Barcelona 6-0 Hibs: Early strikes put Barcelona on easy street against Hibs

A WARM evening at the national rugby stadium provided a comfortable beginning to the new campaign for Barcelona, but a chill and unsettling one for Hibernian. Even allowing for the quality of the opposition, this was a humiliating outing for Mixu Paatelainen's team, who can have got little out of the occasion bar demoralisation.

Dean Shiels was the pick of the Edinburgh side, and the odd spark from Steven Fletcher showed why he has attracted interest in Spain. For the most part, though, Hibs looked dispirited.

It should be added that Barcelona, who had the game wrapped up in quarter of an hour, looked far sharper and well motivated than they had been a year ago when they beat Hearts 3-1 at the same venue. Their new manager, Pep Guardiola, has already gone some way to instil a harder-working approach, and that combined with their evident talent was enough to sweep Hibs aside.

After a gentle start befitting its status as Barcelona's first pre-season outing, the match burst into life in the fifth minute. Dani Alves' cross from the right looked speculative at best, but Chris Hogg, failing to realise how much time he had, hastily cleared it straight to Eidur Gudjohnsen. The former Chelsea player took the ball first time and found the net from 20 yards out.

Undeterred by that early setback, Hibs persisted in pressing forward in search of their first goal in four pre-season matches. They might well have got it after 13 minutes when Alan O'Brien used his speed to break clear up the left wing, but the Irishman delayed his pass into the box unnecessarily, allowing Victor Valdes time to rush out of his goal and collect the ball before Shiels could get to it.

Early in the contest though it was, that lost opportunity was effectively Hibs' last of taking something from the game, as within three minutes they conceded two more goals.

The first, scored by Lionel Messi, was an example of how swiftly a team as talented as Barcelona can switch from an apparently innocuous build-up to a punishing conclusion.

With five or six Hibs players between the Argentine player and their goal, nothing looked on when Messi picked up the pass from Victor Vazquez. But he made room for himself by skipping past a lunging challenge by Rob Jones, got into the ideal position by evading Ian Murray, and then curled a shot from 15 yards into the bottom left-hand corner of Andy McNeil's net.

The goalkeeper almost got a hand to that one, but he came nowhere close two minutes later when a move involving Messi and Thierry Henry among others ended with Gudjohnsen shooting from the left side of his box. Chris Hogg got close enough to make contact, but could do no more than deflect the ball past McNeil and into the net.

Having shown they could score almost at will, Barcelona eased off for the next ten minutes, but then struck again. Messi turned provider this time, slipping through a pass from which Pedro scored with embarrassing ease.

It could have been even worse for Hibs just before the half-hour mark when Messi let fly again, but McNeil pulled off an excellent save to tip the shot over the bar.

Messi had the ball in the net shortly after that when he broke through, rounded McNeil, and tapped in, but mercifully for Hibs he was ruled offside.

Mixu Paatelainen's team had a lot to do even to restore some respectability in their performance. Shiels, impressive both for his hard work and close control, was doing all he could to take the game to Barca, but he was direly in need of some assistance from his team-mates.

The removal of Henry and Messi at half-time might have boosted Hibs' hopes, but their replacement by players of the calibre of Bojan and Yaya Toure could equally have been seen as an ominous sign. Certainly, any suspicion that Guardiola was going to let his side slacken off was dispelled within three minutes of the restart, when two of his six substitutes combined to put their side five up.

There was a degree of luck to the ricochet which took Jeffren beyond the Hibs defence, but there was nothing fortuitous about the manner in which Bojan volleyed his cross home from the edge of the six-yard box.

Hopelessly outclassed though they were, Hibs were able to fight their way back upfield and create their best chance of the match, a fierce shot on the run from Fletcher which Jose Manuel Pinto did well to save.

After a quiet first half, Fletcher was coming on to a game, and he soon had another chance to score. Nish did the approach work, turning two men on the left of the box. His low cross was cleverly curved clear of Pinto, but Fletcher could not get enough control on his contact and the ball skidded wide.

There was no such profligacy at the other end with 20 minutes remaining. Jeffren again did the damage from wide out, and this time it was Toure who scored first time from his shot.

Having already been knocked out of the Intertoto Cup, Hibs had hoped for a happier outing against continental opposition here, or signs of form and fitness beginning to peak at least.

