BERTI Vogts has offered to help Scotland manager George Burley plot the downfall of Iceland following defeat to Macedonia in Saturday's World Cup qualifying opener.
The pressure is on for Burley to deliver all three points in Reykjavik on Wednesday and former national team boss Vogts is willing to hand over his own dossier to help out.

Iceland provided Vogts with his first win of what proved to be a disastrous rein with the Scots and he also managed to earn a draw there just a few weeks ago with Azerbaijan.

"We went up to Reykjavik with Azerbaijan only three weeks ago and I am sure Scotland must be capable of winning there," the German told the Scottish Daily Mail.

"I really only have about 12 players to realistically call on for international duty but we drew 1-1 and might well have come home with a victory.

"Iceland are not as good as they were a few years ago when we were in their qualifying section.

"If anyone at the Scotland camp wants information on Iceland, then I'm more than willing to help.

"I had a nice time in Scotland, despite what some people think, and I'd be happy for them to call me."

Bertie has had to wait a while to be able to stick the boot in, but when the opportunity arrived he has applied the boot with gusto! To think we could have had Souness or Dalglish in the hot seat. Regardless of what you think of them as coaches, their very presence in the dressing room would inspire any Scotsman.

Anyone have the stats for Vogts record in competitive matches at hand? I can find his overall record but nothing for the games that count. Would agree that for the most part his reign was a disaster but his role in giving young players a chance and a lot of experience cannot be discounted.

As for Iceland, anything less than 3 points and we'll be waiting another couple of years for a shot at coming home early! We have to start with Maloney and Commons out wide, Fletcher and either Hartley or Robson beside him, with McFadden up front alongside Boyd or Fletcher(I'd go for the Hibs man simply because he is playing more often and is a bit more mobile). No point in not going for it, even this early in the campaign.

Defeat on Wednesday and the Celtic lads should do some serious thinking about where their responsibilities lie.

I agree that McCormack should be in the squad but you can't deny that Scotland looked far more dangerous with Maloney and Commons on the park.

Maloney may not have had much football but he has experience at international and Champions League level, and has scored goals at those levels too. How many other players have that?

I think that they played a more attack minded game in the second half and pushed them back but not because Maloney was on. He is probably the best pick of the Celtic contingent but the rest of them are only getting a game cos they play for Celtic. Players should be picked on merit and recent form not reputation and status.

In regards to you're post yesterday, WC over for Scotland.

FFS man we were poor on Saturday we lost, its one game, out of a group of qualifiers.

We keep reading posts knocking WS and Eck with their 4-5-1 system when they were in charge, but at least it kept us close in matches and an occasional good result.

Just maybe they were playing the best system for the players at their disposal.

Burley has buckled to pressure from the press and pundits to play a more open system when clearly we do not have the horses to go toe to toe with most nations.

This is the time to back the squad and not slag them off after one defeat in qualifying. With Scotlands best 11 against Macedonia we will beat them by 2 in Glasgow.

Some of the posts have a familiar ring to them, much like the tic threads after the 4-2 match, first loss and they were calling for WGS to go.

Sad isn't it.

Even above the cocophony of noise within an elated Celtic Park, there was still one "girly scream" which resonated above all else.

It was also the only time I seen him run all of last season!

I think you have to look at the trajectory since Burley came in : ever downward, and Burley himself has gone from being a confident looking bore to a beseiged bore....I get the impression several changes of underwear were required in the build up to Macedonia.

But we were lucky to draw with N.I., the team seems souless, flat, and lacking in belief.

The wheels are off and we are crashing as we speak...brace yourself for impact Brian, it's coming on Wednesday night.

There is a bit of Irony in the press reporting of Saturdays game. Surely Macedonia, in sitting back and squeezing the game, relying on luck and poor finishing were "Bravehearts" full of "Pride" and "Passion" for the jersey?

I mean, twice we were horsed by France and got away with it, and called all those things. Credit to Macedonia, surely?

Also, does anyone have a quick history of their recent home results? I was told on Saturday night they have held or beaten a lot of top teams there?

Daillyman,

Helter again WS and Eck slagged for their tactics in certain quarters but it brought some decent results.

Burley has bent to the press and public to play a more open system and has had little success. If he wants any advice maybe he should call WS and Eck and find out what system might give us a chance away on Wednesday.
50

Rosscobhoy,

54 - yep MIGHTY Celtic.

Can't help but laugh everytime I here ReaRangers fanz discussing current captain and team and measuring them against past hero's of theirs..

