It's mince and chapatis as chefs spice up St Andrew's Day

HAGGIS pakora may be the most famous example of Scottish- Indian cuisine, but it is not the only one.
Yesterday, chefs created such delicacies as scallops cooked in a tandoor oven, naan bread stuffed with smoked haddock and curried mince and tatties.

The "fusion food" was cooked up to celebrate St Andrew's Day tomorrow, and to highlight the benefits - in terms of the arts, business, religious tolerance and diversification - brought by the estimated 55,000 people of Indian origin living in Scotland.

Nicola Sturgeon, the health secretary, joined members of the community to launch a St Andrew's Day food festival at the restaurants Suruchi and Suruchi Too in Edinburgh.

As the MSP for Glasgow Govan, home to the largest Asian community in the country, Ms Sturgeon is a big fan of authentic Indian food. She said the mixture of Scottish and Indian ingredients was an example of how the two countries could share knowledge, adding: "I have never met more patriotic Scots than in that [Asian] community because they have chosen to make Scotland their home, so they take a pride in it that perhaps those of us born here do not have."

She went on: "We celebrate St Andrew's Day this year at a time of growing confidence, there is a feel-good feeling, something exciting in the air. I think one of the things that has contributed over the years to Scottish confidence and feeling more comfortable in our own skin is the wonderful multiculturalism we have been privileged to enjoy here in Scotland. Our cultures are becoming more integrated and both are being enhanced.

"Nowhere is this more evident than the fusion of Scottish ingredients with Indian recipes and I cannot think of a better way to celebrate St Andrew's Day."

Herman Rodrigues, Suruchi's owner, said Indian food was no longer just "post-lager entertainment", as diners become more discerning and demand authentic dishes. He said: "Our master chefs experimented with vegetarian haggis, venison, turnips, parsnips, Arbroath smokies and salmon. The only thing the chefs did not improve on was deep-fried Mars bar."

Steady on with the effusive "patriotic Scots" and "wonderful multiculturalism" thing, Nicola. We appreciate the cuisine but don't go overboard. Good Indian food is very good but let's not overdo the overblown feelgood thing. Not while there are mad Islamists in the mix to spoil the party.

But Nicola - this is Scotland - let Scot's decide the rate of exposure to other cultures lest we as Scots end up with a biometric ID card culture. Let's get comfortable with each other. The way immigration seems to happen in the U.K. is we have wave after wave of foreign folks arriving and needing sorted (in a helpful sense).

Scots are a hospitipal folk and we want to remain so. Growth through uncontrolled immigration into Scotland, however, is not in our long term best interests. At this point in Scotland's history I think we need to sit back and reflect on where we want Scotland to be 100 years from now.

Ah'll be mair impressed if the SNP government presented a vision ae Scotland fur ma great grand kids (who ur likely to be arriving soon) thin masel.

Remember - it's better to do nothing than to do the wrong thing with the best intentions.

The SNP won't be happy until Scots culture is as diluted as English, i.e. barely recognisable. Leicester, Birmingham, Southampton will soon have the indigenous population in the minority. Let's learn the lessons from down south before we continue with this apparent obsession with proving how right on and happy clappy we are. Yes, it's been nice to have our culinary and cultural horizons broadened, but the incomers have had the benefits of living in this country as well. They should remember that.

Well boys and girls, its getting close to the great demonstration of people who are fed up with the Anti Scottish bias shown by the Newspapers like this rag the Hootsman. Surely these traitors will be remembered come Independance day.

Yes Scotland needs a free and honest opinion, and in the past this was a mantle held quite proudly by the media. Of course that was before the likes of Thomsons, Murdoch and the sleazy Scotsman. Its tax exile owners dare to challenge the will of the Scottish People by constantly manipulating the truth by including all of societies ills as the fault of our SNP Scottish Government. Our political opposition have stolen, lied, ignored, manipulated and betrayed us the people with their Unionist Lies.

Scotlands establishment need to begin to realise that our demands equal the removal of the foreign governments right to decide our fate. Yes many of you bloodsuckers now choose to live in tax exile, but still attempt to control the Scottish People for your own selfish gains. As i have already stated wake up before your connections to Scotland become no more than a faded memory.

We will mark St Andrews Day as a starting point of our demand that those who choose to make their income and future in Scotland, do so with passion for their People and Country before loyalty to a dying institution which was known inaccurately as being a United Kingdom. It never existed in many of our ane kinds lifes except as a weapon to subjugate the Scottish Nation.

She is just another short term politician looking after number one.
It always intrigues me why the diversity and multiculturalism agenda proposed by her and the media never extends to our ignored , underfunded and beautiful indigenous culture . It is just cultural levelling of the worst type because it assumes the reader is stupid and gullable and promotes foreign cultures at the expense of our own ancient and unique culture.

Isn't "curry day" one of the favourite days for crews working on the oil rigs in the North Sea.

With Scotland being so cold and damp and dreary AT TIMES a nice infusion of spice and heat into traditional Scots dishes may heal what ails ya.

Some of ignorant xenophobia indicated by some posters shows there are still knuckle-dragging, drooling troglodytes lurking in these forums and throughout Scotland.
