Obua faces anxious wait over work permit after agreeing to join Hearts

Published Date: 21 July 2008
DAVID Obua, the Uganda internationalist, is poised to become Hearts' first signing of the summer, although the deal remains subject to the passing of a medical and the granting of a work permit.
The 24-year-old, who can play at left-back or left-midfield, has agreed in principle to move to Edinburgh and, if the deal is concluded successfully, he will become the first player recruited by Csaba Laszlo since the Hungarian's appointment as manag
er of the Tynecastle side earlier this month.

Obua, who played under Laszlo during the latter's time as manager of the African nation, trained with Hearts over the weekend, and was among a 25-man squad which flew out from Edinburgh Airport to Frankfurt last night for a ten-day training camp in the German town of Wiesbaden.

After a successful three-year spell in South Africa with Kaizer Chiefs, the Ugandan sought a move to Europe, and, following a recent trial with West Ham United which failed to result in a permanent arrangement, Obua must now wait to find out if red tape will block his move to Scotland.

He has been capped 22 times for Uganda, so should comfortably fulfil the legal requirement that players seeking a work permit must have appeared in 75 per cent of their country's competitive international 'A' team fixtures in the previous two years. However, it remains to be seen if Hearts will be able to get round the criterion that the FIFA ranking of the player's national side aggregated over two years must be at 70th or above. Uganda are currently ranked 97th in the world.

In the meantime, Obua will spend the next week and a bit in Wiesbaden further acquainting himself with what he hopes will be his new work colleagues. The 25-man party selected for the trip to Germany threw up few surprises, with Calum Elliot and Anthony Basso the most high-profile omissions aside from those on the injured list. Elliot remains in line to join Inverness on loan after becoming disillusioned with life at Tynecastle, while the latest snub will surely signal the end of the line for Basso, who has struggled to find favour in the eyes of Hearts' management.

Finnish striker Juho Makela, who has also been something of an outcast during his time in Scotland, received a boost when he was selected to make the trip. The forward arrives in south-west Germany with renewed confidence as he has just completed a successful three-month loan spell in his homeland with HJK Helsinki, scoring six goals in 11 appearances. Youngsters Jamie Mole and goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald, who both spent time on loan at Queen of the South last season, also made the cut, but injured duo Mirsad Beslija and Robbie Neilson missed out on a trip which will include triple training sessions as well as three friendly matches.

Meanwhile Laszlo's move to bring his former Uganda assistant Jackson Mayanja to Scotland appears to be at an advanced stage. "I have had several phone calls from Hearts officials but I am not allowed to comment further," said the 39-year-old Ugandan.

Fernando Screpis, whose Hearts contract was terminated last week, is currently on trial at Plymouth Argyle.

this guy sounds a good player, after all who have we got in that possition, lee wallace (LB) and ksanevichuis (LM) not quite the quality that we are looking for this provides us with strength and depth in two positions !

The Scotsman is a bit short of stories today...

If the guy is going to play football, and has a club, why does he not get a visa with nae problems?

It's not as if he is going to disappear out of public view.

Im not footballs Massiahs will stop it.

Jason Thompson got on the plane to Germany tho, a real prospect.

Good to see Rapnik, MacDonald, Makala, Thomson and Templeton going. All good young players and a chance to prove themselves to the manager.

#2 - Driver and Chesney can play LM, Wallace also needs decent competition for LB....as we dont know how good (or bad) Obua is yet how can he be slated - before he is even signed?

Promises to be a worthwhile signing. Left midfield/back who according to Wikipedia scored a hat-trick at international level - sounds good to me. Let's hope there are no work permit complications as there have been in the past - FIFA rankings are a joke as we all know.

I hear Hibs and Sellick were interested too until they realised it was spelt Obua and not O'Bua ;o)

Now 2 forwards a right back and maybe a keeper keep a seetled team and i think we should do well

I see the usual OF infestations have appeared again.

This deplorable situation is well summed-up by our old Hibee friend "Albert" on another thread...

"There is a reason that you cannot post your unadulterated snash on the stories of either your teams' threads. That reason is plain for all exept the suporters of both of Scotlands' shame teams to see.

