - we got away with it, partially thanks to a man I have berated at times - Zaliukas - immense today.

Certain young racehorces you look at and say to yourself - this animal has improvement in it - and quite a bit........ In footballing terms I see the same with Hearts. Can we hold things together this time ?

4rsehole Strachan says we are "land of the giants with 8 players over 6 foot".
Might I say to the small man with the scary missus - Bruno,Driver,Robbie,Elliot,Stewart. They all started and are not "six foot" - Wee fading ginger must have had some fingers and toes amputated.

31 Regarding the subsitutions. That is the one thing i would change about Csaba a lot of times this season his subsitutions have been very strange
Apart from that what a job he is doing
