DAN Parks will retain the challenge of spearheading a new-look Scottish attack in the first Test match in Argentina this weekend with the firm belief of coach Frank Hadden that he has turned a corner since the RBS Six Nations Championship.
The 30-year-old stand-off endured a miserable finish to the campaign with personal errors being magnified by the fact they led to tries that ultimately killed off Scotland's bid to end a struggle of a championship with victory in Italy. There were suggestions that Parks had played his last match for Scotland, but he responded with fine displays for Glasgow at the tail-end of the season and proved to Hadden, and Sean Lineen, his club coach and assistant on this tour, that he could still be the pivot as they seek a more threatening approach.

For Scotland's first Test in Argentina in nearly 15 years, Hadden yesterday named a side with three new caps in Ben Cairns at outside centre, Thom Evans on the wing and Matt Mustchin, Edinburgh's New Zealand-born lock who qualified for Scotland on residency grounds only last week. But, directing the attack will be Parks and Hadden is confident he will do it well.

He said: "His ability to rise to challenges is extraordinary. I've always had a lot of confidence in him. During the Six Nations I was concerned about him being off the boil because of the long season he'd had.

"He'd not had the break he had the previous year and I felt we didn't see the best of him, but after the post-Six Nations appraisal with myself and Sean (Lineen] he has taken it all on board, as he always does, and risen to the challenge.

"Dan always knew he had to take the game to the opposition a bit more. What he was doing latterly, with Glasgow during the season and in the Six Nations, was taking it to the gain-line and then passing it. He wasn't offering himself as a threat and that was the thing I said to him, and Sean said to him, straight after the Six Nations, that he personally had to become more of a threat.

"In the very first game after the Six Nations he had a go right from the start and he's continued to do that. We knew that until the opposition started to see him as a threat then his passing and kicking game would be less effective, but he's finished the season as Glasgow's second top try-scorer.

"He has also turned himself from a 75 percent (successful] defender into a 90 percent-plus – Alan Tait has rarely seen that level of individual progress. As I said, he constantly rises to the challenge and is an absolute pleasure to work with."

His return as the leading stand-off is a terrific testament to Parks' inner strength because his mistakes almost acted like a personal magnet for the barrage of criticism that followed a championship in which Scotland lost four out of five games. It means even more for Scotland, in the sense that if he gets good ball and can attack the gain-line with a more genuine threat, and so tie in defenders, the back line of Graeme Morrison, Cairns, Evans, Simon Danielli and Chris Paterson, restored to full-back, has the ability to seriously worry Argentina.

As well as equalling Scott Murray's record of 87 caps, Paterson will tomorrow make his 28th outing in the No15 jersey, equalling his left wing appearances. Hadden clearly seems happier with Paterson at full-back. "It's fantastic that Chris has managed to get (to 87 caps] and it's testament to his hard work. People say it's about ability, but I think it's more to do with attitude than ability.

"There's no doubt that the work he has put in is paying dividends for him.

"His strength as an attacking player is his broken-field running. If you were to pick one thing that was really top-drawer it's that. Games today don't tend to be won now as sides go through their phases and sequences; it comes from that half-chance, the quick turnover, the counter-attack from the bad kick or a kick that's not chased well enough.

"Taking advantage of those situations is one of Chris' strengths – we have an exciting back three that is good at that."

"During the Six Nations I was concerned about him being off the boil because of the long season he'd had."
Yet even with his concerns, he played Parks anyway and we all know how that ended.
"People say it's about ability, but I think it's more to do with attitude than ability"
This speaks volumes; essentially Hadden believes that if you have the right attitude, then he will play you regardless of ability...hence the whole Parks fiasco.
I imagine the only reason Cairns is playing is because Robinson has forced the decision, and the only reason Evans is playing is because Lineen recognises the talent. If Hadden had his way, Jason White would play instead of Strokosch, and Di Rollo would still be bumbling around in the number 13...Hadden's good decisions only arise when injuries, other coaches or French clubs intervene!
When I remember Tait playing at 13 and then compare that to DiRollo who played the position 7 years later, it shocks me how much we have regressed. The fact that Parks is STILL playing for Scotland is testament not to his "excellent attitude" but more to Hadden's belief that, even if you play 3 or 4 disastrous games for Scotland, if I like you I will play you regardless.
I really hope the new caps (who all deserve their place in the team) perform well and help us to an historic win in Argentina...but I also hope that a win would be more down to Lineen and Robinson's input along with natural talent in the squad, and less down to Hadden or Park's "excellent attitude"
Interested in all your thoughts guys...we are all crossing our fingers and hoping the boys do well, but what are your thought on Hadden, Parks and the selections this year?