You cannot or will not speak to each other in a reasonable and respectful way. For that alone you are most definitely not welcome on threads that bear no witness to your views."

Firstly, comment on this story.

Neer heard of this guy so I'm not about to slate his ability without seing him in action first. I would also strongly suggest Hearts fans dont think too highly of him for the same reasons. The number of times the Jambo support has shot itself in the foot in the last couple of years is roughly equal to the numbero empty seas in my end of 'that' semi...

South Africa does not have a strong league and nor does Uganda have a strong team. That said, it doesn't mean this guy is bad either...

As for my comments on the Hibs thread I am proud to see that we will always put our differences aside to join forces against the dark forces from the west.
Our rivalry is older than theirs and has a lot more to be proud of as support of your team has nothnig to do with trophies won and everything to do with holding your head high as a statement of your roots and home.

Looks like a good signing. Certainly his colleagues in the Kaiser Chiefs team against MU looked very good and could easily beat most SPL teams.

Also good to see that this was NOT a VR signing.

Soon be full houses at Tynie once again!!!

How many tickets have Hibs sold for the Barca game? The excuses will come thick and fast over another wee team fan base disaster!!!!

19

Albert Kidd's 86 allstars,

Melbourne 21/07/2008 09:10:37
NBJT, THe problem Hibs have is that the game should never have been played at Murrayfield. No-one can or will defend that stupid decision of Petries to you or anyone else.

Easter road would have a great atmosphere and would be full, we should have played there, end of.

I am not concerned which of our teams has more fans as it's just too mind numbingly parochial for someone who lives 17,000 miles away...

Gorgie's Finest,

This will hopefully be a good signing, Obua is one of Ugandas top players, while Uganda may not be the Brazils of this world as many other African nations have shown they can and do produce sme very good even world class footballers. If the reports of a lot of the Ugandans wanting to follow Csaba are true then Csaba could pick the best. At the very least this signing puts pressure on Wallace to perform more consistently and to up his game.

#18 Albert
Re the OF, spot on. The Edinburgh derby is an older tradition than the OF derby, and no matter how much rivalry there may be between the Edinburgh teams, differences will always be put aside when it comes to fighting the OF. Something they cannot seem to understand.

21

Gorgie's Finest,

21/07/2008 09:16:47
This sounds encouraging as well. Looks like Csaba is being given the free reign after all if.

"Meanwhile one player who's not travelled to Germany is Anthony Basso.

talk107 can reveal the keeper is the first player to have fallen foul of strict new discipline regulations put in place by Csaba Laszlo."
22

The test for Obua will be when he is lining up against aberdeen, inverness or motherwell from november onwards- its cold for us in the stands so just imagine how a guy from southern africa will find the playing conditions.

I doubt joberg or cape town will have prepared him for that.

Thats the problem and worry, as many other players have found it difficult to cope.

Its not just the Motherwell, Aberdeen games etc.

What about a freezing cold sub zero-temp wednesday night away to someone like Brechin in the Scottish cup. Thats the real test for these guys.

Hibs are just trying to get out of Hearts shadow. We played them last year at murrayfield so they want to look like our equals by doing the same. It was never going to have a crowd like hearts had. It was no surprise Heart turned down another shot at barca.Been there done it. Neutrals have already seen barca and its being played on a thursday night. I wouldnt be surprised if Hibs lost money on this fixture after paying Barcas fees.
26

Gorgie's Finest,

#21 As far as I know Barca chose the venue, their the home team, as was the case last year when we played them.

#27
Barca pay Hibs a fee. As i said above Barca chose the venue and fixture, all proceeds Go to UNICEF, minus any fee for Hibs (Which will be significantly less than Hearts recieved) and any overheads. We made 1 million from the game last year I believe, that was our fee.
27

Jambo-ree,

21/07/2008 09:36:29
#24/25 Actually it can get pretty cold in Jo'burg due to its altitude. Night temperatures are around freezing level at this time of year. Know its not quite the same as a perishing wind and sleet coming off the North Sea but may not be quite as big a culture shock as some might think.
28

Ronaldo Stuffed Everyone,

Good to see Csaba trying to get quality talent in.
#21 I missed the Barca game but all the other games Hearts played at Murrayfield have been completely lacking in atmosphere. Even with 30,000 the ground looks and sounds empty. If Hearts had ended up playing all their football there as envisaged by the Pieman and his various supporters Hearts would have died as a football club far quicker than through any of the hair brained schemes envisaged by the anti Vlad brigade.
Hibs are making a huge mistake playing there instead of being in front of a full house at ER.

