THE Scottish Rugby Union has responded to criticism over its decision to drop clubs out of the Scottish Cup to ensure it can be completed by pointing out that the move was made by a committee of club representatives.
The competition, now known as the Scottish Hydro Electric Cup, has been embroiled in controversy in recent seasons with clubs threatening to withdraw because of the extra pressures it places on the league championships, and the SRU last year reque
sting it be shelved for a season to allow time to plan a new format.

Clubs voted that down as the cup has proved a major success for many across the country since its introduction in 1995-96. Debates continue over the way forward, but the recent winter freeze has brought the issue to a head with the prospect of the Murrayfield cup finals day, on 10 May, being postponed. The SRU responded by dropping St Boswells and Cumbernauld out of the cup and into a subsidiary competition this week, which brought condemnation from the two clubs.

In a statement issued yesterday, the SRU explained that the decision was taken by the Championship Committee, which is chaired by Sheriff David Mackie, and comprises an elected club representative from each strata of the domestic game, including referees, women's and schools rugby.

The SRU stated: "The decision taken ... was a difficult one to make, but one which has been taken with the best interest of all of Scottish club rugby in mind."

The union added that it had pushed clubs to fulfil fixtures midweek under floodlights, with six clubs agreeing to drop out of the cup because they could not fit it in. That left two ties – Cumbernauld v East Kilbride and St Boswells v Linlithgow – where agreement was not reached by the clubs. The committee decided to drop Cumbernauld and St Boswells, as the lower-league clubs, to the Bowl.

The SRU insisted that the cup would now be completed by its May final date, but there is little doubt that the pressure is again on to find a workable league and cup structure for the future.

While very sympathetic to the delima the weather created and understand that an very difficult decsion had to be made I find the line "It was the clubs that did it" rather tiresome.

As someone works in an environment where paid officals support volunteers in the decsion making process I think it is incredible that the "SRU" can issue a statement distancing themsleves from some unpleasentness which they have to have been involved in.

I would ask of the "SRU" what contingency plans had you worked out to help the "Club Reps" if this situation arose.

That is beyond just passing the buck that is.

Loads of warning. This was sent out on 12th February...
Within days clubs are told they are out. How fair is that?

Following a meeting of the Championship Committee (CC) that took place earlier this week please find below a position statement on the current fixtures backlog

The recent sustained period of bad weather has caused the postponement of so many cup and championship matches that the Championship Committee anticipates being faced with the unprecedented requirement of devising a means of resolving cup fixtures by means other than being able to allow matches to be played. This is because the standby dates not otherwise taken up by championship fixtures are all but exhausted and the Cup competition is constrained by the final, semi final and quarter final deadlines. Much will depend upon the weather impact this coming week-end but it is likely that this issue will require to be addressed in the course of next week. To this end the Committee has arranged to meet next week in an endeavour to be as pro-active as possible in minimising the impact of the many postponements.

There are two means by which clubs can help to reduce the anticipated difficulty. Firstly by using every possible endeavour to co-operate with each other in playing off outstanding fixtures on alternative, agreed dates, midweek if necessary and under floodlights if available at any ground reasonably accessible and available to clubs. Secondly the Committee wishes to make clear that if an agreement is reached between clubs faced with insurmountable fixture difficulties that one will concede the round to the other the club conceding the fixture will automatically be put into the lower bowl or shield competition, whichever is appropriate, as if the fixture had been played.

The method of resolving unplayed fixtures has not been decided upon but clubs will doubtless agree that the playing of fixtures or their resolution by agreement will be preferable.