This is great news and good for the boy Parks. My own personal rugby career was always hindered by an unfortunate succession of coaches with a narrow minded insistance in both fitness and ability. Glad to see in these more modern times that such afflictions do not blight other generations.

Every time Hadden picks Parks I have this feeling that perhaps he knows something that the rest of us do not know.

Every time I hope that this will come to the fore at international level. Every time it does not. How many bad games can a guy have in a key, in the key position before the 'coach' realises that he is not up to the job.

Parks is another case of giving away cheap caps to average foreigners when young scottish guys are working hard day in day out to try and force themselves into the national and pro rugby set up.

When are we going to realise that playing an average player is not going to make an average team any better. Give the Scottish guys a chance and be done with it.

The whole Parks episode is really sickening, the bald facts are he is a Hadden favourite.

Parks's displays in the last 6 Nations were an embarrassment & unfortunately Hadden's insistence in selecting him will very shortly have a very detrimental on the size of the crowds attending Scotland games. Anyone who seen his pitiful display in Rome doesn't need me to tell them that.

Parks is not a stand off who lies flat & commits the opposing team, he is not a guy who can make half breaks.

We can win on Saturday but we could very well be starting the 2009 6 Nations with 4/5 defeats behind us.

It's not that Hadden knows something the rest of don't, it's that Parks knows where the sheep photos are kept.

So, Mr Hadden has decided to do his hilarious(to the rest of the world) ostritch impersonation. What is it in the man Parks that he sees that so many other of us just don't? At least we've saved a place on the bench by playing Mossy out of position but on the, irony here, park!
Good luck Scotland I've a feeling you will need it.

At least this should FINALLY end Haddens time in charge. Can only be what is left of his slim credibility that suffers if it all goes wrong, yet again.

Parks will be 32 at next world cup, more injury prone, more likely to be tired after another 'long season'.

At least Andy Robinson will see his future squad perform.

Good pack, good backline – wrong 10

After the depression of the 6 Nations, my spirits were lifted by a strong finish to the ML, however it’s back to the gloom of Haddens Scotland.

It is shocking that Parks after his terrible performance versus Italy is given first choice again for the next match. Its only 4 months since the debacle in Italy. The memories are still clear of the interceptions, missed kicked and abysmal attacking platform that Dan Parks delivered in that match and all his others in the 6 Nations. What message does that send out – okay boys you can play cr*p because it doesn’t matter cause Ill play you again anyway.

Fingers crossed we can get a result despite the selection howler.

He is now THIRTY,therefore another couple of years and he will be coming to the end of his career and be quickly forgotten - hopefully.
Then again it is Hadden we have in charge therefore we are liable to see this guy around for another few years !

I'm no fan of Parks, and whilst I too remember his awful performance against Italy, we should also remember that his team-mates voted him their player of the world cup. He also finished the season strongly. So I guess there is an argument that he deserves yet another one more chance.

With the backs outside him, he has little excuse to kick the ball away as often as he did in the 6N.

I do feel a bit for Godman. He seems to have been an early prototype for De Luca in getting a limited chance and then being dumped.

You can't help but think that the key battles will be up front, though.

16

Venachar,

06/06/2008 08:49:23
I do not wish to appear negative but Dan will play exactly the way the coach tells him.
Last year it was lie off and kick for position. Latter half of the season it was play flat and run (not very speedily)then offload.
Well my bet he will continue to try the running game. Only thing is I reckon that the Argentinian back row and midfield will get to him first.
However because the coach has told him to play this way nothing will change and he will be caught throughout the game with no change in style evident.
Then in the 70th minute Phil Godman will come on and after the match be criticised for lack of penetration into the Argentinians half.

Prove me wrong guys.
17

JonnyS,

Edinburgh 06/06/2008 08:53:25
For those of you who think Haden does not drop people who play badly look at Nick De Luca - in the Magners team of the year yet not starting for Scotland after a bad debut - nothing to do with the ball he was receiving.. who from? Oh aye and Godman who was made scapegoat for the debacle against Italy last year (although was it not Cusiter who threw 2 interception passes?)
18

Jockbok,

06/06/2008 09:11:07
Unbelievable, Mr Hadden. Have we come to the point that while we would like Scotland to win, a heavy defeat would bring the greater pleasure in seeing the coach sacked/contract not renewed?

Good luck to all the players.
19

Who?,

06/06/2008 09:15:57
Hadden should have been sacked after the world cup for his woeful team selections and tactics. He was out of his depth and certainly not up to the job. The pool win against italy was due to patterson's accuracy and the italian missing sitters. Against Argentina in the QF Parks lost the game for scotland, hadden sat on the sidlines looking scared of making a any sort of decision that would change the game.

