The secret's out – flu more deadly than terror attack

BRITAIN is most at risk from another terrorist attack on public transport, but a flu pandemic would have an impact on far more people, a government analysis warned yesterday.
It published its previously secret "national risk register" which sets out the most significant threats to the country over the next five years.

A flu pandemic is deemed to be likely to impact on the greatest number of people, with half the population likely to become infected and leaving between 50,000 and 750,000 dead.

But attacks on public transport, at a time the UK's terror threat status is "severe", are judged more likely, in the wake of the 7 July attacks in London in 2005 and those in Moscow and Madrid in 2004.

This is due to the combination of the large number of passengers and the "open" nature of train and underground rail networks, contrasting with the high levels of security at airports.

The report states: "Of the different malicious attacks outlined in this document, conventional attacks on transport systems are judged to be some of the more likely to occur; although the likelihood of them affecting any one individual is still very low."

An attempt to cause chaos with a computer virus is regarded as the second most likely threat to the country.

The document compares 12 major risks in terms of their potential impact and likelihood of them happening. Attacks on crowded places and severe weather are also more likely than a flu pandemic, though experts believe there is a "high probability" of this occurring.

A flu pandemic would have the widest impact on the public – there were three in the 20th century, with 228,000 Britons dying from an outbreak of "Spanish flu" in 1918 to 1919 – followed by coastal flooding and major industrial accidents.

While the government holds sufficient quantities of the Tamiflu vaccine to treat one-quarter of the population, the concern is that a new flu strain could spread rapidly at a time it would take four to six months to develop new vaccines.

Other concerns include major transport accidents, such as the Kegworth plane crash in 1989 in which 47 passengers died, animal disease, such as foot-and-mouth outbreaks and inland flooding.

The government's aim in publishing the report is to increase public awareness of the threats the country faces and to encourage public bodies, businesses and individuals to prepare for worst-case scenarios.

The security minister, Lord West of Spithead, rejected suggestions that publication of the register would simply cause unnecessary alarm.

"I have great faith in the public and they would prefer to have information because the thing that causes fear is ignorance of things," he said.

They withhold the real truth, as the next "pandemic" is Bird related!

If one has followed the whole story (not in the Scotsman)

One would 'Know' theses things!

Keep the population scared, that way they accept all manner of abuse by the rulers. A tactic employed by Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin and Nu Lab.

The 'flu' is nature's way of controlling our over-population; as are war and famine and other diseases. Take your pick, ladies and gents. We get the planet we deserve.

Here we go again; so blowing up a bus can be equated, to millions dead by flu.
Looking at death rates for bird flu—many millions could die.

Terrorism is psychological. In effect they cause a major accident. There are real risks of major accidents all the time regardless of terrorists.
We have just had a major rail accident in the Czech Rep---not terrorists.

I suppose it keeps "The Boyz" in jobs and funding by spouting off now and then to keep their profile high enough for contunued funding !
Meeanwhile we have thousands of cattle slaughtered every year because of TB. No Vaccine, no badger cull, no action. Blue Tongue is still being battled against and F&M lurks in the background. Time to get things in a decent order of priority methinks, and address those issues which exist and are not fantasy.

Who said so?
The sleazy, lying, corrupt New Labour Party's financial backers and friends in the lucrative pharmaceuotical industry who have all to profit by; and almost nothing to lose with their usual regular spate off urgent health scaremongering epidemic warnings?
Asian Flu! Bird Flu etc.! Blue Tongue and any other kind of flu they can invent!
Has the recent measles scare directed at ordinary families been to enable the companies too get rid off their surplus vacinating supplies?
Why is it that the children off the elite)and the wealthy do not have the same vaccine as ordinary children?
Do these companies actually experiment with many off their scaremongering tactics and remedies on ordinary people or, is their intentions genuine?
What about foot and mouth disease which MANY farmers welcomed as they were showered with more than plenty of taxpayers cash to compensate them! How many off these recipients were responsible initially for the spread of this disease? Or, shouldn't we dare ask?
TB? The recent revival of this dreadful disease which afflicted and decimated so many poor UK families pre - war;and still does abroad,is the result off what?
It is like the daily dose off a terrorist threat we have come to expect since the death and destruction that resulted from the World Trade Centre in the USA due to Bush and his servile partner Blair's death and estruction meted out to the innocent people of Iraq and Afghanistan!
SOME DAY WE MIGHT GET TO REALISE WE ARE GOVERNED GLOBALLY BY A SHOWER OF LEGALIAED CROOKS!

11 Wattie, has the failure and collapse of global Marxism/Socialism upset you by any chance?
The ethical pharmaceutical industry is barred by law from open communication with the public. They are allowed to do so only through the medical profession and regulatory bodies.
Scares of this nature are driven mainly by the popular media, and rely on widespread ignorance of basic science. Where invisible, "dread hazards" such as micro-organisms, chemicals or radiation are involved they cannot fail to score a hit.
Compiling a "Risk Register" by assessing the principle risks (threats) is sound risk management practice for any organisation/business. Had our major financial institutions carried this out effectively they might have avoided the current difficulties they find themselves in.
Governments have always done this but in the new spirit of openess it is now being made public. The key point is however, the media is generally not mature enough to treat it in a serious manner, and of course, the conspiracy theorists like Wattie have a field day.

It's in the Government's interests to keep us in a state of fear. The Government is our portrays itself as our saviour, but only if we give up our liberties and accept their tyranny.

Dr Blockbuster aka Vince,

The threat of an outbreak involving mutated avian flu is very real but the UK has decided to rely on Tamiflu rather than develop a vaccination.

Unlike antibiotics, which only act against bacteria, antiviral drugs are not that effective and, crucially, they have to be taken at exactly the right time — at the very onset of symptoms, not too early, not too late.

Common sense would suggest this is not going to happen in practice. Anyone who sneezes will demand the drug while anyone who waits until they are sure they have flu will be beyond saving.

We SHOULD be worried.