FFS Captain Glaicket has been pivotal in a team which has win only 2 of the last 8 league titles.

The ReaRangers players who (we are told) would have made a difference for Scotland on Saturday were the guys who got pumped out of Europe by Kaunas.

COnsidering that these guys continually thumb their noses at joing Scotland squads and clearly give don't give a jack about the National Team.

How could they possibly have influenced a game against a better team with lesser effort than they did at full tilt when Kaunas pumped them?

The ReaRanging of the ReaRangers facts is getting really funny now.

Macedonia were not sitting back during the first half, only after Commens and Maloney came on to play the wide positions did we come into the match, yet still created very little in clear scoring chances in the final 3rd of the park during the 2nd half.

Advice from Eck ?

We got a very flooky win in Paris with Eck, but apart from that, Eck's tenure looks distinctly gash.

wE WERE BEATEN 2V0 by Georgia on a night when they fielded two 16 year olds and a 17 year old, and at a time when qualification was already out of reach for them ...and they put us away alright.

The win in Paris was an unbelieveable result, but Craig Gordon was in stunning form, the French squandered a van load of chances and then McFadden pulled a rabbit out of the hat...we just got lucky that night and should be slow to credit Eck with any managerial wizardry as a result.

I'd probably agree with you and i think in your last 2 posts you've summed up where it went wrong. Burley talked of attacking teams but essentially went with a defensive line up in an offensive formation. Robson and Brown are not wide men, even if they are competent in those positions. When we attacked with 2 natural wide attackers we created more chances. The final ball was missing but at least we looked like doing something.

My point exactly thank you. Yes we were lucky against France both matches, but the system worked, players knew their roles.

I have never said we played terrific but the team achieved results and at this level points are what count.

So now after one competitive match you want Burley out (was not my choice from the beginning, would have preferred Levein) who do you suggest take over the job?

Try supporting the squad instead of constantly slagging the team, the qualifiers are far from over.

This is the crux for George Burley.

There is a definate clique evolving as some ReaRangers players are clearly undermining his authority. Misguidedly believing that the Scotland team should suffer due to their perceived injustice over last seasons second league extension.

Again, a ReaRanging of facts as both Smith and Peat backed the decision to the second extension. The SPL vetoed.

Another example of "Walters Mantra" - "Its ok to fail cos yer tired" carrying forward to this season.

Burley has to stand up to them and realise that despite the laptop support remaining 100%, the majority of the tartan army remain completely against any appeasement of the club and its supporters who in one single night done their best to destroy the reputation which they built.

This is Burleys big test.

If he stands up to them he has the support of the tartan army.

The SPL showed that you can face down ReaRangers and the media and escape with victory.

The floor is yours George!

Good Luck!

They looked like world beaters when we capitulated over there and got humped 5-0.

We re-grouped and humped them 4-0 at Celtic Park.

At least Artmedia didn't have guff like Broadfoot, Poohpac and Weir in their team...

Possible a lesson for us all to learn....

Make no mistake. Scott Brown was to blame for the Macedonia goal on Saturday.

It was his dreadful wayward pass that led to the freekick that they scored from.

If it's CL stats yer keen on....maybe you explain why Rangers players have won 5 games out of 30 in the CL under Wattie....

Or 3 games from 12 in their last 2 attempts....

In fact Rearrangers have won 11 games out of 48 attempts in the CL?....

Wattie has never progressed out the group stage?

As stats go....I'd prefer our qulaifying stats than those that got you pumped oot!

The clue to your stupidity is contained in the line in your post...

"the freekick they scored from"

Very python-esque!

Nice one Paul. Your intelligence probably surpasses the Jade Goody level.

But then again, maybe not.

Vogts to offer his help !?

BAW...HAW..NAW hanhanhan..haha thrrrppp..KAK..

If we`re not careful,"Walter"-The Man With No Surname-and whose name is now synonomous with treachery and traitoristic traits towards Scotland his country of birth, will be attempting to offer his tuppence worth of deserted opinion.

Mind you,he probably knows better than to try that nonsense.

Doesn`t he.

I mean, does anyone remember the disaster when he lead his troops to submissively humiliate Rearrangerz against FC Tiddlers Kaunus.

We are definately better off with Burley.
Not half.

I see you've avoided discussing the horrendous Rearrangers CL stats in post 120......wise move....

But seriously your empty and punchless retort in 148 wasn't worth the effort.....

As spanners go....you're up there with the best of them...

Ps. Are you related to nineinro?