Both Hadden and Parks were exposed even worse during the six nations. How either is in Argentina now is an insult to rugby fans (of any country). If the SRU hold the fans, sponsors and other key stakeholders is such flagrent disregard then action should be taken.
20

Robin Purdie,

Right, that's it, I've had enough.

I hope that Scotland get PUMPED in every game from now until Parks gets dropped and Hadden gets his jotters. You can keep your "whatever happens we need to get behind the boys" chat as well. I never thought I'd ever have this attitude about the national team, and it pains me.

"His ability to rise to challenges is extraordinary. I've always had a lot of confidence in him" - This is the most ridiculous quote I have ever heard from anyone in top level sport, let alone rugby.

Fair play for bringing in Cairns, Mustchin & Evans but I'm 100% positive that this is down to pressure from Robinson. Guess which 3 players will be first to be dropped when Scotland get dicked on Saturday?

farcical, utterly farcical.

Everyone is agreed that Parks is not the type of 10 that we all want to see in a Scotland jersey. But you have to admit that everyone else who has had a go has been even worse than he is. Unfortunately until we un-earth a nugget from the club scene, we are stuck with him. Dont forget he is also first pick for Sean Lineens Glasgow team.

None of the above players have been offered the prolonged opportunity that DP has been given to settle at international level; instead they have had their confidence shattered by poor/school boy management.

Parks aside, the selection looks good.

What is also good is that Parks is now 30 - which means that the biological time clock is starting to count down Hadden-Parks' relationship and their stranglehold over the team.
26

Gordon Brittas,

Parks for President/Lions? presumably if he had that role Keyser then it would keep him off the park which would be ideal! He's a clown, the forwards are very light for a tour of Argentina and Evans is fast at running but shocking at rugby. FACT.
The only light that gives me any hope for this is the fact that Argentina have no players available and are using pretty much an A team. Based on that we should have a chance. With Parks playing tho, we may have none.....

The Doc5,

Parks' great advantage is the confidence that comes from the knowledge that no matter how badly he plays his coaches will back him and talk him up. Compare this with the attitude publicly displayed by Hadden, whose outstanding ability seems to be to take every opportunity to undermine the confidence of those who are not his pets by diminishing and denigrating their achievements.

As for this much-vaunted Players' Player of the World Cup Award, I'd love to have seen the shortlist that players could choose from!

Wooly lad, have seen him perform enough to make a decision that he is nowhere near the level required for a test winger at the moment. He is very lucky to be getting capped. He may be fast at running but his all round skill set isn't up to a test in Argentina - he should be on the A tour and can count himself pretty lucky to be involved tomorrow. Having said that hopefully I am proved wrong, however this seldom happens.

So predictable - let's all bash Parks and blame him for everything that is wrong with Scottish Rugby.

Who ever said it is absolutely spot on - Parks plays to the tactics and game plan he's told to - it's no coincidence that when coached by Hadden he's static but after the 6N when told to open the game up by Lineen, Glasgow started putting in some marvelous attacking peformances all orchestrated by Parks (who incidentally ran Godman off the pitch in the Gla v Edin game scoring two tries in the process)
And for those who like to throw in the foreigner card - care to say anything about Matt Mustchin? Or does your hypocrisy only allow you to use that one on Parks?

Re foreigner tag - i totally disagree with anyone getting caps for a country through residency. Whether that's Mustchin, or that big English winger who's name i can't spell, i think it's wrong. Where's the passion going to come from when you do that?!

WHAT THE.....if he was a 75%'er why on earth was he playing International Rugby? An utter disgrace.

I really do like our backline but am scared sh*tless that they are going to be ruined by our horrific nos 10. The same one that single handedly destroyed a very promising player in the form of De Luca. If he does the same to Cairns I will cry.

How much more damage can this player do to Scottish Rugby? And, WHY does he never get injured? Probably something to do with 75% success rate.

Hadden's personality (after one of our regular defeats)is an embarrassment.

Hadden shows his true colours again - what an embarrassment to the game and to the jersey.

FACT: Parks is simply not good enough, he needs to be able to replicate his Glasgow form game in, game out for Scotland, it is proven that this is beyond him, therefore he should be discarded, at 30 he has little or nothing to offer the team.

FACT: Lineen and Robinson are the dream ticket, they seem to have a clue between (unlike the present incumbent) and I can only think they will benefit the squad.

FACT: Hadden has had his chance to prove his abilities as an international level coach, he has failed to do so, he must be replaced.

FACT: the SRU are a shower of effing eedjits, get out unless you have the balls to replace Hadden.

FACT: We will lose both tests and with it automatic qualification for the world cup, that will be a new low.

It disturbs me to write this but unless the SRU have the foresight to remove Hadden now then i fear this will all happen and for the first time in my 33 years of existence i'll end up having to support my team at a world cup qualifier.
