MINISTERS have signalled that a long-planned cross-Glasgow rail link to enable trains to run direct from Edinburgh to the west coast could be approved by being built in phases, The Scotsman has learned.
The Glasgow Crossrail is seen as the "missing link" in Scotland's rail network, but it has been delayed by cost and doubts over its feasibility.

However, Stewart Stevenson, the transport minister, is understood to have told backers of the project that it may have more chance of winning government funding if the cost was spread.

Passengers currently have to transfer between Queen Street and Central stations.

A spokesman for Mr Stevenson said a business case from SPT was expected "very soon".

Wonderful reporting by the Scotsman again, I see:

"MINISTERS have signalled that a long-planned cross-Glasgow rail link to enable trains to run direct from Edinburgh to the west coast..."

I assume they mean the AYRSHIRE coast, in the case of Glasgow Crossrail.

Once the Airdrie-Bathgate line is reopened/upgraded (a project already underway), trains will run direct between Edinburgh and Helensburgh (which, last time I looked, was on the west coast).

Trouble with this plan is that it takes passengers away from Glasgow Central (Scotland's busiest station), where many want to go, on a slow tour of the Gorbals and the inner East End, where they don't. OK, it ends up in Glasgow Queen Street Low Level eventually but it would have been much quicker to go to Central and walk...
