JEREMY Paxman has risked the wrath of his female colleagues by suggesting that it is men who are being discriminated against at the BBC.
The Newsnight presenter, 58, suggested that white, middle-class men were overlooked in favour of women by his employer.

His controversial comments were played at a pre-recorded interview to the Edinburgh International Television Festival.

Paxma
n, 58, said: "Do I think it's a man's world in television? That is the most ridiculous question I have been asked all week.

"The worst thing you can be in this industry is a middle-class white male. If any middle-class white male I come across says he wants to enter television I say: 'Give up all hope.' They've no chance."

He listed five female executives in the industry as examples: Jana Bennett, director of BBC Vision; Janice Hadlow, controller of BBC4; Dorothy Byrne, head of news, current affairs and documentaries at Channel 4; Jay Hunt, controller of BBC 1; and Dawn Airey, soon to be chief executive and chair of Five.

Broadcaster Mariella Frostrup dismissed the political interviewer's comments.

She said: "He lists five women because he couldn't possibly name all the men in positions of power in TV because he would be there all bloody day.

"He talks about middle-class white men being a beleaguered species on television. Well, excuse me, but Jonathan Ross, Jeremy on Newsnight. Look at the Today programme, Have I Got News For You, Newsnight."

Frostrup, who said she was once told by a male producer that her breastfeeding schedule was "inconvenient" for the BBC show she was working on, added: "It seems to me that TV is a fantastic place for middle-class white males.

"They are very much judged to be the people imbued with a sort of gravitas that women are still struggling to achieve.

"The day that they find a direct causal link between bleach and brain power I will admit you can link blonde women together. It's not just blondes, brunettes that present news … For God's sake, we're not cattle."

That'll be why they chuck out women as they become more mature and therefore no longer 'dolly birds' but hang on to old, wrinky blokes (well, like Paxo, actually!!) until they decide to retire.

Living next to a middle-class white BBC male it should be law that they are discriminated against. This man has or had a responsible news editing position in the BBC which was abused in the output of false news during the war in Iraq. In his personal life he is a devious, dishonest & stupid, & displays violence if his arrogance and pomposity is called into question, relying on the fact of his employment in the BBC to win friends & influence people locally. Indeed I would say the dishonest practices of the BBC recently exposed in the newspapers could have been predicted if this individual's general arrogance was anything to go by. Paxman may be right about the promotion of women in the BBC but I suspect that's because the quality of the men there is so low. Not that the women are any better from the sounds of things. The whole corporation needs to be purged, in good Soviet style, and the trials broadcast.

Paxman is a rude, ignorant, arrogant, pompous self publicist. He has made a lot of money with his cynical and ill mannered inteviewing style style. His sort have damaged the cause of inteligent journalism.

I don't want his barracking, bullying, argumentative and interrupting interrogations of elected people. I want to hear the what the politician has to say and then make my own mind up.

Problem is that these sort of bullies rise to the top. Paxman is very clever but possesses little wisdom.

Humphreys and Paxman between them have played a major part in undermining democracy.

The trouble with hearing what a politician has to say is that, unless that politician is interrogated as a prime suspect they will say nothing of consequence.
That's why we have Paxmans and Bashirs. Pay your money and make your choice.

Like him, or loathe him, Paxman does have a point.

As far as I'm concerned, these days the letters BBC stand for Black Broadcasting Corporation.

The amount of non-ethnic Brits reading the news etc, is vastly out of proportion to their current numbers in our country, and present a very skewed picture of British society to ethnic Brits, and indeed the rest of the world.

My blood still boils every time I remember Greg Dyke's famous remark that the BBC was "hideously white".

Had he substituted white with a different colour, all hell would have broken loose.

Anyway, have the Paxmans' of this world finally woken up to the fact that it's their necks on the line now too, and not just the poor (former) working class?

then if the interview peters out with nothing of consequence being said - does that not speak volumes? There is no excuse for rude interrupting.

Paxman is certainly a bit rude at times, and perhaps a bit arrogant but he is most definately not ignorant. He is a very clever individual and it is a breath of fresh air to have him thoroughly question the lying barstards who govern this country. His questioning of Tony Blair a while ago about the number of illegal immigrants in this country was a good example because it showed up Bliar for what he was.

#9 Vincent-W: If you are happy to take politicians at their word, expecting them to offer information then carry on the crusade for hat doffing and nodding politely.

Spot on.

Why shouldn't the BBC be 95% white? This is still an overwhelmingly white country, right? Why should we be embarrased by that fact?

And yes, we are being told subliminally and overtly, that we, the natives of this land, are no good, tainted by some nameless guilt, that we should move over, move out, give up.

The BBC has gone from underpinning the British Isles, to undermining them.

Douglas,Bathgate ,

of course I'm not happy to take all politicians at their word!

But I do object strongly to the cynical approach typified by Paxman which I believe is deeply damaging to democracy. Largely owing to his style of interrogation we have a burgeoning cynicism of politics.

I would rather see reasoned debate between politicians than have to put up with another minute of that ignorant opinionated oaf Paxman.

I would then be able to vote whoever I thought could govern best - I didn't vote for Paxman and I automatically turn him off when he pollutes my TV screen.

10 paxman IS an ignoramus - witness his witless thoughts on burns the other day. he's a prize w@nker and shouldn't be coining it like he is.
dalek what the fook is an 'ethnic' brit? your post implies that an 'ethnic brit' is someone who is white. that is stupid as i suspect are you.

JayDeeTee,

#17. Paxman is a matter of opinion mate but you are a rude barstard and pretty stupid yourself if you can't work out how to use the CAPS key to start your sentences with a capital letter, or to even punctuate your sentences properly. Work out the difference between writing properly in a post like this and sending a purile message similar to a mobile phone text.

hey jay i wasn't being rude to you, but to dalek, and called him stupid based on a cursory reading of his posts today which reveal an obsession with the plight of what he calls 'ethnic britons'. this makes no sense to me, so i called him on it.
paxman is indeed a matter of opinion, i merely submit that someone who dismisses burns's poetry as 'sentimental doggerel' dosen't know his @rse from a hole in the ground.
i don't bother with grammattical convention as my posts should be read more as stream - of consciousness poetry than prose.

#17/20 You the Muppet.

The only stupid people are those who would put other nations and ethnicities before their own.

The only stupid people are those who would hand over control of their own lands to aliens from afar without so much as a whimper, let alone a fight.

Are you one of these stupid people, or are you one who has benefited from this stupidity?
