Athletics: Delhi hopeful Murray aims to be among the top Brass in Belgium

Despite dominating the domestic distance running scene for the last year, Freya Murray (Edinburgh AC) is still not guaranteed her place in the Scotland team for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Having achieved one qualifying time in the 10,000 metres and one in the 5,000m, Murray could be caught between a rock and a hard place as the selection criteria stipulate a minimum of two qualifying standards per event.

The 26-year-old Heriot-Watt graduate could solve all her problems in Brasschaat, Belgium this weekend, however, if she can again run under 15:35.00 for the shorter event. Murray will be joined by Laura Kenney, another Scottish contender close to the standard, though in Kenney's case she would have to find a second high-quality 5000m race before the end of the month as she has still to record her first valid time.

Other Scottish Delhi contenders will be heading for British Milers Club meetings tomorrow.

Solihull is the venue for the latest BMC promotion where Capital 1,500m hope Darren Gauson will make his bid.

The Edinburgh AC runner set a personal best of 3:42.16 in Flanders last Saturday behind Capital physio Ali Hay and was just 0.46sec outside the Games standard which Hay managed for a second time.

Gauson could set up a fascinating clash with Hay for the 1,500m title in the Scottish Championships at Pitreavie tomorrow week. Also in tomorrow's race will be fellow Scot Ross Toole (Kilbarchan) while Corstorphine's Doug Selman is in the C race.

Nicola Gauld (EAC) is entered in a good quality women's 1,500m having missed the UK Women's league match to run for Scotland in Flanders last Saturday. Clubmate Sarah Hood goes in the B race. Mark Mitchell (EAC), Graham Oudney (Pitreavie) and Ian Munro (Cambuslang) are three more Scots Midlands bound, in their case for the 800m.
