Brown denies Scottish referendum declaration

GORDON Brown today moved to defend and clarify comments made this week by Wendy Alexander about a Scottish independence referendum.
The Prime Minister denied that Ms Alexander, the Scottish Labour leader, had called for an immediate referendum on Scottish independence. Later today Ms Alexander defended her position and again rejected calls for her to step down as leader.

The scene earlier in the House of Commons was a classic Labour-Conservative verbal slugfest. When challenged by Tory leader David Cameron on Ms Alexander's comments, Mr Brown said: "That's not what she has said."

An incredulous Mr Cameron hit back by accusing the Prime Minister of "losing touch with reality" if he did not think this was the case.

Mr Cameron said following last Thursday's English and Welsh local elections the Prime Minister had said he would listen and lead.

"So let's start with an issue of leadership," Mr Cameron said during Question Time. "Labour's leader in Scotland, Wendy Alexander, says there should be a referendum now on Scottish independence. Do you agree with her?"

To Tory jeers, Mr Brown replied: "That is not what she has said.

"The Conservative Party, the Liberal Party and the Labour Party have joined together in setting up the Calman review, the commission on devolution. I hope we can see progress in that commission and we will review the progress before making any further decisions," Mr Brown said. "I thought that was the policy of the Conservative Party, who supported the commission."

Mr Cameron told him: "I think you are losing touch with reality. Wendy Alexander said: 'I don't fear the verdict of the Scottish people – bring it on.' What else could that possibly mean? So do you agree with her or not. It's not much leadership if no one's really following you."

Mr Brown said the commission had been set up to review the progress of devolution.

"I believe all parties in the House will welcome the fact that it is looking at all these issues. When we review the progress of the commission we can make further decisions," he said.

Mr Brown went on: "What the leader of the Labour Party in Scotland was pointing to was the hollowness of the SNP that said they wanted independence, said they wanted it immediately and now wanted to postpone a referendum until 2010-11.

"That's what she was pointing out and she was making it clear that what the SNP was doing was against their election manifesto."

Mr Cameron said: "The one thing people thought about you is that you were quite a good political fixer. You've now lost control of the Scottish Labour Party."

Deputy leader of the Scottish National Party's parliamentary group Stewart Hosie later raised a point of order accusing Mr Brown of inadvertently misleading the House over the Scottish Government's plans for a referendum.

Mr Hosie told MPs: "The Prime Minister said the Scottish Government was seeking to 'postpone a referendum in 2010/11' and that the Scottish Government was acting 'against its manifesto'.

"That manifesto was explicit in setting out a timetable for that referendum in 2010 and in misrepresenting this, I fear the Prime Minister has inadvertently misled the House.

"Far from the referendum being delayed or a manifesto promise broken it is one the Scottish Government intends to keep."

Speaker Michael Martin said the point of view of the Scottish Government and First Minister had now been put on the record and matters should be left there.

Speaking to BBC Scotland after the Commons session, Ms Alexander insisted Mr Brown was fully behind her attempts to expose the "hollowness" of the SNP's stance on a referendum.

When asked if she intended to quit, Ms Alexander responded: "Not at all."

Asked if her position was untenable, as claimed by SNP deputy leader Nicola Sturgeon, Ms Alexander insisted: "I have the support of the Prime Minister, the Labour group of MSPs, of many party members, and indeed the people of Scotland, who feel they have the right to have a say on this matter.

"And it is wrong for the SNP to claim they favour independence but not to bring forward a choice for the Scottish people in a referendum before the end of this Parliament."

Ms Sturgeon was quoted as saying "Wendy Alexander's position is now completely untenable. At a stroke, Gordon Brown has destroyed her leadership – and placed serious questions over his own, given the number of inaccuracies in his PMQ answers."

They will both be totally discredited in the press for this and both Cameron and Salmond will jump on this opportunity. One of the has to back down and i would guess Wendy now has no option to resign is she has no support from her leader (haha) what other option is left open to her?

Where have all the unionists gone that were shouting and supporting Wendy's call for a referendum? It's all gone deadly quiet!

Now that Gordon has given Wendy the most embarassing political slap i have ever seen i presume you will all be against the idea of a referendum now?