Barcelona: Valdes (Pinto 46), Corcoles, Marquez (Caceres 46), Pique, Alves (Abraham 46), Vazquez (Crosas 30, Keita 66), Pedro (Hleb 66), Messi (Jeffren 46), Sergio (Toure 46), Gudjohnsen (Eto'o 66), Henry (Bojan 46). All subs used.

Hibs: McNeil (Grof 82), Hanlon, Hogg (Canning 74), Jones, Murray (Thicot 46), Van Zanten, Stevenson (Chisholm 46), Shiels (Rankin 74), O'Brien (Cropley 82), Fletcher (Morais 66), Nish. All subs used.

HOW THEY RATED AT MURRAYFIELD

BARCELONA

Victor Valdes

Pretty much a bystander in the opening half and was replaced at half-time due to boredom as much as anything else. 5/10

David Corcoles

Quiet evening for the left- back who was allowed to go forward at every opportunity. 6

Rafael Marquez

Early brutal challenge on Fletcher might have seen him punished with a booking in a competitive fixture. Untroubled afterwards. 6

Gerard Pique

Former Manchester United player strolled through his return to the colours of Barcelona. Looks to be an impressive capture. 6

Dani Alves

Right back given a modicum of trouble by Alan O'Brien's pace and on at least one occasion was shown a clean-pair of heels by the Irishman. 5

Victor Vazquez

Replaced by Crosas after only 30 minutes, with his side already four up. 4

Pedro Rodriguez

Scored his side's fourth goal with a fine finish after great work from Messi. 7

Eidur Gudjohnsen

Got the ball rolling with a fine goal after four minutes and notched another later in the first half. 7

Sergio Busquets

Another who relished the chance to stroll across the park as his side turned on the style in the first half. 6

Lionel Messi

What more is there to say about the little maestro? Scored one and laid on another in a dazzling first-half show. 9

Thierry Henry

Did not impose himself as much as might have been expected but still played a part in much of Barcelona's good work. Looks fit and hungry. 7

HIBERNIAN

Andy McNeil

The goalkeeper did not get much help from his defence, but on a difficult night he acquitted himself well with some fine saves. 6/10

Paul Hanlon

The young full-back defended well and kept his concentration in trying circumstances for any player. One of Hibs' best performers on the night. 6

Chris Hogg

Looked bewildered by the skills of his opponents and found it hard to put a coherent game together. 4

Rob Jones

Another Hibs player who struggled to find and maintain composure. Tormented by Messi and colleagues, especially in first half. 4

David Van Zanten

Stuck to an arduous task pretty well, doing his best to shackle Barca's forays down the flanks. 5

Ian Murray

Did little in the first half and did not emerge for the second. 3

Lewis Stevenson

Play passed the young midfielder by for most of the time he was on the field. 3

Dean Shiels

Did not let his head go down and kept trying to play good football. A defiant performance from Hibs' best player on the night. 7

Alan O'Brien

Had the odd decent touch but again showed his speed is not matched by other aspects of his game. 4

Steven Fletcher

Played well after a quiet start, giving glimpses of the sharpness which has given him such a good reputation. 6

Colin Nish

Did well at times in support of Fletcher up front on a difficult evening for the Hibs forward line. 5

The Hibs board should be ashamed of themselves. They have taken the supporters for a ride and have taken the team to an all time low.

I hope that our supporters will make their feeling clear and demand a dramatic change in policy.

If nothing changes then there will be two Joke SPL teams in Edinburgh this season.

this season isnt going to be good if we just keep moaning weve played bad in lets just say every game weve played soo far but its not only the players to blame what about us ? we dont make the games fun anymore, no wonder the players dont.when was the last time there was a sell out game at easter road? or made it a good game? half the stadium looks dead .we should get behind each player and be more than just 11 players looking like idiots with a bunch of oaps watching

#4 Indeed and it's not like anyone warned you.

Ah well, what goes around comes around, eh? Hearts fans may yet be rewarded for their patience and belief that there has to be something better than settling for the odd 3rd place. Hibs fans on the other hand will get what they deserve for frequently being posted missing at important games they assume they will lose and, now, even unimportant games. Instead of taking the attitude that their support might spur the team on in tough games, they just don't bother going - the SC 0-4 semi-final being a prime example.

