Strachan replaced Hinkel with Mark Wilson at the interval but when play restarted, the home side passed up on a great chance with barely 90 seconds gone.

Ibrox skipper Barry Ferguson robbed Georgios Samaras in the centre circle and strode forward before releasing Boyd.

The former Kilmarnock striker, with 18 goals so far this season, did not look convincing as he bore down on Boruc and blasted his shot against the Celtic keeper from 14 yards before the ball rebounded off him for a goal kick.

In the 55th minute, after Caldwell had fouled Miller to stop the ex-Celt taking advantage of a threaded Ferguson pass at the edge of the box, the Celtic defensive wall stood firm against Boyd's blasted free-kick.

Two minutes later, with their first real effort on goal, Celtic took the lead through Scott McDonald.

Samaras beat David Weir in the air, knocking the ball on to McDonald who turned Broadfoot with ease before rifling in a volley from 16 yards past Allan McGregor.

In the 62nd minute, with the game firmly in the visitors' favour, O'Dea came on for Mizuno while Lafferty replaced Adam.

The champions were offering little threat as the home fans taunted their Celtic counterparts about the absence of Aiden McGeady, the Hoops midfielder who was missing due to a club ban following a dressing room bust-up with boss Strachan.

A pulsating and frenetic game continued apace and in the 27th minute, Adam was shown the first yellow of the day for a late tackle on Robson.
Moments later Miller again fired wide from the edge of the box after Boyd played him in with Mendes, twice, also missing the target from long range.

As the players continued to fly into tackles, Celtic left-back Lee Naylor was cautioned for a foul on Davis.

Celtic's last victory in a festive fixture at Ibrox had been in 1985 while the Hoops had lost on their last three visits to Govan without scoring.

However, a four-point lead over Rangers at the top of the SPL ensured there was less pressure than usual in this game although passions were still high before the lunchtime kick-off at a frozen Ibrox.

The home side had the first effort on four minutes, midfielder Steven Davis bursting in to the Celtic box from the right, having his first shot blocked by Parkhead keeper Artur Boruc before blasting the rebound high and wide.

Then Ibrox striker Kenny Miller sped away from Hoops' right-back Andreas Hinkel down the left but when his pass arrived at the feet of Kris Boyd, his shot was blocked by McManus.

The first real controversial moment came in the 11th minute when Rangers had a goal chalked off.

Boruc failed to clear his lines from a Davis corner and when the ball spun in to the air then dropped on to the line, Ibrox defender Kirk Broadfoot challenged the Poland keeper and the ball landed in the net, to be quickly ruled out by referee Craig Thomson.

As Rangers dominated, Miller took a clever Pedro Mendes pass inside the Celtic box but hesitated before driving wide.

Charlie Adam replaced Kyle Lafferty on the left-hand side of the Rangers midfield for today's Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash with Celtic at Ibrox, the only change in manager Walter Smith's line-up from the home win over Hibernian last week.

Skipper Stephen McManus returned to the heart of the Celtic defence at the expense of Darren O'Dea after missing last week's win at Falkirk with a knee injury.

Glenn Loovens was also dropped to the bench, with Gary Caldwell returning to his regular place in defence as manager Gordon Strachan reshuffled his midfield. Koki Mizuno, who scored in his first start for the champions at Falkirk, surprisingly kept his place ahead of fellow Japanese midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura who was out altogether.

Barry Robson returned from a thigh injury and Paul Hartley came back after recovering from a virus.
