COMMUTERS on the main Edinburgh-Glasgow rail line and the Edinburgh-Dunblane route face five days of disruption during work on reopening the Airdrie-Bathgate railway.
Trains will be half as frequent and will be diverted, adding nearly 50 per cent to journey times in October.

The work on a junction on the line at Newbridge, west of Edinburgh, will also disrupt trains over a series of weekends between June and October.

The Edinburgh-Bathgate line will be closed for two weeks in July and ten days in October.

The work will increase the Edinburgh-Bathgate line from single to double track from October, which is expected to improve train punctuality and reliability.

NO PAIN - NO GAIN! Some short-term inconvenience (at weekends) for a most welcome LONG-TERM gain, ie a doubling of the (track &) frequency of rail services to/from Bathgate to every 15 minutes, extended through to Airdrie-Glasgow-Helensburgh ANDWITH ELECRIC TRAINS ALL THE WAY!! This 'sparks effect' will again rejuvenate West Lothian (for a second time) and North Lanarkshire as did the reopening of the Livingston North/Bathgate line in 1986!