#17 Not sure, never bought into that to be honest. Splitting the OF was the best thing to aim for IMO (and people laughed at that idea too). One thing's for sure I DO know that this was the year when Hibs were supposed to show themselves as the true 3rd force, seeing as how they were "best placed" to do that, as the "best run club in Scotland."

This Hibs team reminds me of the one Jim Duffy built - perfect for the 1st division. Don't think you'll get relegated but there's more chance of that happening this season than Hearts going bust. If Hibs do get relegated, I'd pay money to see the last Hibs fan sinking to his knees, clutching his 7-0 blankie, defiant to the last and desperately shouting, "But at least our accounts are in ordeeerrrrrrrrr..." as he falls sobbing to the ground.

Never mind, at least Hearts will still be a joke.

Gotta keep perspective here, some of Barca's play would've ripped anyone open.

But, some of they players just stood back and admired it, was boys stuff some of the ball (or player) watching that was going on. A really poor show for £35 to get in.

The typical Hibs dodgy defending was brutally punished, but the 1st, 3rd and 5th goals were really bad defending, as if they needed any help.

Thought Deano didn't look out of place against any of they players, done really well. O'brien's performance was encouraging for the coming season, he'll no come up against Alves in the SPL, can see him giving somebody a roasting.

Nish, what the hell was that about? Thought he was lookin no bad last season aswell.

Get the trialist boy signed right up, looked very decent when he came on, been crying out for someone strong to win the ball in midfield.

Tynietiger,

Bit hypothetical, but if we still had Scott Brown playing in that midfield, we would never have got turned over by that score. Would've got right in about them, which in turn spurs everyone else on, lack of effort was a bit concerning aswell.

What an embarrassment for Edinburgh and Scottish Football. Granted they took us apart last year aswell, but nowhere remotely in that fashion! It was their first game since last season, they didn’t even get out of first gear and should have comfortably been in double figures.

I bet Barca are now shaking in their boots thinking the amount of goals Fletcher will score against them when he signs for Real.....!!

I honestly cant believe people are having a go at Hanlon. He was faced with Messi in the first half, widely acknowledged as one of the best players in the world currently, he got hee haw help from Capt Jones, who I would happily transfer immediately.

I thought Hanlon was decent considering the opposition he was facing but stand outs for me were Alan O'Brien and Dean Shiels.

Ill agree Mixu is a bad manager, However don't you think the Hibs board have to take responsibility for whats going on as well. It's Petrie and Co that have completely destroyed what could have been a serious challenging Hibs team into at best a mid table team. Hibs are now a Skeleton of what they were 2/3 years ago.

Clear of debt yes, I could never fault Petrie on his business side for clearing your debt, but there comes a time when, you have to do a little speculate to accumulate. After all It's football, and like any sport you compete to win, and do your best, not deliberately fail or weaken yourself.

Before anyone says anything about Hearts, This is a serious post, and there are those on here (Hibs fans) that have agreed with what im saying before now. I know we have had our problems and Vlad consistently shot us in the foot. He went the other way and tried to invest too much and got his fngers burnt in the process, it's all about striking the right balance.

FWIW and this is an honest opinion, I would forget about your new stand, at least for the time being, and concentrate on spending a little of that stands money on the team. 22,000 capacity at Easter Road, thats nearly 10,000 more than your average at the moment and demand for tickets. Put a winning team on the park, with some investment then start reaping the rewards, and then think about building the new stand which would fill if you have a winning team on the park

Hey Ozdon, it beggars belief that hibs fans aren't protesting about the state of their club? Where's your spine, lads?!?!?

Kidding (OBVIOUSLY, before anyone throws a tantrum)

Barca seemed pretty up for it and Hanlon was exposed one-on-one against Messi for 45 minutes. Either Mixu didn't allow for this or O'Brien is too lazy to help out. Apart from that, it was men against girls and I reckon Barca will feel pretty short-changed as it was barely a game.

Hibs were lucky last night that barca stopped going forward after 26 minutes otherwise it could have been at least 15.

Where were all the loyal hibs fans at full time? When the final whistle went the ground was virtually empty. While i understand that most of you have to get home before you tags start to beep it was shocking to see a supposidly loyal crowd walking out in droves after the hour mark.

