HAVING spent much of the season fine-tuning a system of play which gets the most out of limited resources, Csaba Laszlo, the manager of Heart of Midlothian, expects to have more testing decisions to make on personnel and tactics as the club's injury problems ease and the quest for European football intensifies.
The return to form and fitness of Mike Tullberg, Calum Elliot and Gary Glen as options up front, Andrew Driver's availability on the flanks and the emergence from suspensions of goalkeeper Janos Balogh and central defender Marius Zaliukas means Hearts are well placed to mount a credible challenge for third place in the SPL over the closing weeks of the campaign.

"Everybody is available and in two weeks I also think Laryea Kingston will be OK," Laszlo reported."I don't know if I have a stronger squad but I have more choice, yes.I think you must not change what has worked for the long term good. The most important thing is my team can play different systems so they know what they have to do and we have worked on this in training.

"We can play 4-4-2 in different ways and we can play 4-4-1-1 and we have the players for this now.The formation at the moment is one we practice and we have more possibilities to change things and the key against Rangers was that we changed the system and we had opportunities to score and could have won the game."

While relying on 4-5-1 with only Christian Nade in attack left Hearts to resemble a one-trick pony for most of the season, Elliot's positive showing as a substitute in the second-half of the 2-2 draw at Ibrox has made it possible for Laszlo to implement Plan B and switch to 4-4-2.

Elliott suffered abuse from his own supporters when his form shaded last season. This term he spent the first half of the season on loan to Livingston where he re-discovered his touch in front of goal. On returning to Tynecastle, the young forward had to show patience, standing in line even behind Adrian Mrowiec, when the cupboard appeared bare in attack. When he eventually got his chance at Ibrox, Elliot was involved in both his side's goals and might have won the game but for an excellent save from Allan McGregor.

"Elliot is a player who has spent a lot of time on loan and who has had problems with everything here," said Laszlo. "He has scored goals for Livingston and showed against Rangers he is back. I think his confidence would really get a boost if he scored two or three goals but he is definitely getting there.

"I have tried to build his confidence up but I told him he had to help me, I couldn't do it alone. So for me there were very good signals against Rangers that he is a player who is getting better step by step."

Laszlo believes the future of the club lies with its young Scottish players but is hesitant about asking too much of them here and now. Although Jamie MacDonald, who signed a new three-year contract with the club, was touted as capable of following Craig Gordon into the Scotland team, the 22-year-old goalkeeper, who has a hand injury, is likely to make way for Balogh against Kilmarnock at Tynecastle tomorrow.

"At the moment maybe Jamie doesn't have the class of Craig Gordon. But if he keeps working 100 per cent then one day he can reach the national team as well. We have the pre-contract in place with Ian Black and are trying to build a hungry young team which is not just satisfied when they look at their bank accounts, but also when they look at the league table and see they have a lot of points."

During the break for international football, Laszlo felt sympathy for one of his predecessors at Tynecastle, George Burley, when the Scotland manager faced criticism for his handling of the squad on and off the pitch. "Everybody has problems and everyone has to resolve them," he reflected. "The important thing for the national team was getting the three points. Scotland have another chance to qualify for the World Cup and that's what matters."

What a great opportunity tomorrow to play some attacking football and get some momentum for the European push.

Great to have options now. I was always a believer in the 4-4-1-1 as it played to the strengths of the squad. Now we have players back we can mix it up a bit and it would be great to see us more attacking at times but most importantly a little more adaptable.

We now have 3 cup finals coming up before the split - if we take 6 or 7 points from these three games we will be very hard to shift from 3rd place.

Clean sheet, and two or three goals for us tomorrow. Nade and Elliot to start up front, Tullberg off the bench, please. No excuse not to play 4-4-2 at home now, especially as we only require one more point to guarantee top six.

Don't want to count chickens before they are hatched (this is Hearts after all) but three points tomorrow would be really good given the other fixtures that are on. Got to at least retain that five point cushion with a couple of tricky games coming up.

Looking forward to seeing the team carry on from where they left off at Ipox, but right from the start this time please.

Who?,

Hearts now have more attacking options available but i'm not too sure that the quality is there.

- Nade is almost the french kenny miller (a non scoring striker)
- Elliot still has a long way to go before he can be considered an genuine asset, he is moving in the right direction but still has some way to go
- Tullberg has been injured so the jury is out and will require 5- 10 games on the bounce before he can be adequatly judged.
- Glen has a lot of ability and is learning all the time showing improvement and maturity, Csaba doesn't seem to fancy him which is odd considering Csaba can tell a good player from a bad one.

Changing the formation for the sake of it is a bad idea, hearts have played some eye bleed football this season but have got the results. I always believe that playing at least 2 up front at home is a requirement, if third (or better) can be achieved playing a more expansive game then excellent, however people must remember though that any defence featuring Zalukius will always loose goals stupid goals due to his lack of ability and common sence.

Close season maybe a better time to adopt a new set of tactics and formation(s).

11 Disagree
The reason we lost a goal against Hibs was because we dint play Zali he has loads of ability and is another who has improved granted his sending off against Falkirk was stupid but hopefully he has learned his lesson
We also need to start with two strikers get more than one goal in front and play on the front foot and also give the fans a big boost

#7 Agree lets go for it, Nade upfront sorry not for me slows the game down and can't score, we have to play tullberg or gary glen with elliot. 3 points would be most welcomed.

C'mon the Gorgie !!

13 Nade has had to slow the game down when playing on his own would like to see him with another up front with him i would go with Elliot but somehow cant see that happening

Nade is quick enough, and can score, if he has another striker and an attacking midfielder to stretch the defense.

We have the players now to kill games, play some decent football, and make the twenty odd quid ticket worth paying for. It's pretty rich how quite a few posters on here complain about Hibs lack of ambition.

Casbah knows.......You can read into what he says that he now has a few options - but limited ones - as per their ability.
Natural finishers are few and far between - I'm not saying start him - but Templeton seems a natural - he should get a part game jut to blood him.
Macdonald has the goalies goves and should not be made to relinquish them until loss of form/suspension or injury comes along.

Tomorrow will be very interesting for varying reasons. No idea how we will line up at all, I suspect though it wont be 4-4-2, but its good to know if things aren't going well there are proper options to go that way and more versatility to the squad than we have had at any point this year.

Eggy will laugh it off he has a very promising career ahead of him, like the majority of the Hearts Squad he is still young.Played well when came off bench and didnt let himself down.

Story regarding 4-4-2

We have played games where the tactical formation changes into different shapes, the most important part of this side are the tactics deployed to snuff out the threat of our opponents. We have Forwards who arnt match fit but give us options up front for 25 mins to give 100 per cent.It means the second half a 4-4-2 around 65 mins could be successful if introduced over the next 8 games.

Add

Scaba has very difficult desicions to make on his choice of line up,how rare has that been for 2 seasons.
The options all over the park including players in the first squad who turn out for a decent under 21s side.
This is definatley the chance to shine Competition is amoungst a squad of young Hearts players who want to be involved The Togetherness in the final games of this season.

I hear The Templeton is being spoken about,i dont care if he is lean or that Scaba goes out running at 3 am to find the laddie a lassie LOL .Scaba is clever an is uping the ante towards the last 8 games, its the perfect oppertunity to let his young guns Loose..
