Published Date: 08 May 2008
TICKETLESS Rangers fans will be able to watch the Uefa Cup final when they descend on Manchester, it was announced today.
Council chiefs will be showing the match at fan zones at key places in the city centre.

The game against Zenit St Petersburg takes place on May 14, and more than 100,000 Rangers fans are expected to flood the city.

Police and the city council
previously advised fans not to travel without a ticket.

But today it was confirmed that big outdoor screens would be installed in response to demand from fans.

Manchester City Council's spokesman on the city centre, Councillor Pat Karney, said: "In the light of Rangers qualifying for the final and the massive reported demand from fans for bigger and better provision, we've arranged for big outdoor screens for fans to watch the match.

"Manchester is looking forward to welcoming fans from Rangers FC and from FC Zenit St Petersburg for a day to remember on 14 May.

"Our city is well used to friendly invasions of many thousands of visitors for major events like the UEFA Cup final.

"I'm confident that Manchester will give a very warm welcome to fans from Rangers and from Zenit and that all fans will have a fabulous day."

Up to 100,000 supporters are expected to make the journey south for the game from Scotland.

But the ground holds just 44,000 and Rangers fans are only getting an allocation of 13,000 tickets.

The outdoor screens will be placed in Albert Square and Piccadilly Gardens, while pubs and clubs will also show the match.

The council said that fan zones with entertainment and access to food and drink throughout the day have always been part of plans for the event at the City of Manchester Stadium.

Vicky Rosin, Assistant Chief Executive of Manchester City Council told BBC Radio Scotland: "We are looking forward to it. Somebody has described it as a friendly invasion and that's what we are expecting and what we are getting ready for.

"Our two cities are very similar in many ways. We are passionate about our football, we are passionate about sport generally and we are also known for making visitors very very welcome just as we did with the Commonwealth Games and as we know Glasgow will in 2014.

"It's all about good partnerships and a good welcome for everybody."

Common sense prevails in the end.

There would have been nothing they could do about the Rangers fans travelling so this makes sense.

Agreed mate. Really they were always going to set up fan zones. Most fans would have travelled anyway and no facilities could have been a disaster. Unfortunately cant make it down due to work commitments, still canny wait though.

Cheers mate. Il just have to make do with watchin it in Glasgow somewhere, the atmosphere will be superb all over Scotland (maybe not in the east end though);)

Yip, no fresh injuries and good to see Adam coming back. I am sometimes a big critic of his due to his fitness and pace but he can have great quality on the ball. One of the few who can change a game in an instant with a pass or shot. McCulloch re-entering the fray will also be a timely boost.

Agree with earlier posts that this makes complete sense and to not have done it may caused serious problems on the night.

I would like to say to genuine footie fans such as JJ who are a credit to the club they support, that i hope you enjoy the next week or so as it is some buzz the feeling leading up to a European final.

Hope no idiotic fans, as has hapenned with my club this season, spoils the night with anything that would detract from the occassion. álbeit i do hope you lose but that is normal football banter/rivalry.

Anyway good luck on the night.

Well my chance to go to Manchester went down the pan last night when I lost out on the third, and final ticket for the finals that was raffled by the Baku Bears Supporters Club.
Still, avoided the hassle of trying to re-book my flights I suppose, LOADS of cash was raised for charity, I can still watch it live on TV over here at quarter to midnight and HOPEFULLY won't have too much of a hangover on the flight home the next day !!

To all those that manage to make it, have a ball.

For those that don't.... I know EXACTLY how you feel !

This reminds me so much of Seville, obviously a bit further away, I had to get there and did, never got a ticket but watched on the big screens they had set up, despite the loss we did ourselves proud and best of luck to the Gers to do the same; a great achievement.

You fully deserved your win against the Well who were very disappointing going forward but I am sick and tired of the moaning over your game schedule. Rangers have manipulated a difficult situation to their benefit because their is obviously now a siege mentality which may still win you the league, nevertheless other teams have had to get through a sequence of games like this in the past, including Middlesborough last season.

Anyway hope the bears have a great party in Manchester and there is no trouble because that would not do any of us any good.

I'm sure we will still have a party over here and I might even stay awake all night to avoid missing my lift to the airport at 9.15 the following morning !

Cheers for the Good Luck message from all the real football supporters out there.

The spokesman for Manchester City Council is clearly insane. Welcoming in 'thousands' of 'friendly visitors' is akin to opening the gates to Attila's Mongol hordes and hoping that they will behave themselves.

Only the sleep-inducing tedium of a typical Rangers' performance lies between his city and a night of drunken pillage.

If, as you say, that the rickets-ridden masses from the west of Scotland are to be treated to some decent fare by their English hosts, then I stand corrected and hope they manage to snatch a few hours innocent enjoyment away from their daily drudgery. Magnet you are so parochial, don't you know that to us,up here in the north and north-east, all weegies are indistinguishable from each other - glottal-stopping primitives with no teeth, and a tendency to vomit and urinate in public.

I suppose the only encouraging thing from a Mancunian point of view is that though they are likely to be punched and kicked by Rangers' fans, at least they will not be bitten.

A rather bitter post. RFC supporters do fly the Union Jack, and the last time I looked Scotland were part of the UK. If you feel RFC supporters are confused, how do you explain Scotsman supporting Celtic yet flying the ROI's flag and a lot wanting to be classed as Irish, yet are born in Scotland.

I know it is a bitter pill for you to swallow with the Gers reaching the UEFA final playing a brand of defensive football, but it has gotten Scotland a representative in a European final for the 2nd time in 5 years, for that alone they should be congratulated.

I suppose I could list affiliations that the tic may have had with unsavoury groups but what is the point, is it not time for people to move forward and leave the indiscretions of both clubs in the past behind.

Looking forward to this weekends matches they both could go a long way in deciding the title.

Good evening, gents.

I've noticed over the past week, or so...that the posts from supporters of other teams are becoming quite vile in their rants.
Does anyone know if there are some bad drugs out there?

Seriously, I read these posts from such as Malloy, and a smile comes to my face. In one post he tries to be the symbol of piety and in another sounds like a raving lunatic from Hades.

Whatever will they sound like if we win all the competitions we are still in?

Best of Luck to the Gers. Best of Luck also to all the other teams whose supporters have no other activity than ranting on here and getting threads shut down.

Lighten up Scotland has a team in a European final, and how good will it be for Scotland if the Gers bring home the UEFA Cup to Scotland for the first time.
63

Brother Walfrid,

09/05/2008 15:41:15
It doesn't really put me up or down that Rangers made the UEFA final.

S'ppose the fact that we've got that t-shirt might make it all the more palatable, but that's speculation.

The spl is all I'm really interested in, and I can't see Rangers getting 9 points away from home to Motherwell, St Mirren and Aberdeen...a slip up tomorrow at home to Dundee U would be extremely welcome if a tad unexpected.
64

Red Alert,

Just for the record. I, and many other Mancunians, are thankful that the SCUM element of the Rangers support are returning to your country.

The scenes greeting people in the city this morning are an appalling reflection on your city.

Shame on the blue half of Glasgow. Shame on you.