#30 -Murryfield is a great stadium, biggest in scotland with no bad views of the game. There is a running track around one side but the distance between the spectators and the pitch is less than hampden.

I've been at all of hearts games there and the atmosphere isn't that bad considering. The problem is that for the benefit of TV hearts put all of the crowd in the top tier of two stands. Initially most hearts fans quite liked the ground, after the braga game many said it wasn't as bad as they thought it would be. The following games when results went bad it was then most started complaining about the atmosphere- funny that...

Its strange that when rugby fans visit football grounds they go along and enjoy themselves, make some noise and take something out of the experience. When football fans visit rugby grounds they mock and patronise. Its almost as if they are scared to enjoy the visit. Many seem to make up their minds before they have even got into the ground. Bit of a shame really.

Also if you remember when all seated stadia first came in it took fans a while to get the atmosphere going. Many arsenal fans said the first year at the emerates was weird as the fans were getting use to the stadium etc. Now they love it and it shows with the atmosphere generated.

#34 Couldn't disagree more. I was at all the Hearts at Murrayfield games apart from Barca and the ground was near silent with huge empty spaces all over it.
I have watched Herats since 1958 and the reality is Hearts have a support of about 13000-17000, which is slightly bigger than Hibs but only by about 1-2000 (depending on how well each team is doing). Hearts used to have an average support in the 20,000-30,000 range but thas was in the 60's early 70's. Thats long gone and to play in front of even 17,000 at Murrayfield is depressing and lacking in atmosphere. Contrast that with 15000 at ER or Tynecastle. The players get a buzz from the close proximity of the crowd and the noise.

#44 - did you read my post?

I never said that sticking 18,000 people into a 67800 stadium was a good idea. Neither did i say that an 18,000 stadium packed would be a worse atmosphere than a 67800 stadium with the same number of people. Full stadia no matter the size tend to have a high noise volume.

All i was saying is that when hearts played at murryfield the club stuck the fans into two stands. The fans never made any noise, you can't blame the stadium for that! Every team who plays in a new stadium whether due to a move or reconstruction does suffer at first atmosphere wise.

Whether you like it or not football fans do have a chip on their shoulders about rugby, rugby grounds and rugby fans. Those who follow rugby don't have the same chip on their shoulders. Maybe if you dropped the chip, relaxed and didn't go along with an anti- rugby vendetta you would have maybe made some noise?

Maybe a Scottish journalist might want to investigate who is on the panel when rubbish players get permits to play for the OF???

#67 the Jason Scotland thing was blown out of proportion by the united fans. He was a guy who couldn't buy a starting place in the team, yet they were claiming he was invaluable. It just doesn't work like that and it was no surprise to me that they were turned down.

But for every Jason Scotland there's a Russel Latapy- someone who doesn't meet the criteria but who clearly is of great benefit to the club involved.

This one's going to come down to opinions and as Obua's played in the MLS and SA's biggest team, I expect him to be granted a work permit.

Guys, believe me Obua has been a very fantastic signing for Hearts. I have watched all the International games Uganda has played since 2005 and this guy is simply great. He has a deft left foot and will find his way through any defence. He has torn apart African Power houses like Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Angola and scored a hat trick in a 3-1 win over Niger in 2008 Nations cup qualifiers (in which Uganda failed to qualify by just a one-goal difference) and finished with 5 goals along the way in six games. He is also has a big game temperament and has been one of the most consistent players on the continent. Lazlo knows him well and I believe he will be a success with Hearts. He spent a few years with Kaizer Chiefs and was named the 2005/06 ABSA Cup winners’ Player of the Season.