We await your posts secure in the knowledge that Alex will bring it forward in 2010 as promised LOL

oh dear, there's blood in the water and the sharks are moving in.

FMQ's tomorrow followed by Newsnicht & Politics Now.

Wendy is out the door, she can't survive continued poor performances and episodes like this...... the really hilarious thing though is that there isn't anyone to replace her and she's now committed to supporting the SNP's 2010 Referendum.

Is there nothing this minority Government cannot do?

10

acanthus,

07/05/2008 15:40:34
Can anyone recall how many in the Labour Party were behind her and their names?

SNP Manifesto 2007

"....Publication of a White Paper detailing the concept of Scottish independence in the modern world as part of preparations for offering Scots the opportunity to decide on independence in a referendum, with a likely date of 2010....."

Stuart Hosie has a valid point!

Wendy lies on Newsnicht saying that Gordon brown backs her position

Gordon Brown lies in Westminster, purposely misleading the house on the SNp's Manifesto commitments which were published over 12 months ago.

What a shambles.

Labour's Little Big Horn?

12

14

The Former Mr. Angry,

Perth 07/05/2008 15:53:42
First she says weeks ago she's against a referendum, now she says time for one. And claims publicly on Newsnight that she has consulted Gordon Brown. Then Gordon on PMQs today denies she's said that (re referendum) and says that further decisions will come following the Calman commission report - i.e. a slap down for Wendy.

In the meantime her Calman colleagues Annabel Goldie and Nicol Stephen are aghast that she could come up with this without consultation. Some slap in the face for them - never mind the consultation just come out with something totally different which was not to be the subject of examination by the commission. So where are the Terms of Reference for this and why does Wendy think she can abrogate these and conduct a major national policy shift on The Politics Show?

Bizarre. She'll be off with pressure of work shortly or the protection squad will permit a more fundamentally honest examination of her other dealings. Her departure from Scottish politics is next, not FM.
15

So the last few days Wendy comes up
with the most purile and idiotic proposal
and all the Unionistas, despite their prior
opposition, jump fully on board lock
stock and barrel.

Now Brown reverses the whole situation again,
whilst knowingly lying to the House, and now
no doubt all the Unionistas will jump
again like sheep.

These Unionstas have no shame and are so
blind in their hatred of Scotland becoming
a free Nation that they can't even see
what cringing sycophyants they are.

A bit of a tangent but since we're on the topic of Westminster decisions..

FREE PERSONAL CARE
www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Releases/2008/05/07143856

The additional £40 million per year identified by Lord Sutherland as vital for the delivery of free personal and nursing care across Scotland will be met by the Scottish Government , it was confirmed today.

The additional funding was announced by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon in her response to Lord Sutherland's independent review of Free Personal and Nursing Care policy.

Ms Sturgeon advised the Scottish Parliament that all the recommendations made by Lord Sutherland have been accepted, and will form part of a wider package of measures being developed with local government.

Ms Sturgeon said:

"The Sutherland Review concluded that the UK Government was wrong to stop payments of Attendance Allowance for residents in Scotland, while continuing to make it available for those living in the rest of the UK. Clearly it is wrong that the Scottish Budget should bear those costs.......

.....We will seek the reinstatement of this funding, and have asked for this issue to be included on the agenda of the next Joint Ministerial Committee meeting with Ministers from around the UK."

The pressure is mounting on Brown, maybe some BBC, ITV or Herald Journalists can ask Wendy what ehr view on the lost £30M is, Margaret Curran & Hendry Ncleish have already confirmed that it was wrong to withdraw the funds......

What's Wendy's view on the £30M due to Scotland?

Brown has indeed lost touch with reality - and is probably guilty of lying to parliament. Alexander is on record as supporting a referendum within the next 12 months and says three years is too long. She wants the referendum to follow the two-choice model. He must know all this. Perhaps he is banking on her being removed.

For the last couple of weeks, Scottish Patriots have ben asking on these forums "Where's Wendy". Obviously they had her tied up in some wee cupboard with a very large gag in her mouth, and only let her out to attend First Ministers Question Time. So we all know how she couldnt think of a third question to ask Alex the Great. Secondly she got her erky kicked by Maid Nicola. This week she cut her ropes with her Srill Voice and got out, only to appear on The Politics Show where Glenn Campbell, who I thought had drunk himself to death, got her to open her cakehole and put the London Controlled New Slavour Party into even more keek. After that her boss who is a notorious backstabber, stuck the knife in at PMQ in a foreign country.