The prospect of a friendly game against barca has brought shame on hibs for the last years or so since hearts were announced as the preferred opposition in 2007. You were second choice this season and the club has been badly embarrassed by its support so why shouldn't it return the favour?

Don't worry- at least rob jones is your captain...

#53 What's with this mid-week caper? Do the buses avoid Leith after a certain time? Or can Hibs' fans not afford the bus fare/have tags/are under curfew?

Isn't putting the words "loyal fans" and "boycott" in the same sentence an oxymoron?

Poor support offering poor excuses. Time for demos and revolutions down ER way.

Before last nights game Hibbies were telling anyone that would lsiten that the crowd would be much less than the 58,000 Hearts had, because Barca were no longer the team they were. Probably just as well, given the absolute horsing Hibs got last night. I dread to think what the score would have been if they played them last year.
It puts Hearts 6-0 win the other night in a different context.
The real worrying thing for Hibbies must be the dreadful style that Mixu has imposed on the team. Only Shields and the goalie looked useful.

53,
sorry that doesnt wash. This was a charity game so no money made by either team. Any other exscuses for poor attendance? You "loyal hibs fans" are good at making excuses for less loyal fans. what was the reason for half empty hibs end at hampden against hearts. Oh yes, you had some injured players or somthing.
Hibs didnt make a penny from the game and barca were home side and would only play at murrayfield.( i to made same error in thinking otherwise) Truth is you were second choice. Barca wanted to play hearts but we turned them down.

#52 O'Brien had his hands full watching Daniel Alves never mind helping Hanlon watch Messi.

I personally feel that Jones should have helped Hanlon more. Saying that I am not a fan of Rob Jones. He had a good six months when he first arrived and since then (in my opinion) he has been pretty bad and I am not quite sure how he has managed to keep his place in the team.

gorgie finest is back! this unemployed crank has flooded these forums with utter gash for a while now- loyal fans want to see their team play at their own stadium. not next to that tin can you call tynie. to be honest i was at the hearts barca game along with alot of other hibs fans - to see barca. get over it, your fan base it terrible, consisting of old men with their grandsons. obese children chewing hotdogs and space raiders. your VIP section is in a stand made of wood. and loyalty is posting comments on your own teams forum, stop leeching off the superior edinburgh team.

#61 Fair comments - IMO Jones is there only 'cos there's no serious challenge to him in the Hibs' ranks and he suits Mixus playing style when he moves up front.

#62 Loyal fans will want to see their team play anywhere. Presume not watching your own team anywhere other than "at their home stadium" extends to Hampden then, does it?

Why didnt they play this "match" at Easter Road?

What is the Hibs highest recorded defeat at Easter Road?

Losing to Barca at home is no embarrassment, it was after all only a friendly.

Rangers held Barca to 0-0 in last seasons CL & it was the best 0-0 Ive attended.

This game was a disaster for Hibs.

Hobos seriously need to get behind big mixu he is working against the forces of evil in Petrie and is being made a scapegoat for the hobos being cannon fodder.

Boycott the ground, oh you do that already nearly forgot, don't buy the merchandice, hit him in the pocket, come on hobos it's head out of sand time.

Agree, and It's only just the beginning of sweet revenge, many hobos will be wishing soon they had kept their traps shut, some are already starting to wish it.

This has to be the worst show by any Scottish team,Hibs were never in the game and that was playing against a Barca team without their International players. This guy Fletcher who Real Madrid were meant to be interested in HA HA must have been to be incharge of the ball boys. Hearts have nothing to fear playing this team they are pure mince. Mixu didnt even seem interested in the game, could he be the first manager for the chop this season?????

#73 Hearts cannot be any worse than last year. Hibs under Mixu certainly can.
According to the Wookie, Hearts are to sign 4 quality players in next two weeks. Csaba has already made a difference even if its only in restoring some discipline to the team. Lets just hope as things improve, Vlad can keep his mouth shut.

You should know, any quips are not aimed at the likes of yourself and other decent Hibs fans, but at the morons and idiots, who will still be reading or be about whethere thier posting or not.

Anyhoo see we have a Danish striker on trial today, from serie A club Reggina.

Whats going on with Mixu and getting some players in, saying hes being a bit slow about it is an understatement.