You know this could be a new book plot for Harry Potter. Wendy could be the Wee Fat Silly Witch who always forgets her spells. OH SORRY THAT WAS BEWITCHED. Elizabeth Montgomery mmmmmm, I was in love with her when I was a bairn, especially when she tweeked that gorgeous nose. Ive got to go and have a wee shower now.

Journos on the radio seem a bit confused as well...'hung out to dry'..'untenable'...she said that her and the PM are 'united against the SNP' but no mention of them being united for a referendum LOL...she will have to go..Salmond will make mincemeat out of her.
They are also saying that she cannot introduce a referendum bill as it would have to go through Westminster meaning Broon would have to Ok it and also a referendum on Europe..no chance!

.... and only yesterday:-

"Scottish Labour leader Wendy Alexander may bring forward a parliamentary bill for a public vote on independence."

What a difference a day makes ..... 24 little hours.

Or as Groucho said "These are my principles. If you don't like them I have others."

Meths, talking of phones.....

......................................

The SNP today lodged a Freedom of Information Request with the Prime
Minister’s office for details of all calls received or made by or on
behalf of the Prime Minister on the evening of Tuesday 6th May.

The request follows Wendy Alexander’s claim on Newsnight Scotland on 6th
May that she had spoken to Gordon Brown that evening and that he was
endorsing her decision to call for a referendum.

In Prime Minister’s Questions on 7th May Gordon Brown denied that Wendy
Alexander had called for a referendum.

SNP MSP Roseanna Cunningham said;

“Wendy Alexander’s credibility is hanging by a thread.

“She told the country and her party that Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister
supported her decision, yet less than 24 hours later he denied her
position.

“There must be clarity, did Wendy Alexander genuinely speak to Gordon
Brown and did he endorse her call for a referendum?”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

HA!

Poor wee Wendy. Watched her refuse to answer questions on Newsnight Scotland last night obviously because she could not. If ever there was an empty heid it must be her. 10 out of 10, for being the worse politician in Scotland no doubt.

Brown refused to back her in Parliament, bye bye Wendy.

Yes Wendy, lets bring it on.

It looks as if Ms. Alexander spoke before the Prime Minister told her what she meant by what she said. (No, it's not meant to be clear.)

Gordon, float-like-a-bee, sting-like-a-butterfly Brown is proving himself to be no parliamentarian either. (Exactly what IS it that he's good at?) Unfortunately, this probably means that the next Prime Minister will be Dave 'Soundbite' Cameron (as the Labour party's arcane rules for regicide make it unlikely that anyone will oust Gordon before the next election.)

Yippee. Swapping a dour, clumsy Scottish Prime Minister with a glib, all-hat-and-no-cattle Home Counties one.

Well according to the wireless and wee Glen Campbell the Broon spokesman is refusing to speak about or clarify the matter...
It's all there online, in the press, the media and on the wireless, no?
Brown goes into hiding again like the coward he is leaving poor wee Wendy dangling like a klingon on the labour party's bum!

This is ridiculous.

Why the hell are there still Scots out there who wish to remain a part of this debacle with these silly unionist parties going through pantomime exhibitions of their incompetence simply to save their own careers.

What the hell is the matter with us?

Let's just have independence now and get on with it.

The union is a balloon.

Just saw her on STV news.

She repeatedly refused to say yes or no when asked if she had Brown's backing for a referendum. She merely waffled on about the SNP not bringing a referendum bill to parliament - she obviously pretends that she does not know that the SNP promised that for 2010.

Broon must be cringing at having her as Labour leader in Scotland. Joke was bad enough. Now they have foot-in-the-mouth that is U-bendy

Presumably everyone who she claims was backing her call for a referendum will now not be calling for a referendum?
It's not just Wendy and Broon the SNP and others should be attacking but the whole Labour party for this laughable behaviour.
One of them at least is a liar (probably both) and should be fully exposed as such, just not good enough for Scotland to have people like this in politics..expose them and get them out!
